Kings Island announces Diamondback

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The biggest and most exciting new attraction in Kings Island's 36-year history, a 5,282-foot long steel hyper roller coaster named Diamondback, will change the landscape for thrill seekers when the ride makes its debut in April 2009.

Diamondback will be the tallest, fastest and meanest roller coaster at Kings Island. The ride will stand 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74 degree angle and reach speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour. The ride features 10 vertical drops overall including drops of 193, 131, 129, 110 and 106 feet, two helixes - one at 323 degrees and the other at 287 degrees - and a spectacular splashdown ending. The ride experience on Diamondback will last more than three heart-pounding minutes.

I was at King's Island for the unveiling. Did not even realize that they were doing the unveiling till we got to the parking and they gave us a flyer with the info on it :)

I ended up standing right next to the stage, behind the press only area, was probably not supposed to be there but nobody kicked me out :)

The que area for the Crypt has been cut down to just as it enters the facade and it looks like the ride will be using the space that formally housed the rest of the que.

The queue will be back, they just had to close it temporarily for construction.
I now have 2 vacations already planned for next year. Dollywood and Kings Island. I just got back from a trip to Canada's Wonderland, Behemoth is an awesome ride and this will be too. For the few of you who think this ride will be no good take a trip to Canada and ride Behemoth and you will change your mind real fast.
Wow great job Kings Island! Cant wait for this one.
Just got back from my KI/CI/SG trip. I don't know if this has been reported in another thread, but there is a Coaster Dynamix model of Diamondback in a window display to the left of the entrance inside the park. (I later saw someone walking by with what appeared to be a CD model of Firehawk, so I'm guessing this had previously done with that installation and I just never noticed it.) It has three trains, though they're depicted as four across, so that's completely wrong. There is no splashdown, of course. Pretty cool to watch it run; it takes about 8 seconds to complete the circuit.

^Just thinking that maybe CD hasn't yet caught up to the new B&M seating configuration?
I love KI and I can't believe that people would complain about any new ride. Like they are going to be happy anyway. I seriously think TatsuRob has waaaay to much spare time on his hands. If you don't like what they are doing, then don't go to the park!

There are pics of the CD model here.
There was a KI employee on hand at the display answering questions about Diamondback. He said "they" -- whomever they are -- had to work for two weeks solid to get the model done in time.

On the front of the Eiffel Tower (the side facing International Street) is a huge banner with the Diamondback logo on it.

Man, I seriously have to join the 1990's and figure out how to upload photos . . .

I'm rather excited about the new coaster. After the whole geauga lake stir up....this should help settle some of that. Its been a while since I been to Kings Island...might give me a reason to go next year.
