Stupid Enthusiasts On Coaster Specials

My daughter was in the front seat of Raven with a very nice gentleman and they made the cut....twice!! I can not thank Raven Maven enough for the invite. This is something my kids will never forget.....what a blast!!

If you are at home, Doritos slipping from your fingers and falling between the cracks of the couch, and you just happen to be surfing through the channels looking for something cool to watch....do you think people screaming on a roller coaster ride just might grab your attention??? And what if that same person is planning a trip to a park, doesn't know which one to go to, and decides to watch the screaming people to see what is hot in the roller coaster world and what is not. Do you think he will choose to go to the park that has a person sitting on the coaster doing diddly pooh or the park with a person screaming like a madman? It's called marketing son. These shows aren't merely for us enthusiasts to sit and watch and make comments like "that coaster isn't really all that" or "why isn't Shivering Timbers on this?"(that was my comment last night. ;) ). They also show the GP out there what these coasters and parks are made of. They try to give potential park goers some extra fuel to lean one way or another for particular parks.

Think about the big picture when these shows are on, not just yourself. They really aren't just for you and you alone you know. Just my two bits...

Ok I know it's not all your guy's fault. On a personal note I completely muted Sam Marks on X-Wing just because I can't stand that guy (off topic though and that is all because of RRC). My question is WHY does Discovery (along with TLC and Travel) think that it's "cool" to have people talk on coasters and IMHO make fools of themselves "acting" like they are having a good time? I would rather just see the POV WITHOUT people talking, sure they can scream and yell (naturally), but it almost gives us enthusiasts a bad name the way some of you act when on camera.

Side note: Shaggy acted the most normal of all of the ones I saw. I wish some of the other people could appear as intellegent about the ride and not act like a person who has never been in front of a camera before.

This is slightly of topic and might be a dumb question but I dont know and have to ask because I have seen it and heard it so much. What is RRC?
Actually what I thought was more annoying was when they kept on showing the person and not the track. That always annoys me. The most annoying person had to be the latino on X. He shouldnt have even talked.

I know enthusiasts who have ridden a coaster over and over and over for years, and still scream on it just out of pure excitement, and not while in front of a camera.

I think some youngsters these days take things WAY too seriously. Honestly, loosen up. Life is short.

When you are asked to do one of those shoots you do EXACTLY what the producers tell you to do. Yes they say act excited, scream and do describe the coaster while you're riding it. I was even asked to take my hair down because they wanted "coaster hair". I even heard the comment "we know you've ridden this a million times but we would like you to act like it's your 1st time". You will also notice that during the Maggie POV shots NO one has their hands up-that's one of CPs rules, keep hands DOWN, that to me was the hardest thing to do! I did the best that I could do, I did exactly what they asked me to do and actually am pretty pleased with the show! BTW-my name is STILL Raptor Jo NOT Cedar Point Jo (as the special said) and definitely not Magnum Jo, we leave THAT honor to Dan! I didn't see ANY Magnum tattoo however did see a Raptor one, and wonder how many people caught that? :)

Yup, I caught the Raptor tattoo, and also you saying "And that's all I'm going to show you" :)

Yes, at the PR shoot, we were also explicitly told "act like it's your first ride ever". That's fine by me, even with 103 laps under the belt now...

About the only thing I was dissapointed in was the lack of detailed footage of Deja-vu,they just described breifly what the ride was and how it worked but not in as much detail as the other featured rides.Did anyone notice that when they did the POV on Batwing that the entire track was mirrored? that really annoyed me to no end.The highlights however were X and Acrophobia,as for top 10 coasters I think they did a bit better this year than last year and was surprised to see that SFNE's S:ROS didn't even make it this year.
One thing that I noticed was when on the Raven, there was one person in the backround screaming as loud as they could for three-fourths of the ride. I know it wasn't the person doing the ride "narration", but instead some kid who really wanted to screw up the shoot. It made that video quite unenjoyable, but what are you goinig to do?

Hahahahaha. Good times. Nice throw. :)

What has this topic shown us? First of all, the enthusiast community is a small one, and if you get around a little, you'll find that everybody know everybody. It's an even smaller circle along industry folk. Be careful what you say and who you say it to.

Second, many of you have illustrated that you don't know what makes good television as far as the infamous "GP" is concerned. Straight POV is boring television. I've been in and out of TV for a decade, so I think I'm reasonably qualified to make that statement.

Rec.roller.coaster, newsgroup and the *original* online meeting place for "enthusiasts". It's completely unmoderated, as I'm sure many would attest, and although I have some ggod friends that are RRCers, the noise level is deafening at times.....(kinda the opposite of the line for Talon)....;)

Later came URC, which is a site full of really good people, much better DISCUSSION, but also chock-full of "favorites" topics.....The jump IMHO, was almost akin to the Intamin freefalls from 1st gen to 2nd gen.....* a giant leap for coasterkind*.....thanks, Eric!

Then....(cue music from 2001)....*someone* came up with a WAY faster forum, introduced real "moderation" of those kinds of threads, and spurned discussion of parks/coasters to a level not yet seen.....it's the gyro-drop of coaster sites......Cbuzz.......

I hope nobody thought I looked like a fool. At the beginning of the Top 10 show was me, my Dad, neice, and nephew all yelling "Ghostrider!" If you blinked, you missed it.

Don't forget "Operation Graduation" June 1st @ SRM - bring Pat Koch a graduation card! See Coasterbuzz News for details.

I think they are usually pretty good. There are, of course, always those fun little, shall I say "boyscouts." Whenever they go out and talk about Megaphobia, this same guy who has a green vest with lots of pins on it talks through the POV. He uses interesting choice phrases such as, "brilliant airtime!" or "glorious airtime!" all throughout the ride!

That person was the blonde female behind the play-by-play announcer. I was seated in the row directly behind her (tricky camera angles hid me, thank goodness!) and have to agree that her blood curdling screams were a bit much. I am sure she did it to help with the "sell" of the ride, but it made it hard to hear the guy calling the shots. She, by the way, was perfectly lovely and meant no ill. However as soon as the cameras stopped rolling, so did the screams.

Jeremy was right besider her, I am surprised he has hearing left in his right ear ;-)

Gyro-drop of coaster sites? No wonder people are always falling out. ;)

But seriously folks(TM), if you think these forums are fast, wait until you see the upgrade (currently testing in rough form on GTTP).

Hell, I'm an enthusiast and a huge fan of coasters. I enjoy seeing new ones and old ones alike.

I still find straight POV footage simply mind numbing to watch. I can't imagine trying to watch it if I wasn't so into coasters, it'd be impossible to sit through.

www.coasterimage.com

I am probably the only one that thinks this, but I think most POV footage is pretty useless to watch. I've seen some of the on ride footage of coasters I have ridden, and to tell the truth, it does not at all do justice to the ride. Its like driving your car and looking 20 feet ahead at the road at all times.

I remember watching a show on TV about Special Effects and how they filmed the mine car chase for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". It was stated that they simply could have mounted a camera on one of the minature carts they used to film this (in the days before CGI), but that would give too static of a view. It was even stated on the show... "When you ride a roller coater, you do not keep looking straight ahead and at the tracks," so they built a computer controlled camera that could look a head and "anticipate" what is coming next... in otherwords, you saw the curves and drops before you hit them, not when you were in the middle of them.

That is what they need to do for POV footage on a coaster... not simply have it focused ahead at the tracks, but let it "anticipate" what is coming next. Granted, a computer controlled system would be too expensive... but what about strapping a camera on a helmet and putting that on someones head? Might be kind of "jerky" though.
