Kennywood Park press conference scheduled

Posted | Contributed by Brett

Thursday, August 10, is the date that has been announced by Kennywood Park to hold a press conference to announce the new coaster. I know this as a fact because my father works at KDKA TV in Pittsburgh.

It's because you don't really know. No one knows, everything is just speculation and rumors.

Who do you think will design the new coaster? I feel that (& I'm hoping) that D.H. Morgan designs the new coaster but I've heard a lot of rumors of Arrow Dynamics designing the coaster too. Screamscape.com says DH Morgan and they are usually right about rumors. Arrow coasters are rough & the only good one is Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point.

The only Arrow coasters I have ridden are Anaconda (PKD), Drachen Fire, and Loch Ness Monster. It's been over 7 years since I rode DF and I liked it enough to want to ride it again. I rode Anaconda on Thursday and it seems a lot rougher than it was just a couple of years ago, or maybe smoother looping coasters like Volcano and Alpengeist have upped the ante. Loch Ness is still a solid ride for me. If Steel Phantom is as rough as the Outer Limits at PKI and PKD then I guess I'll swear off the trip. Maybe I'll just wait next year and do a Cedar Point/Kennywood/PKI loop. What about SFO then? I've heard mixed things about that park.
Arrow also did "Viper" at PKI didn't they, that's a good coaster.
Also, I'll wait for the official news but I do plan to ride Steel Phantom this month before it leaves labor day.
That is Vortex at PKI.

I'll post the TR later, but riding Steel Phantom again, my second time, I want to be there when they light the cutting torch to rip that thing down. Hell, it deserves dynamite. My friend Brandon was grabbing his neck asking, "We drove here from Cleveland for that?" (Fortunately he fely it was well worth it after riding the other coasters.)

Alpen,I live close to Richmond, and the drive to Cedar Point is not bad at all,as long as you got the funds,go for it.
Ouch, Jeff, the ref takes a point away.

I must be strangely designed, because its getting smoother every ride. I wear my glasses and put my hands up, no problemo.

Whats wrong with you people?? I bet people hated rides like the Crystal Beach Cyclone, and the Revere Beach Lightning too. Now they're legends.

(sorry about the cynicism)
Millennium Force, I completely agree. I've ridden Steel Phantom on two occasions now ('98 and '00) and never once did I feel it was rough. Intense as hell? Yes, definitely. But not rough. I'm 5'10" and 155lbs. I rarely ever find coasters rough, but Phantom is not bad at all. I will be there closing day to bid it farewell. It will definitely be missed by me.

:(
I rode The Beast, and in the back, during the day when it was warmed up, it was rough as hell-I'm talking roughest coaster I've even ridden, this thing beat me around, and I loved every minute of it. To put it into a perspective that I can compare, is it rougher than The Beast?
Time to defend Steel Phantom once again. Can't you guys handle a little pain? So it's a little rough, DEAL WITH IT. I'm sick of people thinking they're sounding cool by saying "they want to be there when they tear it down" and attempting to come up with creative ways of tearing it down. I think those who call Cedar Point their home are all spoiled.
They should of made it at thier kennykon this year.

Why should I "deal" with discomfort? I'd rather not ride it. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with my manhood or anything like that. Between my shoulders getting slammed around and the head banging as those stupid Arrow trains shift around and bounce off of the turns, I don't find it fun at all. Severe head trauma isn't my idea of fun.

If you like the abuse, good for you, I guess that makes you a better person than I. However, if my complaints were unfounded, they certainly wouldn't be tearing it down, now would they?

I just found this out: the Press Conference will be held @ 12:30pm August 10.

Just to add something, I've ridden the Phantom dozens of times, and I don't see why all of you are complaining it is so rough. If you know how to brace yourself, it isn't so bad.
I enjoy riding the Steel Phantom, but some of my family members don't like it. I rode it 3 times before I started to feel discomfort.

Brett - Where did you find out that the announcement will be held at 12:30? Do you know how tall the coaster will be? I was thinking giga, but do you really think so?

KPGUY
Jeff its not that I ENJOY pain, its just that I dont find it on steel phantom.

Im not telling you to run out there and punish yourself some more, but just know that it's really an enjoyable ride for me.

Personally, my definition of abuse would be raging wolf bobs, at SFO. That actually gave me a headache, unlike any other ride. That and KONG at SFMW.

I wish I could pinpoint something I do that makes SP so much smoother, but it just seems to be that way. Im not a "Save the Phantom" (pointless) type guy, but I do love the ride. I hate to see how the GP regulates what we get to ride.
Nothing is too rough for me.
I ride the coaster once and if rough i figure how to hold my head and enjoy the ride.
Roughest is Outer Limits:FOF & Mean Streak

BACK TO SP. I have never rode it but I will eventually get to Kennywood and ride the new coaster, IF its a GIGA. Otherwise I doubt I'll make the trip

P.S. How do you know its 12:30?
They announced today at KennyKon that the press conference WILL indeed be on Thursday, August 10th. They initially announced 1:00pm, but Mary Lou then said "actually 1:30", so you got me. SOMETIME on Thursday ;)

And we're absolutely sure it's not open to the public?

In regards to all of the anti-Steel Phantom sentiments...

I've been on the ride many times, and I honestly don't feel that it's a horrible ride or that it "deserves dynamite" or anything like that. It's one of my favorite coasters (#2 on my list), and I don't think it gets the respect it truly deserves.

For the past 9 years, this ride has been the king of thrillseekers who live around here. Towards the end of every school year, my high school has a Kennywood Day (as I'm sure most local school districts do). Like clockwork, around that time, people suddenly become grouped into one of two groups: The group who've been on SP, and the group who hasn't. It really is THE ride around here. We take pride in having it here.

The Steel Phantom really represents Western Pennsylvania in the perfect way. It's not the most beautiful, it's not the smoothest, it's not even the biggest anymore...

But it delivers, and that's all we around here really want.
