Kings Dominion to add Intamin gyro-drop (updated)

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Paramount's Kings Dominion announced today their 2003 attraction: A 305-foot tall Intamin gyro-drop. The ride has not yet been named, but will open next spring. The Scrambler will be relocated to accomodate the new ride.

Update 6/21: The park today gave the following additional details:

  • 305 ft. tower
  • 272 ft. drop
  • 56 seats
  • 72 mph top speed

Coaster Kingdom-If you look at that picture of the annoucement poster, you can see a blue pole thing sticking up to the far right. That(to me) implies a gyro-drop. Thanks Trevor for pointing that out to me(I had the same question as you).

What I don't understand is why Paramount announces these rides so early, giving the competition (SFA, BGW) a chance to come up with something better.

If coasters are your life, than maybe you need to re-examine your life.
Acrophobia is one of my all-time favorite rides, rivaling some of my favorite coasters. For guys, it doesn't hurt at all if you position yourself correctly. This includes pulling the entire package away from your body right as you get ready to sit on the seat (don't worry about being seen, you see every guy do it). Then, you pull your harness down, buckle the seatbelt, and you are good to go. The only problem is if you place you bottom too close to the end of the seat, when you land, your bottom will hurt. Personally, I am always excited when a new drop ride opens, and this should be incredible. The higher the better! :)

"Enjoy your record-breaking ride on Millennium Force"

I hope they name it Drop Zone even though there are 4 others with the same name. Personally, I like the colors and the name.
A great move by pkd with no other drop rides in the area this was a well thought out addition .

Though I am questioning if this will be the tallest since pki's is 315 feet tall, that is why I am wondering if this could be a taller version of acrophobia, which if this is the case would then give it some kind of record, and would add to the thrill factor of the ride. Either way many vistors to pkd will be pleased next year!

I can almost for certain say this will be called drop zone! *** This post was edited by coasterspaz on 6/20/2002. ***

Other parks can't just 'come up' with something. Future attractions are planned years in advance.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! W00H00 !@!@!@!***
When they advertise it's going to be 305 feet. Could it actualy be taller than what there are saying? Would it be higher than 315feet?

What has taken them so darn long to get a drop ride, anyway, especially with the other 4 Paramount Parks operating them for a little while? I understand that they had other capital improvements over the years, but I figured they would get this long ago.

Perhaps they waited for the smoke to clear when the one in California lost a rider....

Hopefully, we will see another flat ride along with it.

man, this is SAWEET!!!! PKD never dissapoints....im so proud to have her as my home park:) cant wait to ride this thing!!! :)

Tim (hey, if we cant get a hyper, then a 300+ foot drop tower is the next best thing:))

"hi, my name is Tim, and im a coasterholic"...."Hi Tim!!" hehe:)

I think this may have something to do with Kings Dominion getting approval from the Planning Commission first - I hear that sometimes it takes years to get rides approved, as we've seen from the Stratosphere in Vegas. This ride will most DEFINITELY be seen by everybody on I-95.

Another quick comment: I think Kings Dominion is finally going in the right direction with this ride - maybe they'll be getting a B&M within the next few years!

its my park to only an 1hr away, YAY its a drop ride, OH mY GOD, and the most unnerving experience for me is drop rides, cause I have vertigo. I cannot imagin drop that high, I have only been on SFA's drop ride, 14 storys high and thats enough, Oh lord save me, I am going to dropping longer than Millenium Force, and that high just freaks me out. For those of you who have conquered higher than 220 ft, can you tell me how to prepare for this. JP, of course I will ride this thing cause I just get crazy, BUT ALL I ASK IS THAT THEY MAKE THIS RIDE LONGER THAN HYPER SONIC, I mean keep us up there for awhile so we can actually enjoy the ride, and say that we have atleast one long ride. And another thing for those of you in the area, LETS SEE WHO GETS TO OPPERATE THIS THING, PKD employee....hopefully for 2003 (hey that rhymes) for this 305 tf thingy!!!!

YES !!!!!! like PKD says, they'll take us higher ( if you pay attention to the commercials) from Last year

Go for it!!!

Not All Coasters are Created Equally

I thought Hellavator was sweet...then came Giant Drop...then Power Tower...then PKI's Drop Zone... just like coasters, they keep getting bigger and better ! I wish the Intamin ones had multiple drops though. They should add a LIM launch to it...but instead of a Power Shot-type launch, have it climb and drop, then launch and drop - but with a delay, so you think it's over, and then woooosh ! Up to the top again !

Current favorite coasters:
Wooden: 1) Beast 2) Raven 3) Son of Beast 4) The Boss 5) Timber Wolf
Steel: 1) Raging Bull 2) Millennium Force 3) V2 4) Wild Thing 5) Mr. Freeze

I don't think its taller, I think they are just using that as a marketing deal as most people don't know about PKI. I think they would anounce the actual height of the tower not the drop.

Can we change the name of Top Gun to your mom so no one wants to ride your mom?

Here is the proof that its an intamin, LOOK AT THE PICTURE! If you see the blue thing, it looks exactly like an intamin gyro drop!

You are the passengers on a most uncommon elevator, about to ascend into your very own episode of the Twilight Zone

Joe, Intamin currently makes 5 different towers:

- Free Fall (like at Cedar Point)

- Giant Drop (seperate vhicles, can be sitting/stand-up/floorless stand-up)

- Gyro Drop (same as GD, but with a ring around the tower, can be sitting/stand-up)

- Bungee Drop (Giant Drop, but with a highspeed jojo effect)

- Ballistic Power Tower (the Space Shot by Intamin)

It's up to the parks to choose. If they want too, a launched tower is available (Bungee Drop or Ballistic Power Tower)

Starcoasters, you think Batwing was developed years ahead by Six Flags? Hell no. When PKD added Hypersonic, Six Flags decided to add Batwing. I would expect a similar "retaliation" next year.

Now I wish that PKD would add rides that move people and don't breakdown. All thier big rides..Volcano, Hypersonic XlC, Flight of Fear..suffer from low capacities and high breakdowns:( The need a decent Mega-Coaster...something like X to really put them on the map:( PKD has the longest lines of any park I have ever been too..
