Lost Dark Rides

The best haunted walkthrough ever was Brigantine Castle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOqEaDVJvZI

Got down to Wildwood this past weekend, only Mariner's Landing was open, but the Ghost Ship ride was way better this year. Last year my kids thought it was lame, but this year they got the crap scared out of them a couple of times.

It won't be long before I'll be nostalgic for Erieview's darkride [/image="images/frown.gif"]

I already am. I was going to say this one.

Erieview's, Myrtle's, and Miracle Strip's....2-story "traditional dark rides" I totally loved. Oh, and Trimper's.

Vater's avatar

Which Trimper's dark ride is gone? Not the ride-through haunted house, I hope...

^Oops, sorry. I was just thinking of my all-time favs (having drifted off of "lost" rides). ;)

The coffin-car one facing the Pier is the one I'm referring to. Not sure what became of the one in Myrtle. The one from Erieview is still housed at Conneaut, right?

Le Cachot was very good, but under 90 seconds long, any wait in line beyond 10 minutes made you wonder. The Gold Rusher was also great.

I miss the Fun House at Cedar Point with the spiral slide exits, and the short lived Turvy Manor Fun House at Busch Gardens Virginia.

I don't want to give up Volcano for it, but I would not mind another ride on the Land of the Dos. That song gets stuck in my head sometimes. Later it was rethemed to the smurfs and no one misses that.

How about recreating Kennywood's Old Mill into something other than Garfield?

I agree about Old Mill. Garfield cutouts painted in Chromodepth paint with black lights was a downgrade from the skeletons that were there before it. It turned a pretty good ride into a horrible ride. I have used riding Garfield's Nightmare as a punishment for a ten-year-old not listening while at the park.

Oh, ok...I haven't been there in a few years, but I hadn't heard of its removal either. Glad to know it's still there, I always enjoyed that ride. And it's been a fixture there for eons.

Edit: This one, correct?

I didn't realize anyone missed Land of Dooz, either. I thought it was lame when I was 6, and wasn't terribly fond of the Smurfs, either (the cartoon or the ride). If anything were to be resurrected in the mountain, I'd want it to be the Haunted River. But definitely not in trade for Volcano--I'd been saying for years prior that the mountain should be gutted for an indoor coaster. I was at least partially prophetic. :)

Dark Knight Coaster at SFGAdv, because...Oh, wait.. Sorry. I misunderstood the thread title. I thought it was about dark rides that should BE lost.

My bad.

Could someone describe the earthquake ride at CP? And when was it removed?

Earthquake the ride was removed when CP created Bernstein Bears Land...It was an indoor/outdoor attraction if I remember correctly. Then after the bear's left it became what is now the Snoopy Shop.

As for what it was like...I was VERY young but I still have vague memories/ nightmares of it. It was one of my first rides EVER. And I remember double doors banging a lot. Sudden sharp turns as buildings looked they were going to fall on to you. LOTS of neon glowing and looking skyscraper buildings everywhere, all shaking. I just remember a lot of gags of the building is falling at you, and then you make a sharp turn....I think the outside of the building also said Earthquake, and it might have moved too? My memories are from about when I was 6 (many moons ago.)

I remember the pirate ride more than Earthquake.

Cedar Point's Earthquake and Pirate Rides were both purchased from Freedomland, a theme park that was open for just a few years in the early sixties in the Bronx, New York.

Earthquake was originally in the San Francisco area of Freedomland: the ride took you through the San Francisco Earthquake. It was indeed an old-school dark ride with lots of florescent paint, sharp turns, things "falling" on you and many sets of doors to bang through.

I used to think Pagoda Gift Shop got its name from the Earthquake Ride (one room of the dark ride was set in San Francisco's Chinatown) but have recently learned a Pagoda-themed building has been at that location since around 1910.

Berenstain Bears. The spelling matters. Someone lost on Jeopardy because of that. :) And they're on Sprout at about 6 every night, and it seems they made shows as recently as 2003.

Next year is 50 years of Berenstain Bears books.

I know them mostly from my little sister. She had tons of the books growing up and watched the original 80's TV show.

My kids never got into them. Probably wouldn't know what they are if I asked.

I was surprised to see them airing on Sprout, and they even referred to the Internet once on an episode, which really surprised me.

Even Sesame Street is Internet "enhanced" now.

The Bears were my fave growing up! I had a good 30 or so books by them. When I first encountered a Berenstain Bears "play structure" dealio at Valleyfair and Cedair Point years ago, it brought back a lot of memories.

Long live the Big Bad Wolf

The Jersey Shore used to have the ultimate walk through dark rides. They have a tendency to burn down. Supprised Morey's built a new one.

Having been to all of them, Brigatine Castle was the best. It took you a good half hour to walk through.

I was reading on another site that Brigantine Castle was the tallest free standing wood structure in the US at the time. 110 feet tall with 5 full stories of walkthrough.

The Jersey Shore...ultimate walk through dark rides.

There is such a great Snooki joke here, but I don't think I'm allowed to say it.
