Is an earthqueake when the ground makes an audible noise similar to that of a dog toy?

The rollercoaster on that site is Hercules @ DP. They explain in great detail how they built the banked turn over the lake. Yes, they really do drain those bodies of water when they build a ride over water.

Rollergator, I wasn't referring to the quality of the ride. What I was referring to was the process of building a rollercoaster over water. Why would you start a nonsense flame war over a coaster when we were talking about footers? Getting back on topic,,,I'm pretty sure that lake is real ColossusHennesay.

They use a really powerful pump.

all of it just sounds so fascinating.... my desire for rollercoasters..... :)

S:RoS is a natrual lake and when they were doing construction they had a box shaped thing in the water and i guess that's how they got it into the water :)

Although some places they can't put the footers in the water "Great Bear @ Hershey" the coaster designer needs to come up with interesting supports.

As for depth of footers, it all depends on the soil compaction. For that they take a metal rod with a weight stand it up, then drop the weight a few times and measure how far the rod sinks. If it sinks to much they will pack down the soil and try it again.

Actually, if you are building something the size of a coaster, you normally take soil borings instead of just pounding a rod into the ground.

The answer to almost all of the questions asked in this thread is, 'It all depends." There are many ways to do any job and they differ depending on local soil (water) conditions, the coaster that you are building, local construction costs, the preferences of the engineer involved. the politics of the area, and the phase of the moon:).
