Paramount's Kings Dominion announced today their 2003 attraction: A 305-foot tall Intamin gyro-drop. The ride has not yet been named, but will open next spring. The Scrambler will be relocated to accomodate the new ride.

Update 6/21: The park today gave the following additional details:

  • 305 ft. tower
  • 272 ft. drop
  • 56 seats
  • 72 mph top speed

Wait, If I am not mistaken, and I don't believe I am, all intamin drop towers are most definately not floorless. On intamin's website, there is a picture of a tower next to their desctiption of their multi-drop ride. While I am not sure what the ride pictured is, it appears to be a standup tower with a floor. As in, not floorless. Almost forgot the link: http://www.intaminworldwide.com/r_products_thrillrides.htm

check out that capacity....56 seats...is that common on a gyro drop??? that would be nice:) PKD is famous for rides that have LOW capacity. this is a nice change:)

Oh wow,I didn't realize the Drop Zone at PKI(318ft) was sinking.

Just think how tall it would be after another 15 years.:(

BBSpeed, almost all Intamin drop rides are floorless. The only ones that aren't are the 1st generations, a stand-up car on the tower at Drayton Maynor, and a few others

Sounds great! I go to PKD at least once a year so I know i'll make it up there next year for this.

Ricochet laps-Approx. 30

Acrophobia holds 30... and Drop Zone at PKI holds 45.

56 seats seems a bit much, but whatever keeps the line down.

Drop Zone is 315ft tall, but with a drop of 264ft going 67mph.

Looks like PKD now has the tallest drop height, but PKI (Drop Zone) is the tallest in tower height.

Technically, PKD would be tied with PKI in tower height since Mark Riddell said that PKI counts a 10 foot antennae for height. But atleast each park has a record.

Oh my gosh - Scrambler is to be relocated???!!!???!!!???!!!

I think I've missed the point.....you know, that bit about the Intamin drop ride....should be a good addition to PKD - they really need someting like that there. I'll be looking forward to my next visit with renewed interest......

Right, thanks RC, I just wanted to make sure people knew that while most are floorless, some aren't

Wow, I've never been on a gyro-drop but they look interesting. I'd like to know if there is much of a, or any difference between a gyro-drop and Intamin 2nd generation freefall ride?

Yes, a 2nd gen has individual sides that drop seperately and a gyro rotates as one.

PKI's Drop Zone Stunt tower is a good capacity ride. With the way PKI trains its associates, it is very possible to get at least 20 drops in an hour meaning 800 riders. As long as the associates are trained properly and move quickly when checking restraints, capacity is no problem. PKI's Drop Zone is still the tallest in the world as far as I'm concerned. A quality ride that I worked on for two seasons; it still scared people.
This is going to be the best ride ever. I can see the tower from the highway! It looks nice :-)
I dont know what any of you are talking about i like the new different look of this ride. Plus it does not compare it Top Thrill Dragster.
Drop Zone at Kings Island IS currently the tallest gyro drop in the world, it stands at 315 ft. and drops you from 267 ft. although dominions drop zone will be the tallest drop, it wont be the tallest tower as kings island will still hold that record! :)
oh and pkds drop will be 273 ft!!! as if u didnt know that already!!! :-D
