Kennywood Park press conference scheduled

Posted | Contributed by Brett

Thursday, August 10, is the date that has been announced by Kennywood Park to hold a press conference to announce the new coaster. I know this as a fact because my father works at KDKA TV in Pittsburgh.

And if you guys are still wondering if it will be steel or woood, some think it will be wood. Kennywood announced that the new coaster will definitley be steel.

At KennyKon when I was in line for the thunderbolt I saw some markings behind the turtle. To me it looked like thats were the turnaround would be.
THE PRESS CONFERENCE WILL BE ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 10 AT 1PM. THIS INFO COMES STRAIGHT FROM KENNYWOOD SPOKESPERSON MARY LOU ROSEMEYER AT KENNY KON.
I hope it's a giga coaster, or at least a steel coaster taller and better than the Steel Phantom!

The only coaster I've ever had a problem with was the outer limits and Mean Streak after riding it twice in a row. But it's not like I want to see those coasters torn out either. I'll ride each one every time I visit their respective parks. The Steel Phantom is VERY intense, that's why me, like so many of my fellow coaster buddies love it so. You don't know which way is up after you finish the first loop, and when you walk off it takes a minute to get your legs under you, but so what. There's plenty of tame rides at Kennywood, and lots of woodies to keep everyone else happy. Hope the new ride has loops, getting sick and tired of non-looping coasters. I rode the MF 7 times this year, LOVE it, but I love the Phantom too. 4 weeks ago went to say goodbye to it. Rode it somewhere between 7 and 10 times, no lines at all. Close to closing time a group of us rode it 3 times straight without getting out of the cars!!!!!!! I'll sure miss it, it's sad knowing that in another couple months I'll never get to ride it again. :-( I know this coaster isn't for everyone, I hear lots of people complaining about getting beat up on it, I never said it was the smoothest ride on the planet, I just wish Kennywood could add coasters without destroying coasters. As far as all the people that want to be there with blowtorches to help rip it out, well I never knew any true coaster enthusiast who wanted to see a coaster destroyed. Just because you don't like it there are plenty of people who do, and it is a shame to those of us who do appreciate the Phantom, to hear other coaster fans say they'd love to rip it out. Your supposed to get a rush when you ride a coaster, the Phantom DELIVERS!!!

At kennykon they told us about the new coaster a bit. They said it will be called E.t. and it will go voer the river by a bridge, have a turn over there, and come back that way. It will be one hell of a ride dont you guys think. Remember to tune in to www.coasterbuzz.com on aug 10th for updated info on the new coaster.
Holy Cow!! All of these posts for this news...that's GREAT!!!

Alpenlochwolf, please don't listen to Mr. Mad Dog, it's your last chance, make the effort to go to Kennywood. Not only for the Phantom, but for the sheer beauty that the park holds. I'm making another trip in September just to ride it again, before it is dismantled. It's as rough and sandpaper, but is well worth it. It's the first time that I had to use both hand rails down the exit. My body was so out of wack, I got back in line. Just make the effort, if you have cash flow problems, the park is the cheapest we found this season. It's now my #2 park.

There's nothing like a woodie...
To anyone wondering if they should make the trip to ride it, YES you should. Yes it's a little rough, but it's intensity is enuqauled. Also no one has said anything about it but a night ride is mindnumbing. Picture this, your sitting in the front seat, stairing down a 225' drop but you can't see the track at the bottom because it has disappeared into a BLACK VOID. I've ridden other coasters in the dark and NOTHING compares.

I was at KennyKon as well and yes, they're saying nothing until Thursday.

Regarding the roughness of the Phantom, I think it all depends on where you sit. I rode it 3 or 4 times yesterday. When I rode in the back, the jolt at the end of The Curve was intense but not painful. When I rode in the middle of the train, it felt horrible. The rest of the ride felt like an Arrow multi-element being taken way too fast.

As an acer, I need to say if you dont enjoy it, dont ride it. Its not important enough to punish yourself so you can gain other peoples respect, if thats important at all.

Who needs arms? I say all you need is a psycho (me) who rides with a psycho friend!

Cant wait until next week, breaking 60 rides on SP that day. Sadly, second last trip to the black monstrosity...
I finally found someone that might be willing to take the 6-hour or so trip with me up to Kennywood. I will definitely get to Cedar Point, just not this year. I'm sure all the rides I want to ride at CP will be there next year (Magnum, MF, Raptor, Mantis, etc.) but Steel Phantom won't be around. Hell, on my way back from CP I can make a run over to Kennywood and ride whatever new ride is announced. I can handle roughness, just as long as it's no worse than Outer Limits.
Pne quick question: I will probably making the trip for a weekend...how will lines be at Kennywood on a weekend (compared to, say, Busch Gardens Williamsburg on a weekend)?
Let's have a contest to predict the stats for the new 2001 Kennywood Roller Coaster and we'll see who is the closest when the announce the stats on Thursday, August 10th!

