Shockwave Info. Updated

Kaldaim,

There is a road which runs from the current emplyee lot, around to the main parking lot. So, yes, you can enter from Milwaukee Ave and drive through to the main parking lot.

Have a look at this awesome aerial photo of Shockwave, you can see the road heading off to the left of the picture .. That goes to the emplyee lots.

You can see the same road in this picture, running from the lower right to the lower left:

(I didn't take those beautiful aerial shots, and I'm sorry that I have forgotten the name of the person who did).

"Now see here. Did it ever cross your mind that six flags was adding a water park and a coaster? All they would have to do is deconstruct shockwave and you have a basically flat lot to build on and the flyer would go in where cajun cliff hanger east river crawler and power dive are?

Hmmm...a waterpark in Shockwave's location... This isn't the first time I've heard something like this, and I -didn't- hear it on a rumor site (not saying it about the '03 season, but let's just say that not taking down Whizzer isn't the first time SFGAm has changed their minds). Sounds like a great way to revitalize a "dead" area.

Still think we're getting the flyer. Just wondering where. I also expect some other surprises, based on some stuff I've heard. Time will tell.

The planned location for the waterpark is opposite the tollway. At least as of when the park purchased that property. I have my doubts the waterpark will go where Shockwave is now unless they decide not to build on the other property that they own. I think they have to at least break ground by the end of next year or 2004. I forget which it is.

Maybe they are going to take out shockwave to make for some more parking stalls. Heck the lines are still painted in!!

I don't know, but I'm also sticking to the larger coaster theory... I just have a gut feeling. :)

I believe that SFGA has until Dec. 2003 to break ground on their land purchase. I have also heard that the water park would be there, but I've also heard that the hotel would be there. possibly both, I'm not really sure how large the land is.

SFGA Bob. The proposed plan to the Gurnee village is a waterpark, convention center, and employee housing. I dont remember reading about a hotel but I might have missed that.

What I am surprised at is when Marriott owned the park, they never built one of their own hotels near the park. Very odd considering that is what Marriott specializes in!!!!

Ric Flair was hitting on the female host, he told her - "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it has the longest line." WOOOOO!

And for some reason Chitown's tagline cracks me up each time...

-----------------
Top 5 Steel: #1 Millenium Force #2 Phantom's Revenge #3 Ice Dragon #4 Incredible Hulk #5 Wild Thing
Top 5 Wood #1 Viper #2 Thunderbolt #3 Timberwolf #4 Outlaw #5 Screaming Eagle

The last time flair said that was two weeks ago or so on raw? I think.

Chitown, I remeber gurnee also saying stuff about a hotel that will conect with the water park. *if it is one.

If a project of that size is undertaken, then the completion date won't be for a while.

Looking at the photos Cameron posted leads me to believe that almost anything is possible for next year... Flyer - Floorless - 4-D - etc.

A floorless is unlikely if they keep Shockwave, but a flyer could fit in the Orleans Place section (In the Lobster/Cajun Cliffhanger/Power Dive area) if it's designed to fly over or near the Rapids ride. The theatre could even remain intact provided that this coaster uses some of the space behind it.

Everything back there seems easy enough to work around. They could easily re-direct the road so that employees could drive around the new coaster.

I have a feeling that Six Flags came up with several options for their 2003 attraction. The whole Whizzer removal announcement seemed like a test, as well as a marketing strategy. I imagine they had 2 or 3 coaster options in mind prior to the announcement. (1 for the Whizzer footprint, 1 for the Power Dive/Cajun Cliffhanger area, and possibly another for the Shockwave footprint).

Once they received enough feedback about the Whizzer to decide to keep it in operation, the probably went with one of their other options. I imagine the track for the new ride is being manufactured now and construction will start during or immediately following Fright Fest.

Granted, this is all just speculation. I personally hope we see something new in the Orleans section of the park, and that both Whizzer and Shockwave stay. Maybe Shockwave is getting new trains next year as part of grand improvement of that section of the park...

I can dream, can't I?

Here's my hope: Shockwave gets tossed to SFAW (or some other deserving park), and *nothing* replaces it next season. This time is used to actually make something of the space: landscaping, theming, etc.

Yah, well screw you. We don't need ANOTHER old and battered ride sent to Houston, we've got more than enough of that crap already. If any park deserves something new it's Astroworld that's been passed over for three years.

We don't really have room for that heap of steel anyway. And it'd be dumb to rip stuff out and knock buildings down just to erect an old clunker like Shockwave.

I agree Astroworld deserves a good NEW ride. It's a lovely park, which I remember fondly from my youth (lived just outside of Houston for a while during the late 70s and early 80s).

Shockwave, if properly maintained, is actually an excellent coaster. If you guys can't get Texas Tornado up and running, I really think you would really enjoy Shockwave, especially if it's reconditioned to a "like new" state. When it opened at SFGam in 1998, it was absolutely incredible - easily one of my favorites. As of late, I think it has suffered from neglect.

If Six Flags was to relocate this coaster, I imagine that they would invest some money to make sure that it ran better than it did in it's previous location. Personally, I'd rather see them make the effort to recondition the ride and keep it here in Illinois for all of us to enjoy, but if you Texas folks are lucky enough to get it, I hope you welcome the ride with open arms. It's not nearly as bad as you think.

It's bad. Really bad. I agree it was a great ride in the glory years, but those years are way gone.

It's not that simple to just make it "like new".

You will get Shockwave, and you will love it.

Shockwave opened in 1988, not 1998. :)

chris - Astroworld could always get that CCI woodie that was cancelled a few years back. Oh, wait...CCI is out of business. Nevermind...looks like they will get Shockwave afterall.

Actually, right up until Denise wigged out and and disbanded the company, they were in talks again to build a CCI in Houston once more (a different one than the original plan from several years ago). So that got shelved yet again, and I have no idea if the park is talking to Gravity Group about those plans or not.

Shockwave has a much larger footprint than Texas Tornado. Basically in order to wedge that ride into the Houston park they'd have to gank out another old transplanted coaster like Batman: The Escape which is on the periphery (Tornado is in the middle of the park sandwhiched between other rides). There's no current plots of land in the park big enough for something like that. That begs the question, who in their right mind would swap one old late 80s coaster for another?

The park is already full of old 70s and 80s coasters with the lone exception of Serial Thriller. The park doesn't want another peeling maintenance albatross. Astroworld is not DESERVING of more hand me downs; that's like saying an abused wife is DESERVING of more abuse because she's had a lot of it before. You're an idiot!
