Son of Beast closes

There's an even shorter one:

This statement is false.

Nothing like a good Ramones reference on a coaster forum!

But actually, the original poster misspelled.."Cretin" was the intent...and Cretin Hop the song. "Cretan" is a native of Crete.

But, tomato, tomahto....

^You bet Mike! This crazy mad uncaring poorly communicating society we live in needs more Ramones :) I know I do.

How about a Ramones song about the Son Of Beast. "Hey Daddy-O, I don't wanna go .... on THAT ride, there's something wrong with it, I don't wanna go... hey romeo... on THAT ride!"

I know it's been discussed, but what ever happened to the loop? It was one of the best loops! It was like a giant Anton loop!

But will it fit in the BASEMENT??? :) I miss the Ramones :( as much as I miss Warren Zevon. They became my favorite band on May 18th, 1982, and I saw them at least 27-28 times. On topic, I'm sure you've heard their terrific cover of Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon's "Palisades Park."

I know it's been discussed, but what ever happened to the loop? It was one of the best loops! It was like a giant Anton loop!

I'm one of those rare souls that had a lotta love for SOB, but the loop did nothing special for me. It was a nice calling card for the ride, but added nothing. I never rode it loopless.

*EDIT*..yeah, I know..I bleeped up the quote function in trying to quote two separate things from CoasterDemon. Sorry!

^Yes, I have a live version and the studio track of the Ramones covering "Palisades Park." Ramone brethren Blondie also covered it in 1977, same pace. Blondie still going, Ramones gone forever :( Save for Marky's cover band..

Speaking of "Palisades Park" I have an old 45 from Kennywood, it's the Cannon song, but with "Kennywood Park." I'm sure there are numerous versions, covers, etc.

SOB - I always said I liked the lift, drop and loop. The lift was so damn big, steep and creepy! I rode it 3 times, the 3rd time was for "I can't believe that ride was THAT bad and ROUGH, I gotta make sure one last time." That last time gave me back pain for 2 days.

I really would like a mini-interview with the masterminds behind the SOB. Did they really think it would work out?

edit - sorry for getting so off-topic. But those bands are related to Coney Island as well ;) Mutant Monster Beach Bash.

I was/am a Blondie fan...seen 'em 5 or 6 times, but not in their heyday. Saw them at GAdv 3 years ago and nearly got heatstroke. I didn't know they covered "Palisades Park." I've also seen at amusement parks over the years: "Foreigner" (quotes because it was billed as Foreigner, but was Mick Jones and a bunch of no names with Jason Bonham on drums), Weird Al Yankovic, the Monkees, Herman's Hermits, Grass Roots, Gary Puckett, and Pat Benatar...not together, of course.

Joey Ramone is buried in Jersey...I've visited his grave a couple of times.

^I dunno if I would mention Foreigner with the likes of Ramones and Blondie, but I digress. Heck, I skated to them all...

So does anyone REALLY know what happen to the SOB loop?

And why does everyone always say 'taer' it down? Instead of 'tear' ?

Some guy so many years ago wanted some ride to be torn down, so we quote his infamous post every once in a while. TAER IT DOWN! lol

SOB's loop went to the scrap yard, if I recall correctly. If the park decided to make SOB a steel coaster, like TG, it would be icing on the cake if they also decided to replace the loop.

I never liked The Ramones, even though it was all the rage with my friends. I always liked Blondie. Foreigner was nerdy, in my circles, until I grew up and noticed how amazing they really were.

CoasterDemon's avatar

^And you can still like Blondie as their new "Panic of Girls" record (?) will be out this year, I think. I think the Ramones may be an acquired taste, but it's such a huge staple in my brain, musically... The 'hits' really aren't even that good. It's the rest of the stuff that kept me a fan ;)

So "taer it down" is simply poking fun at someone? I can get that. I think that loop is in storage somewhere :)

Google is flakey about searching old Usenet posts, but it originated with a post on rec.roller-coaster I think in 1998, and people brought it from there to pretty much every coaster forum since. It's a pretty old joke, which I realize only because most people don't even remember it.

Jeff - Editor - CoasterBuzz.com - My Blog

Jeff is Correct. Taer It down came from Usenet rrc. Along with other classics such as Bootlegged/Cheeseburger

Jeff: No kidding Google gives wonky results. And why is it that so many search engines (not just Google) will give you hundreds or thousands of hits, but when you order by date, suddenly all the hits go away. Actually the results are better than I expected, given that Chris Lucht used "Taer It Down!" as his signature for YEARS.

Judging from the responses (and the absence of "TAER" in any of them) I think, in spite of Google's wonky searching of USENET messages, that the origin is here:

message-id: 35CA2807.E4D33A48@bcpl.net

It's a short message, so I'll quote it here in its entirety:

I was thinking it would be great to have a Superman ride at PKD but I
couldn't figure out where they would put it. Now I think that if PKD
would tear down one side of the Rebel Yell to put a Superman there, I
could live with that. Anyone else think this is a good idea?
I mean 0-100 mph and the straight up would beat even the Volcano in my
opinion...

Of course, the original poster was shouted down in the thread. John Cline probably had the most accurate response when he replied, "Er, Mommy, I smell a troll.". Indeed, I don't believe "Kirk" was a recognized contributor to the r.r-c community at the time.

It is not obvious why the "tear" spelling stuck, particularly since, as you can see, Kirk corrected himself in the body of the message. But at the end of the thread, two messages probably caused a certain amount of monitor lossage due to sprayed Coke. For brevity, I'll quote only the second message, which quotes the first:

(the real O.J. Simpson got his acquittal in October of 1995)

In the thread, Google shows that one user tried to change the thread title and correct the spelling, but it rapidly got changed back. The reversion was probably not an intentional act; the user who changed the title (Usenet readers are SUPPOSED to use the References: header to track threads, so the threads are independent of their titles) did not get any responses, so his "fork" of the thread simply died, and everybody else just lazily left the title alone. So "Taer down the Rebel Yell" stayed on our newsreaders for at least a week.

Oddly enough it looks like I basically ignored that thread. By 1998 I was posting from the Greater Columbus Freenet as either dalloff@freenet.columbus.oh.us or dalloff@gcfn.org .

And thus was an Internet meme born.

(edit)
Oh, and Chuck...the Bootlegged Cheeseburger thing actually DOESN'T come from Usenet, at least not directly. It was from one of the very earliest widely distributed VHS tapes from the era: Robb & Sara's Home Movies 1999 (yes, THAT Robb). There is a scene in which the Featured Posse is waiting for the rain to stop at AstroWorld so that they can ride Serial Thriller. Some random kid says the ride is "bootlegged", mutters something unintelligible, and finally says, "Cheeseburger."

There is a lower-third title somewhere in that videotape featuring the words, "Taer It Down."

Your right, A video I have in some box never emptied since moving a few years ago. But Usenet made the saying famous, At least for awhile :)

I rode SOB once, when it was about a month old. I don't remember it being as bad as everyone says that it was. Granted it was basically brand new when i rode it. I have no opinion how it was as it aged or even how it was after the loop was removed.
