Shivering Timbers takes top spot in popular wood coaster poll

Posted | Contributed by Darth Saambe

Mitch Hawker has posted the results of his wooden coaster poll. The poll uses an algorithm that intends to separate ride quality from rider quantity, so the sheer number of riders for a particular coaster doesn't weight the results. Shivering Timbers at Michigan's Adventure has again claimed the top spot, displacing Tonnerre de Zeus, which slid all the way to 10.

So I've got bad taste? I think that anyone that has been on The Roller Coaster at Lagoon and has also been on Son Of Beast at King's Island will agree with me that Son Of Beast is a much better ride. Son Of Beast is ranked number 133 and The Roller Coaster is ranked number 85.

skinny,

You must not have participated as the vote between those two was 11 to 0 in favor of the Utah ride.

I didn't participate in the vote, and I'm glad I didn't. Those 11 people must have never ridden Son Of Beast.

Now that's some great logic, skinny12.

"This poll sucks because I don't agree with the results, but I'm glad that I didn't participate and have a chance to influence the results."

Yay! Hooray!

I got the test all wrong....darn it Mitch, it's YOUR fault...

My mileage varied, who do I blame?

boblo, my dead cat Skittles' name begins with S, could it be HIM...talking to YOU from beyond the grave....or are you *just* channeling John Edwards....;)

I've ridden both Coaster and SOB I'd much rather ride the Utah woodie, so obviously not "anyone" will feel the same way you do.

Hey Mamoosh,

I'm curious to know what makes the one at Lagoon better than Son Of Beast in your opinion?

Mamoosh's avatar

More airtime, better trains, classic design, smoother ride.

But other than that, did you find them to be similar?

Weird.

I sort of thought Shivering Timbers was running worse this year than I'd recalled. Oh well, I didn't vote in this year's (though I got a ballot in the mail) so I don't really have a say anyway.

BOTH were wooden coasters, chris....catch UP, would you...(wood you?)....;)

???ballot in the mail??? Different poll? Is Mitch making a special effort to get the opinions of 'celebrities'.

Skittles tells me he forgives 'gator for the times of neglect. Says HE is running around with someone named Kenny now.

Yes Mitch High Roller used to be a good airtime machine in the 1970s and early 80s. That is why I'm so pissed at Valleyfair because why were the able to let it loose fo so long before deciding to ruin it. I worked in the park services department in 1982 and took like 398 rides that year. I really liked the ride back than and if they would only keep it that way I'd be VERY happy. The problem with VF is simply this: You never know when you will get a decent ride on their coasters especially WT & HR. Once in a great while you may get lucky with a lightly braked ride retaining most of the thrills and more often than not the two rides are braked so badly that they completely kill the ride after the brakes! :-( HW , Americana & IB you can count on a halfway decent ride if not a GREAT ride every time you visit those parks and the only way those rides would have a bad day would be weather related or a lack of lubrications but those parks (unlike VF) tries their best to keep their rides running at their best!!

You guys have NO IDEA. After losing by one vote last year, I was determined to get in the ranks again this year...but I definitely did not expect to be the best. Words cannot express :)

"And enjoy your ride on Shivering Timbers, the world's number one wooden coaster!"

Personally, I'm a bit disappointed that Cornball Express didn't rank higher. Granted it was in the top 20, but I feel that Raven, Cornball, and Boulderdash are all better rides than Timbers.

'Moosh, I guess you and I agree on yet another thing. ;)

I didn't knwo a wooden coaster could type, or even a steel one for that matter. Geez Kara, sometimes you take things toooo seriously!

I am forced to wonder WHAT Cornball *the other voters* are riding....the one I rode was nothing short of amazing. Anyone else out there care to comment, 'cause it tied for my top spot?

I can imagine that if I got a ride on a nice warm ST, freshly greased, it could climb CONSIDERABLY....esp. if there's no trims added...when is TFest again...;)

bill, really needs to telecommute...

Rollergator,

I had the opportunity to ride Cornball the Saturday after SRM 2002. I (along with the rest of Team Short Bus 2, including bASS) loved it along with the atmosphere so much that we left MiAdv early the next day so we could go back to IB and get in more rides on it. I liked ST, but I found it a bit repetitive - hill, hill, hill, hill, helix, hill, trick-track, etc, etc, etc. It's a good ride - but I prefer to have more elements as opposed to an overabundance of one particular one.

I can't rank a #1 coaster - I've got a number of "top tier" wood coasters though. Those coasters are Raven, Cornball, and BoulderDash.

Cornball at night is an absolute freak. The front row is nothing but knee-banging air and the back row is the closest I've felt anything get to...well, 'Clops in the morning. Twisting drops with violent air that BD lacks, unique visuals that ST doesn't have--it just has a bit of everything and packs it in such a tiny, unique package.

I'd still trade Kara VF's WT for ST anyday (you wanna hyper? Take it! Take it!) even with loose brakes, but IMHO Timbers gets sucker-punched by a couple of smaller woodies.

I know--why don't I vote next year? D'oh!
