Footers

earthqueakes right?

Is an earthqueake when the ground makes an audible noise similar to that of a dog toy?

Sorry... I couldn't resist ;) But if you want to avoid getting yelled at by other members, you might want to check out this link, noting numbers 1 and 6.

Here is a link that shows you how a rollercoaster is built over water.

The rollercoaster on that site is Hercules @ DP. They explain in great detail how they built the banked turn over the lake. Yes, they really do drain those bodies of water when they build a ride over water.

DD...true enough, but GASM is a woodie that goes overwater too....and unlike Herc, it's GOOD...(apologies in advance to jeremy and anyone else who deludes themselves into thinking Herc is even *decent*)...
is the lake that hercules stand on real or man made?

i got it now "how a footer is put in a lake" ;)

Rollergator, I wasn't referring to the quality of the ride. What I was referring to was the process of building a rollercoaster over water. Why would you start a nonsense flame war over a coaster when we were talking about footers? Getting back on topic,,,I'm pretty sure that lake is real ColossusHennesay.

thanks, how do they drain these lakes tho' ?

They use a really powerful pump.

all of it just sounds so fascinating.... my desire for rollercoasters..... :)

S:RoS is a natrual lake and when they were doing construction they had a box shaped thing in the water and i guess that's how they got it into the water :)

DD....sorry, getting caught up having fun....flame war my arse....the only person who MIGHT have been offended would've been the guy I was *jabbing*....he's not responding to either *barb* I threw his way (not even "Enthusiast Barbie"), so I guess jeremy is busy at work....he'll catch up later!

P.S. That's what we mean when we talk about trading innocent jokes with firends....;)

What about Anaconda at PKD and it's underwater tunnel thing?

I lost my hat on Poison Ivy. How pathetic.

OoooH. what about "Vanish" it's at one of the park in japan.... that one looks cool i wonder how that one was made.

Although some places they can't put the footers in the water "Great Bear @ Hershey" the coaster designer needs to come up with interesting supports.

As for depth of footers, it all depends on the soil compaction. For that they take a metal rod with a weight stand it up, then drop the weight a few times and measure how far the rod sinks. If it sinks to much they will pack down the soil and try it again.

Actually, if you are building something the size of a coaster, you normally take soil borings instead of just pounding a rod into the ground.

The answer to almost all of the questions asked in this thread is, 'It all depends." There are many ways to do any job and they differ depending on local soil (water) conditions, the coaster that you are building, local construction costs, the preferences of the engineer involved. the politics of the area, and the phase of the moon:).
