PKI starts 2004 hype machine with announcement of WaterWorks removal

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Paramount's Kings Island today announced the removal of WaterWorks, the park's 15-acre water park. Its last day of operation will be September 1. The press release quotes general manager Craig Ross saying, "Our guests are in for a real surprise next season."

'real surprise' a state of the art parking lot. Moving chairs, individual beacon locators.
Johnny, it would just be ironic then if that's what the name ended up being.

Shawn- "With the parks this year down in attendance and revenues are flat to lower, it would make sense to charge a separate admission."

Who said anything about attendence being down?

And whoever was talking about a Jump2, that would be awesome. What if KI has a deal with Huss on their Giant rides? (TR, Delirium) The idea of a park with multiple Giant rides has been thrown around by Huss: http://www.hussrides.com/35GiantLand.htm

I'm not saying that there is a deal, just that it would be cool if there was. And the Jump2 concept would go well in a waterpark.

Well, I am excited now due to the fact that I'm going next year, but I think what may be the BIG suprise is that they could put an Intamin Aqua Trax in. It seems to be one of the most promising prototypes in a while, so maybe...

I would expect something besides just a waterpark expansion though, most likely a Jump2, like the one is PCW. No matter what 2004 will be a promising season for the park

Wow, that's the first logical post I've read in this entire thread.

That was exactly what my first thought was. Now, for a real kicker they should send Stealth to PKI

That makez sense cuz we recently got 3 Vekomas. But it'll never be true:( I just hope theres SOME hope of a Rollersoaker/Master Blaster/Aqua Trax in the new water park.

As a representative of pga, i would inform you people that pga's latest rumor is that pga is recieving a waterpark for next year and will be sending Stealth to another park. Wether it is going to pki or not is still a mystery but that is the latest rumor and please dont get confused, for now it is only a rumor.

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

Quail -- from what I have heard in the industry and followed in news reports, the majority of parks are down this season in attendances (of the chains) Smaller parks are holding. Here are some stats as of end of July...

Kennywood FlatWaldameer Park Down 10%Cedar Fair Down 5% (average for chain)Disney Parks Down 8%Silver Dollar City Down 125,000Dollywood Flat to slightly higherConneaut Lake Down 25%Carowinds Down (number not reported, but has had poor weather)Six Flags Down 4% (average for chain)Canada’s Wonderland Flat

As for WaterWorks being spread out, it is due to the power lines...they couldn't expand under them and to go north towards the picnic grove would not work at the time of the expansion.*** This post was edited by Shawn 8/18/2003 10:34:43 AM ***

Many parks have been down this year because the weather has just been such crap. Waterparks are getting hit very hard because of that reason. While attending waterworks about 3 weeks ago, I was walking around and thought of how much more the park would benefit from a redesign and higher capacity slides and rides. They just have too many one-person slides, and many of those are body slides that some kids are afraid of. The new waterpark (or whatever its going to be) is really going to be what the park needs. What do you want to bet they will have a Zinga Type slide?

My guess would be it'll be a new twist on a water park, seeing as to how the quote from the folks at PKI is that people who liked WaterWorks are going to love whats coming next....
Okay here are my hopes for the revamp

*Schlitterbahn style it(the lazy river quenes, blasters, ect)

*Just blasters

*Zinga style slide

*One of those half-pipe slides...

*A roller soaker

*aqua Trax

*A normal Water coaster

If just ONE of those options is included in the revamp, I'll be satisfied for the year, especially if it's one of the coaster options.

Here's the scoop:

In regards to all the "Splash Works" towels floating around the park: Splash Works is part of PCW (Canada).
Splash Works is a 20 acre water park. I've taken the following description directly off of the official web site. Maybe this will give you all an idea of what will be taking place @ PKI.

"Bring your bathing suit and ride the waves at Canada's largest outdoor wave pool. Gently float a quarter mile on The Lazy River. Or choose from over 16 thrilling water slides- from monstrous 8-story speed slides to tube rides or relax in our quarter mile Lazy River. There are also scaled-down slides and a splash pool just for kids. Plus, enjoy Canada's largest outdoor continuous wave pool! At 36,000 sq. ft., Whitewater Bay is six feet deep and holds over 1,000 people."

It sounds exciting enough? I was also reading on an unofficial site that Splash Works has a coaster that intertwines with a slide of some sort. This could be a very interesting season.

The coaster would be the Mighty Canadian Minebuster, a mighty fine wooden coaster that was built long before the waterpark. So I wouldn't really count on a coaster as part of the PKI experience...

PKI has now devoted a page to the Waterworks closing. Something new to the statement as well.....

"The news is out that we are getting ready to announce one of our exciting 2004 additions to PKI. "

wow...check this out... in that article for those who didnt read all the way down:

"In order to make room for the new water park, Paramount's Great America is removing the Stealth roller coaster. Thrill seekers who haven't ridden Stealth have until Sept. 2 to come to the park and ride it before the ride closes and construction begins on "Boomerang Bay."

Today, carrowinds announced a "new" vekoma flying dutchman.... could it be possible that all the rumors of stealth to carowinds are true? I didnt beleive it, but that is in the offical press release!

looking forward to what pki has in store for us in 2004..... and 2005.....

So Does this mean Waters Works Becomes Boomerang Bay in 2004???
that is kind of what i was trying to sayh in that post....
big year for paramount.... new waterpark, revamping a waterpark, and moving a coaster.... to tell you the truth, Boomerang Bay sounds like a pretty cool name for a waterpark... says it will have some kind of austrailian theme...
Could be Cool...
