Shivering Timbers takes top spot in popular wood coaster poll

Posted | Contributed by Darth Saambe

Mitch Hawker has posted the results of his wooden coaster poll. The poll uses an algorithm that intends to separate ride quality from rider quantity, so the sheer number of riders for a particular coaster doesn't weight the results. Shivering Timbers at Michigan's Adventure has again claimed the top spot, displacing Tonnerre de Zeus, which slid all the way to 10.

Interesting results. Let's remember, people, that this is an OPINION poll. If your personal #1 didn't place well don't take it personally.

At #37 Big Chief's Cyclops is vastly underrated IMHO. There's no way SFWOA's Villian even comes close.

Hey, I guess this makes me the first to whine about the results in this forum. If you must know, yes there's plenty of cheese on today's lunch already (ironically a four cheese and herb focaccia).

What a pleasant surprise! Raven and Legend are still in the top 10 as well.

Raven and Legend have historically done well in this poll, and with good reason.

The most interesting to me were Tonnere De Zeus, Megaphobia, and Grand National. In the wake of the ACE European trip, the former dropped, while the latter climbed. Given there were over 200 people on the tour, many of whom are online, I'd be willing to bet there's a direct correlation between the trip and the reordering.

Villain held such promise its first year. What a shame that they can't maintain it.

Awesome, ST reclaims first place. Also I was glad to see Viper move up in the polls which I think is a great coaster.

Playa says: 'At #37 Big Chief's Cyclops is vastly underrated IMHO.'

While 'The Drop' (note the capitalization) on Cyclops is absolutely the most extreme airtime moment I've experienced, the ride just feels incomplete to me.

If there were more to it, I'd rank it higher. There are just too many other quality rides that offer a more complete experience.

I was really sad to see The Beast down at 40. IMO it deserves a lot better. I can't argue though, it jumped up higher this year :) Congratulations to Shivering Timbers!

Awww, come on. That's only because you want more and more. It's so addictive.

It's like visiting a premier restaurant vs. Old Country Buffet. Do you want a whole lotta 'okay' or a tiny plate of the best stuff there is?

I was very happy to see Wild One at #44 and Roar East at #47. I definitely felt Hercules got the "justice" it deserves. Sorry Hostyl. *** This post was edited by Intamin Fan on 12/2/2002. ***

Neither. I want a whole lotta the best stuff there is. Why settle for a tiny plate when I could have a five course meal?

'Playa, with that kind of thinking one-trick-ponys should be high on your lists.

I guess all was not so well on Olympus this year.

What I found most interesting was the GE Comet's and Phoenix's moves into 5th and 6th places, which are the highest positions they have held in a long time. I'm not sayign I disagree- I feel the Phoenix ran as good as it has ever run this past year- I'm just surprised.

Don't forget to vote for your favorite steel coasters @ http://www.geocities.com/wcoasterpoll - the polls are open until December 15th!

Gwazi higher than Beast? That's really odd.

Despite Mitch's warnings, I actually place MORE value on the list of 2002 riders-they seem to have a more accurate read on how the coasters run TODAY, as opposed to a few years back.

Well....only thing that matters to me is that Timbers came on top!!!!

And you rode Cyclops when??

Note that Chris didn't say 'one-trick pony', he said 'not enough.' He respects The Drop of all Drops and so should you. And yes, Cyclops is my #1 woodie--though I have yet to compare it to the HW tandem.

BTW, the hills preceding the Mother of All Drops are still as good at 10 am as the best of most other coasters at the end of the day. The Drop is just an exclamation point.

I'm suprised Son of Beast ranked so low. It's a decent ride in 1/3 of the seats, and that's probably the problem.
