Flying Turns Update

I grew up on the far eastside of Cleveland, approximately 20 miles from Euclid Beach Park. From the age of 3 or 4 until I graduated from college, I went to Euclid Beach park several times each summer. My favorite rides were the Flying Turns and the Thriller. During the summer of 1960 when I had just turned sixteen, I was allowed drive to EBP for an all day one price event. It was a cold and cloudy August day with rain threatening. The park was virtually empty. Fortunately it never rained. My three friends and I rode the Thriller 75 times and the Flying Turns 50 times. The day is one of my fondest memories from my teenage years.

Today a friend sent me a video he found on YouTube. The video is of a film shot on the opening day for the Euclid Beach Flying Turns in 1929. Searching YouTube, I two other Flying Turns videos. Doing a Google search turned up more information and pictures of the EBP Flying Turns and a link to this site.

I've read all of the posts on the 32 pages in this thread and haven't seen any reference to the information I'm posting below. I appoligize if it appears elsewhere on CoasterBuzz.

Crazy how women wore such nice dresses and men wore ties to the amusement park back then lol, very nice videos though.

Btw, looking at the webcam now (the one most be snowed over lol) Makes me just want to grab my sled and head up to Knoebels :)

P18, it probably wasn't until the 1950's that women wore slacks in public at all. And it was scandalous for anyone but little kids to wear shorts.

For a lot of people back then, a day at the amusement park was a social occasion that warranted dressing up. Probably for a lot of working people, the only day they could go was Sunday, another reason for dressing up. Nowadays, I wish some people I see at parks would be more covered up.

It might be a fun publicity stunt to get people in period costume to ride the Turns when it opens.

Nowadays, I wish some people I see at parks would be more covered up.

Amen to that. I'm not one for telling people what to wear, but some people should know better than to wear certain things. Kinda makes you wish for my stringent amusement park dress codes. How about a "no tuxedo, no service" rule? ;)

A tuxedo might be overkill. But I really don't care to know how many tattoos people have on their inner thighs or just above their butt cracks. Or the people who look like a pound of bologna stuffed into a half-pound casing.

So anyway, how 'bout them Turns?

I heard they were Flying...

You have disturbed the forbidden temple, now-you-will-pay!!!

^Through turns?

Bolliger/Mabillard for President in '08 NOT Dinn/Summers

Better than Turning Flies, I suppose.
I was reading on another site that the Flying Turns may not open until the end of the summer. Having problems with the cars.

Yep and some reacted as "aww man! I'm not going to Knoebels this summer!" Lame.

I'm giving the park the benefit of the doubt with this project. If this rumor is indeed true it's a bummer, but it won't keep me from going to enjoy Phoenix, Twister, Skooters, Flyers and the rest. It's not like were paying higher admission for a park that won't open a new major ride until Memorial Day or 4th of July because Knoebels is free!

Knoebels without the Flying Turns is like a nice, juicy and tender piece of Filet Mignon that isn't wrapped in bacon. ;)

Hmmmm, do you have another analogy for vegetarians?

Yes. It's like a nice, juicy, tender piece of pineappple that isn't wrapped in bacon. ;)
The latest info from Coastin' Steve is that, although he hasn't been there lately, from what he's heard the problem is that they're still tinkering with the trains, so they probably won't be able to get any additional trains built before the end of the season. But they still think they'll be able to open it early in the season with one train.

How exactly is Knoebels free? Sure, it's free to walk around and do nothing, but the last time I went I sure spent a lot of money so I could actually ride something.

Like I said before, thank goodness my ride tickets have no expiration date since they now go back to 2006. And if The Flying Turns don't open, do you think I'm going to spend the gas money (which will most likely shoot through the roof by summer) to drive up and back to nowhere Pennsylvania? Highly unlikely.

I didn't see anybody saying you had to. We nowhere-ians don't care one way or the other where you drive or spend your money.

What I and others are saying is that if the park was worth visiting before Dick announced his intention of building the ride it's worth visiting with the ride built but not open.

But, I can also understand wanting to wait until it's open to visit.

RGB, I understand your point, but I should've been more specific and said that I really want to visit Elysburg again. I'm just not going to do it until The Flying Turns is fully up and running.

I'd really like to do the HP/KG/DP triangle again, but I'm not waiting until August to go to HP again. That's a mistake I will never repeat.

I will agree that calling the area "Nowhere Pennsylvania" insults the people who live there, but you have to understand that I'm a suburban person. Take me out of the suburbs or city, and I start getting slightly nervous:)