Here is my prediction:

Maximum Drop: 260 FT
Maximum Speed: 88 MPH
Designer: D.H. Morgan

Well I dont think that the new coaster will just be a regular coaster. Kennywood said the coaster would be like no other. And i saw recent rumors the the track was red steel. This is just a guess but i wouldn't be surprised if it was a looping giga. Wouldn't that be something. It would be like the Steel Phantom but bigger. It would describe the commercial because it would keeping the lengend of the phantom living on. I hope this is true.
I was at Kennykon yesterday for my first time. I would have to say I did not find Steel Phantom to be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I have come off corkscrew with my head hurting MUCH worse then SP.

Sure it's a little rough, but so is Magnum at times.

This is how I was thinking of it- put some OTSR's Magnum and you have roughness on Magnum just as bad if not worse than Steel phantom.

Just my opinion, but I like this ride.

I noticed someone used the word "h-e-l-l", please, this site is viewed by all age groups, ethnic backgrounds and religions, it may be offending to some.

Im a large Phantom Phan, I like the intensity, the speed, and the overall ride and art, but I must agree with taking the poor soul out.

Why? Lets itemize the bad here...

1. when a train comes back with guests saying "ow" you have a ride thats not good
2. ridership decrease
3. higher costs..lower profit
4. extensive repairs
5. bad reputation (example: "oh dont ride that, its rough!")
6. cheaper to replace than reprofile
7. more trouble than its worth
8. lawsuits that cost the park $$$ yearly (they do exist)

2 and 3 are the biggest ones

There are 1000 resons that all of you think it should stay, but a park is a business, and Kennywood really cant afford to lose money on a ride that gets less riders a year (except this year)

Jeff, I agree with you, why have a ride that hurts? Especially in todays parks, Its not good for business. In the 20's and 30's, most rides were rough, and lawsuites were few.

I got 13 rides this weekend, about 11 of those was rough somewhere, and I know every inch on that thing, people who don't ride this often really must get it bad.

It was an iffy design to begin with..it should have been reprofiled the second year, Arrow had the technology then, but i don't think they knew it.

Anyway, I'd rather not see it go, but with its effect on "everyday" guests, it may be one of the best decisions the park makes.

***My Hypothesis on the new coaster:*****
mfg: Morgan
style: sit down out and back, w/lap bars, seatbelts
name: something referring to Phantom (notice Pittsburg commericals)
(example: Sky Ghost or Phantoms Revenge or Monster Mash)
hieght/drop: 300+
legnth: 4000'+
duration: 2:25
trims: indeed
speed: well over 90
uses: station from Phantom
hieght restriction (I hope): 48"

"I wish they all could be Rollercoaster girls"
I say the following:

MFG: D.H. Morgan

Drop: 325 feet

Speed: Somewhat fast, because it will be carrying speed from the first hill. Possibly 100MPH?

Length: 2 drops and a helix, 3400 feet ish. Possible bunny hops.

Will use station from Phantom, and maybe some supports/footers.

Name: ANYTHING but Son of Phantom. Or for that matter, anything that has to do with SP.
Millenium Force, I hope your right! Can't wait til Thursday!

I am going to be travelling to Kennywood for the first time in August of next year. I am hoping that the new coaster WILL be a record breaker, because I can't ride Millenium Force for a couple of years...oh well. I'm sure it'll be a great coaster. A looping giga coaster is highly unlikely, but another giga like Millenium Force wouldn't be bad, now would it? Anyways, I can't wait for the announcement. Peace. :D
I will be making my first trip to Kennywood next year probebly in June. I have been dying to go there for years. Even if the coaster is not a Giga (which I hope it is!) I will be looking forward to riding the new coaster and the other great coasters. I doubdt it would be shorter or the drop would not be as long as SP. Its seems pretty likely that the coaster will at least beat SP. The major question is will it beat MF and SD for longest drop?? My GUESS:
-330 ft long drop into a ravine (lift height 230')
-over 95mph
-designed by Morgan
Am I crazy or was anyone else shocked to see someone get antsy about the word h-e-l-l being used (quite casually, in fact) in a post? It's a word that is used on TV, in books (even in the Bible :)), and in almost every part of everyday life. Isn't there a neighborhood known as Hell's Kitchen in New York? Good GOSH, has everyone gone PC? Look at the context a word is being used before censoring. I feel like I'm in an Orwellian novel or something... *** This post was edited by Alpenlochwolf on 8/9/2000. ***
Why morgan? Intamin is the best!!. Morgan sucks compared to them!!! Morgan uses thrim brakes and crappy crappy lap bars. The seat belts on Millennium force I cant's even feel. Intamin actually makes good drops, that are steep. Why would you want trim brakes. Kennywood dosnt really use them except on phantom so they can ease the ride.
