Six Flags Great Adventure announces the world's tallest, fastest coaster

Six Flags Great Adventure announces the world's tallest, fastest coaster today. Kingda Ka will be an Intamin rocket launching 128 mph in 3.5 seconds reaching 456 feet tall. It will be configured similarly to Cedar Point's Dragster, only with a drawn-out 129-foot bunny hill.

Read more from AP via MSNBC.

I want for parks to build normal rides for a change. This looks crazy, but I don't know if I like what it means for the park. I don't know if I like that it'll be easily seen from miles outside the park.

Also -- isn't Top Thrill Dragster's ride time about 20 seconds? What makes this one 150% longer, according to AP?

The same thing that makes Xcelerator 62 seconds. ;)
This ride is certainly going to be massive...where the hell are all the breaks gonna go? That bunny hill is freakin huge! What a ball-sy move by SF...looks like this one is going to be a huge winner.
What are you talking bout, Danny, the Inverting top hat element?;)
...and somewhere on the West Coast, a sister park named Magic Mountain is wishing they had never built Superman The Escape.

Is capacity the thing enthusiasts are going to be complaining about? Looks like only three trains in a blocking system similar to MF. On train on the course, one in unload, one in load.
I love both rockets(TTD and Storm Runner) that I have ridden, and am really looking forward to this one.

Well, if the Stormrunner OTSR's really are as unobtrusive as everyone says, then it won't be a big deal.*** This post was edited by BullGuy 9/29/2004 6:30:34 AM ***
Craig : I'm sure they will be using brakes on the way down the hill since there may not be room for much else.

Looks like Storm Runner trains to me.

Here's another over-head shot :

notice how the hill ends as soon as it gets to the station. This leads me to believe that the train will be stopped while going down the air-time hill.

OTSR's, Dual Loading Station, Custom Molded Trains, I can't wait!

Well, according to the Fact Sheet,

Dragster is 2,800 feet long... Kingda Ka is 3,118 feet long. Not too great of a difference, only made up by the difference in height, length to launch & the length of the bunny hill if stretched out.

...so I'm guessing very very shortly after the bunny hill (perhaps halfway down) is when the breaks are applied, and then just like Dragster, there will be the unload platform before or after the final turn-around.

...since it IS different than Dragster in more than just height & speed, this might have renewed my interest in wanting to check this out for '05.
...I'll still wait for reviews & reliability at this point, however.

GREAT JOB Keefington!

Ack, OTSRs :(

The OTSR's on Storm Runner are probably the best designed ones I've encountered. That being said, they're STILL over the shoulder restraints, and there's nothing like being in an open car with a lap bar to hold you in. There's a few big reasons why so many of us here love hyper coasters and not having otsr's is surely some part of it...

*Cue the "I actually don't mind the restraints at all!" posts.

Sorry, just call me not the most optimistic guy given this park's previous track record...

...shock still settling in....

And I will be riding this opening day.

The bunny hill looks too tight for that speed. I would not be surprised if there were breaks up and down it and you still got air on it.
...wouldn't it be a nice touch if there were some MF-like Intamin Hyper elements attached to that tower? I know there were plans of Dragster with some overbends and hills before the breaks.
I guess people are into record claiming.
Wow..I still can't believe NJ is letting them build this here! I'll be there opening day. My only problem is going to be telling my daughter she isn't tall enough.
The "bunny hill" looks useless - the radius looks way too large to give any sort of airtime pop. I'm not usually one to complain about airtime, but that just seems kind of useless to me.

The animation is gorgeous - if it was Keith or whoever, wonderful job with that.

I love the idea that it's the centerpiece for a new "area" of the park - I think that's a really cool idea, and I hope that the vegitation around it is a lot like what's in the animation!

Another Six Flags coaster with a double-station? Didn't they learn their lesson from X-Flight? Now not only are they going to have to deal with the launch mechanism, but the dual stations too. Then again, Hershey makes theirs work with no problems, so I could be wrong.

Lastly, I freakin' LOVE the name. Very original, very mysterious sounding. I just hope it actually means something cool, other than like Kingdom of Ka or something ;)
