Kings Island announces Diamondback

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The biggest and most exciting new attraction in Kings Island's 36-year history, a 5,282-foot long steel hyper roller coaster named Diamondback, will change the landscape for thrill seekers when the ride makes its debut in April 2009.

Diamondback will be the tallest, fastest and meanest roller coaster at Kings Island. The ride will stand 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74 degree angle and reach speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour. The ride features 10 vertical drops overall including drops of 193, 131, 129, 110 and 106 feet, two helixes - one at 323 degrees and the other at 287 degrees - and a spectacular splashdown ending. The ride experience on Diamondback will last more than three heart-pounding minutes.

Sad that the new trains seem to only be able to carry 32 ppl instead of 36. Do I get something for complaining?

But what happened to all of the trees? Waaaaaa....... ;)

I trust Moosh's glowing endorsement of the train arrangement.

The thing that's different about this compared to Nitro is the shape of the hills. Nitro has those sharp hills to accommodate the much shorter single-row trains. These are longer hills like the floaty Intamin rides. And there are lots of them, paired with a whole bunch of really long drops.

I dig it.

Wow it's took 36 years to come up with this crap! I'd hate to see what they come up with if it took 100 hundred years ... a cloned wild mouse. So CF has spent over 20+ million dollars on a B&M cookie cutter pretty much clone. Then to theme it to a Diamond back with red, yellow, and cream colors with a water splash is just as stupid as SF theming a wooden coaster to Terminator. Heck they could of gotten an Intamin megalite at half the cost and the hype they put out would of been worth it. Cp Magnum which is over what 15 20 years old has a much more interesting layout then this over engineered, over used off the self , over priced B&M. I'm sorry i'm just not impressed at all with this announcement, CF and KI should also be let down with this expensive quasi-clone imo. There is nothing original or creative about this ride from the name to the layout and to boast about 36 years in the making to reveil something as lackluster as this project makes everyone involved with this project look like utter idiots imo. Where the hell is INTAMIN with this land, this terrain they would of created a Masterpiece for KI and for probably a few million less. Hell Vekoma would of created a better ride then this for 22 million dollars. 20+ million for absolutely nothing new/orginal or ground breaking, come on people this is ridiculous.

Although it could be better, what they got looks to be one of the best steel coasters ever. I am going back to Ohio next year. :)
^^To each his own, but Kings Island is pretty much my home park and I'm getting a little tired of riding the same so-so steel coasters over and over again, with exceptions. I'm so down for Diamondback and I'm sure the thousands of guests entering and exiting the park on a day-to-day basis will be, too

DiamondbackBuzz?

The ride is defiantly beyond my expectations. Looks to be, easily, the best *looking* B&M hyper to date. Hopefully it rides as good as it looks!

Finally, a reason to go back to Kings Island!

Perhaps the closest thing we'll ever see to a B&M Voyage.

Magnum has a more interesting layout? Bahahaha! Yeah, ok, thanks, I hope you're being so overall sarcastic that none of us could tell...

Looks awesome. This is going to get me back to Kings Island.
I'm pumped up!!!! Can't wait to head to Kings Island next year. What a beautiful coaster and much needed at Kings Island! I hope the fine people in Virginia and Carolina get their own version in the future at Kings Dominion and Carowinds.

I like Magnum more than most, but honestly an interesting layout is not one of its stronger points. ;)
Ok. Setting money aside now for gas to get to KI next year. Even if it's 10.00 a gallon, I'm there.
I would love to see a CoasterBuzz event back at the park. That combo would definitely make me drive up.
Well, since I'll actually be at KI tomorrow, I'll make sure and get the first on-site fantasy ride on Diamondback. :)

BTW, anybody going to Strickers on Sunday?

I believe that this will be the quintessential nighttime steely and will be at the top of many steel coaster rankings in the future.

I sure hope we see some after dark ERT next year.

I'm very impressed. I like the logo a lot! The theme rocks! The layout was not a secret. It looks like a lot of fun!

Basically Nitro, which is not a bad thing at all. This is a great addition to the park. It will have monster capacity and eat huge crowds all day long with very few breakdowns. Way to go, Cedar Fair, with a steady, proven winner!
It looks to be a winner for them already. My debate of going this year is settled, I'm not until next year.

It will be interesting to check out the seats considering i have only rode one such B&M like this and it wasn't Behemoth. The front of the trains and the logos and such are about as wicked looking as anything Cedar Fair has done to this point. Although im still trying to figure out the skulls as of late ie Voodoo, but it isn't a kiddy coaster and is justified with the logo for sure.

Somehow the snakes still haven't left Kings Island completely.

^ Ensign,

This will be the first time I've missed August at Stricker's since I first started going. We leave for Dollywood on Wednesday and were saving every last penny for the fun we'll be having there. But, if they plan to do a Sunday in October, post the date if you find out while there. Best little park I know...love Tornado...and love the food!

Diamondback looks totally mindblowing to me! That side of the park is going to look so wild with this addition. Did anybody make it to the park for the unveiling today? I got an e-mail about it, was planning on going, but ran out of time to get there.
