Flying Turns Update

Who needs a sled, you could have a good ride just sitting on your butt. Or else "borrow" a tray from Phoenix Junction and make your own luge. :)
I just posted a bunch of pictures from the construction tour on my website AirPhoenix.

Here is the direct link:

Hope you enjoy...

Great shots Brian, that had to be a little chilly though! I lucked out over New Years as it wasn't too bad temperature wise, it's been frigid the last few days though! Did they have the big heater going or no?

Yes the heater was on. In order to bend the wood they have to soak it in water. It would freeze and crack if they didn't have the heater. It made for an enjoyable leasurly stroll through the trough. :) I also took many pics and video.

Big Honkin' BUMP for this thread to inform you that Coastin' Steve has added a couple of pages of FT picts plus a couple of sleeping coaster photos as well. One interesting shot includes the concrete footer(not footers, footer) for the initial helix.

Awesome! Glad to see all of these updates, and some very nice pictures. Also glad to see the bents being built so the helix can go up soon.
Geesh! I need to get out to Kenobles and ride this thing! Sounds like a bobsled on steroids. Any idea on what this thing will top out at for speed?

glad to see new updates i was about to ask if they was even working on the flying turns due to the amount of snow we got and how cold its been! nice pictures.

Seth, there's no such thing as bad weather, just thr wrong clothing.

As long as they're not using lost technology for clothes, they'll be fine! ;)

so that means dispite the really cold weather and all the snow we got they are still working on the ride and never took a break from it due to the weather... i just thought they might of because it looked like the webcams got turned off... anyway good to hear that they are not letting anything get in there way of getting this ride done... i can't wait til its done and to ride it.

Don't let the *speed* fool yinz...it's going to seem WAY faster than the numbers would lead you to believe. Proximity of rider to trough means vastly increased *feeling* of speed. All about perception... ;)
gator, you been hanging out in Da Burgh or something with the yinz talk? :)

But I do agree-- 24 mph on a tight radius curve will be crazy. Try making a sharp right turn at an intersection on a downgrade doing 25 if you don't believe it.

^ Hehe, I'm multicultural... :)

The speeds on LoCoSuMo would probably provide a *fair* comparison...

Do NOT follow the advice above if there's snow or traffic, you might not get good results... ;)

...I tried it on the way to school today, theres a nice little downward "swoop curve" to the right off this one bridge. It was pretty fun, well for me anyway, probably not for the guy in front of me who thought I lost control :) There wasn't any snow either, it was spring-like weather in PA today, very comfy shorts and a tee shirt windows-down weather (not quite AC yet). *** Edited 2/21/2007 7:59:05 PM UTC by P18***
Last time I took a downhill turn at 25 MPH the bolts holding the cap on my truck bed let go and the cap fell off. NOT FUN!!!!

I have been watching the thread grow, but still have not seen mention of what I feel is the most important aspect of the ride. Are the trains on site/do we know what they are going to be like?

Real men ride wood... coasters that is!
^As you have said, they are a very important aspect and basically the most "mysterious" aspect as well. I'm sure if theres anything to know, it would be on here, especially with many who actually work on site as well as Fetterman himself posting on these forums.
