I wear a mask when I poop on my neighbors lawn.

For what it's worth. Only one concert I've been to this year required masks. It was GnR and it was due to a citywide mask mandate at the time. They were enforcing it for entry, but once inside no one had them on. Thank God for all the middle-aged dregs of society.

Since being vaccinated in April, I've worn a mask in exactly two situations - air travel, medical facilities.

If that makes me a dangerous anti-science mask denier, then cool, I'm a dangerous anti-mask science denier.

I've stayed out of the conversation for a while because I'm still convinced I live in a different world than most of you, but I'm well past the point of calling it done (1000 corpses a day would disagree with me, amirite?).

Gonch- How was the GnR show I saw them a few years back and the show was fantastic. The only downside was it pissed me off to think of the music they could’ve made the last 20 years if they had stayed together.

If Florida's strategy on Covid-19 has been so wrong, why are people moving there while also many are leaving California & New York? The strategy in Florida has statistically landed them in the middle. They aren't the worst and not the best.

DeSantis is benefitting from the fact that the three most populous counties in the state...Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach...have bucked the Governor's approach to this from the beginning. If those three counties had handled Covid the way the rest of the state did I suspect our deaths in the state would have been up 30% or more. Our schools resisted removing the mask requirements as long as possible. Our counties have been more restrictive about Covid protocols. I can name numerous examples.

Why are people leaving NY and California for Florida? That was happening before Covid and can be attributed to many things...not the least of which is the absence of a state income tax.

DeSantis is really good about playing to his base while still benefitting from other's policies. He talks smack about the Federal funds that are coming to the state while at the same time using them to shore up his budget. He sends mixed messages about Covid practices while benefitting from South Florida's tighter controls. He definitely knows how to play the game.

I always tell people that Florida is actually three states... northern/panhandle, central and south. They're very different. To Wahoo's point, the most densely populated areas have mostly done the right things. Also, the "oldest" areas like The Villages were pretty good about getting vaccinated quickly. But if you drill down to the county level, it's the same as anywhere else. The more red it is, the worse the outcome.

And why are people moving here? It would be a special kind of stupid to believe it's Covid policy. People move here because of the weather, not state/local income tax and inexpensive housing. Although that last condition is starting to disappear from the large metros, unfortunately, especially for renters.

Pennsylvania works this way too, but as two regions: Pittsburgh/Philadelphia, and "the T". California also breaks down three ways: Northern Coastal, Southern Coastal, and the interior valley.

As a mostly unrelated aside: I really enjoyed Colin Woodward's American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America. It explores the ways in which political/cultural boundaries do not follow state lines. It's still a little high-level for some of these particular intra-state distinctions, but it doesn't even include Miami as culturally part of North America, and doesn't discuss it at all.
