Hades @ Big Chiefs

I hope your right on that date Moosh. I'm going to be in the Dells on the 15th and 16th and would love to try it out. I figure though that if I don't get to ride it then, I'll be back next year for Hades.

It is Wood on steel and has several tunnels including to the lifthill

The ride does seem to be steel-structured, but there only seems to be *one* tunnel so far, and it's *not* a tunnel to the lift.

Also, don't count on Avalanche opening in ten days. :)

I understand in certain regions why the steel structure would be good, but is this just a gci preference on some coasters? or only on their taller coasters?

also, why does michigan's adventure (a CCI) have so much wood on the sides?

GCI has never done a steel structured wooden coaster. CCI did a quite a few. S&S is opening two this year [Avalance, Tsunami]. If Hades has steel supports it'll be Gravity Group's first steel supported coaster.

The reason for steel over wood is cost and maintenance. It has nothing to do with a coaster's height. The three tallest woodies in the world [Colossus, Rattler, SOB] are all wood supported.

Michigan Adventure has two CCIs [three if you consider that Dinn Corp morphed into CCI] but I assume you're talking about Shivering Timbers. It has wood on the sides to give the ride support.

The ride will feature steel supports. they can be seen in the pics of the ride on rcdb.com
Two reasons for the extra wood on ST... occasional high winds off the lake, and partially by request of the owner for aesthetic reasons. :)
It looks like the first drop on Hades is going to swoop to the right and go into that long underground tunnel. That should be cool. I may be at the Dells next Thursday and then again the following Monday. I wonder what my chances are of getting a ride on Avalanche. Probably not too good.

edit: I just noticed that the stats at rcdb for Avalanche have changed to 88' 6" tall and 2378' long. I believe the old stats were 76' tall and 2316' long.

I hope that first picture is NOT the first drop! It looks very good but I am hoping that is like the second hill so that it can really flies over that hill!! It looks like about 85-90 feet tall and Big Chief's need to go abot 130' tall to have the tallest lifthill and 150'+ drop to have the biggest woodie drop.
RavenTTD: Your chances of riding Avalache are, unfortunately, about zero. There are four hills to be constructed yet, and the ride needs to be tracked. I think we're looking at another three weeks at least, probably more.

I'm pretty sure the drop pictured on RCDB is, in fact, Hades' first drop. The way it seems to round out on top suggests, to me, that it's the top of a lift. I do not know how tall it stands, but remember that the tunnel is awfully deep.

Pink Floyd Fanatic, 150' to have the biggest woodie drop where? In the park or 1978.
Zeus is 90' tall with a 85' drop and the press release said Hades would be the largest ride at MtOlympus. As for other comparisons, I believe they changed the wording to "one of the largest".
If that drop isn't the first, I can only imagine how massive this is going to be. Still looks like a kick-butt drop. Just a question, will an official layout ever be released? Not now, but closer to the rides opening...

PinkFloydFanatic - sorry, that's the first drop.
I would imagine that the construction in those pictures shows the highest point on the ride, hence the flags that crown the structure.

Ya think? ;)
It doesn't look taller than Zeus. Mamoosh how do you know all these things other people don't know about like this being the first drop and that the S&S woodie is a done deal for Cypress Gardens? I hope the S&S woodie for CG IS true because I'd expect it be be much like Tsunumi and Avalanche and it looks like both are trying to tie for the steepest woodie drop in North America.
You're too sarcastic, Moosh. This board really is getting brutal...

PinkFloydFanatic - lots of people know the same stuff I do.

Rob - I love you! ;)

But Moosh who are your sources for the S&S woodie @ CG? First Drop magazine? I have heard they are not very reliable and have been wrong several times. *** Edited 6/2/2004 9:36:18 PM UTC by Pink Floyd Fanatic***

Sorry but if I revealed my sources they would no longer be my sources. I only talk about what I've been given the green light to make public.

But on the plus side they are only correct 99% of the time, so perhaps you are right and CG isn't getting the S&S woodie.
