Kings Dominion to add Intamin gyro-drop (updated)

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Paramount's Kings Dominion announced today their 2003 attraction: A 305-foot tall Intamin gyro-drop. The ride has not yet been named, but will open next spring. The Scrambler will be relocated to accomodate the new ride.

Update 6/21: The park today gave the following additional details:

  • 305 ft. tower
  • 272 ft. drop
  • 56 seats
  • 72 mph top speed

Related parks

A gyro drop is definitely not a people mover - the ride takes a very long time to load and unload and the ascent is VERY slow.

But either way, it's a good addition for King's Dominion.

Wow I just realized pkd has 3 luanched coasters. probobly the most of any park. thats why all the breakdowns and long lines

Branden in the same post you ask for a reliable ride and a prototype that still needs the bugs worked out like X. I think this is a great addition for PKD and it will go great with their other rides.
Does this mean Shockwave stays another season. Its great to see a Togo stand up still standing.

OK - does anyone have a real answer for my original question? How can they claim it's the tallest gyro drop when it's 10 feet shorter than PKI's? And if 305 is the actual drop height, why the heck wouldn't they advertise the (probably much higher) height of the tower itself?!?

Jeff? Anyone?

My guess is it's like Acrophobia, with the tilt. I agree with you, Den. They would definitely advertise the tower height, not the drop.

Can someone tell me what the differences between a sit down gyro drop, a stand up gyro drop, a floorless gyro drop, a giant drop, and an acrophobia are?

I never really got into the whole drop tower thing.

-----------------
A rollercoaster? What's that?

Sit-down gyro drop has a ring of forty seats. Stand-up gyro drop has bike seats, and tilts you forward before you drop. All the gyro drops are floorless. A giant drop is a second-generation Intamin drop ride, where there are 4 to 8 separate cars with 4 seats each. Acrophobia is just Six Flags Over Georgia's name for their stand-up gyro drop.

What are the relative heights and types of PKI's, SFoG's and any other gyro drops?

I don't think it has been mentioned yet so I just thought I would put it on here.

The official Kings Island site list specs of Dropzone:

Height of tower: 315 ft

Height from which riders drop: 264 ft

I just added additional details the park provided today regarding height.

Intamin drop rides------

1st generation Intamin freefall- ala Demon Drop @ CP & Freefall @ SFMM

2nd generation Intamin freefall- ala Drop Zone @ PGA & Pitt Fall @ Kennywood & Giant Drop @ Dreamworld (tallest freefall in world)

Gyro Drop- ala Drop Zone @ PKI (tallest gyro in world)

Standing Gyro Drop- Acrophobia @ SFoG

Intamin reverse freefall (coaster, or not, depends on who you talk to) - ala S:TE @ SFMM & ToT @ Dreamworld

Anyways, sounds like PKD is making some good moves. Fixing Hypersonic (hopefully it'll run consistently) was a step in the right direction, and this is definitely a smart move, as PKD really needed something w/height. But, they still need a quality, LONG steel hyper!

What's the capacity per cycle of PKI's Drop Zone tower?
Hmmmm looks like this has more seats, causing higher speed, and is about 8 feet taller drop wise. Its fine they can have a shorter ride if they want it. If you think though say cycle time is 5 mins 56x12 672 people per hour which isn't bad for a drop ride.

Can we change the name of Top Gun to your mom so no one wants to ride your mom?

Acrophobia only holds 30...seems more like a PKI Drop Zone than an Acrophobia.

-----------------
My two favorite coasters are named Superman.

PKI's drop zone is 315ft so isnt it the tallest? but drop zone at pki goes 61mph? and this 1 will go 72? and its 10 ft shorter....hmmmm.......
Holy crap! That's high as hell. And.......what's that, a picture in a post?!?

The funny thing is, they have a wall put up in June that says there is a free fall ride coming a year from now. They could just build it now and have it open for the 4th of July weekend. ;)
