CP (almost) vanishes from Guiness Book of Records

According to the 2003 Guiness Book of World Records....

1) CP loses the record for most mechanical rides to Six Flags Great Adventure

2) CP split the record for most rollercoasters with SFMM

....but perhaps most critically, CP lost a lot of photo space in what has become a rather visual book. X gets much love (about a quarter-pages' worth), Dodonpa gets a little but it almost seems the Point pics have vanished this year.

Has anyone else seen the book yet? What impression did you get?

I have seen the book also, and the new coaster at Cedar Point will get a ton of press for the 2004 version of the book. Although they haven't "vanished" I think that they will regain the crown of most "mechanical" rides in one park and the most roller coasters in one park soon enough.

Dodonpa pic by yours truely! Gotta see that book....I forgot I sold that pic a long time ago

I quit reading the Guinness book when it switched to its current "coffee-table" size format.

I still have a book from 1986 that has maybe one B&W picture per page; the rest is jammed with statistics. There's three whole pages of top video-game scores, and four pages of food-eating records!

Now there's so many pictures, they've had to drop a ton of interesting records. Bleh.

btw, my 1986 book automatically opens to a photo of Moonsault Scramble. :)

The question is: how many of those SFGAdv mechanical rides operate at any given time? :) Don't think I've been to a park that consistantly has a minimum of SEVERAL flats closed at any given time.

True, Matt. Last time I visited there they had 2, count 'em, 2! flats open!

Actually I just saw the book today, and they ALMOST had a whole page Picture of X's 1/2 Twist

It's all in Twisted Wicker... Can't you see?!

Ok I am confused. I thought CP had the most rides of any park anywhere? So what's this mechanical ride stuff?

-Mikey

My overall response to this is "no biggie."

I think the park is still widely respected.

And besides, it still managed to capture more than a "few" Golden Ticket Awards. The GBOWW (or its coverage of amusement parks or rollercoasters) doesn't mean much to me.

Over half the big flat rides at SFGAdv were closed during my visit this summer....

Hey but if they let SFMM tie with CP for most coasters when one was closed half the year and another opens about once a year I guess they can let SFGAdv slide too? ;)

Well, there's always next year. That should settle the case about several records.

The "GBOWW" current coffee table version is just an example of how commercial the company has become. If I am not mistaken, the person/company claiming a record must pay a fee to have whatever it is judged. (Unless Guinness is seeking the record) The problem here, is that you must claim your record. If Park-A wants Guinness to say they have to tallest coaster at 100 feet they can. They just pay the fee to have a judge come and verify the height. If the coaster is taller than the previous record holder, viola. Now if Park-B wants their 150 foot coaster to be judged they would have to pay the fee. If the coaster is taller than the previous record holder, then Park-B would get the record.

Therefore, I propose to all of you, to take the GBOWW and shove it where the sun don't shine. Lets make our own coaster/park records and make them 100% accurate.

I'll admit it is rare but I was there once this season when only two were closed. Yes, two. Space Shuttle and Evolution. Jumpin Jack was actually running that day along with every other flat ride.

They really should be counting rides that have been opened for the season though. Evolution and SS never opened and a G-Force was on the map this season but was never re-assembled. Therefore, the book is probably wrong.

How many pages CP is featured in for me does not change my opinion of the park.

They could be out of the book all together and I would still love the place

Well at least this answers the question posed in this thread.

In this day and age, records are only made to be broken. So to me, they just don't mean very much anymore. SFMM gained the "most coasters" record for what...4 months? Millennium Force couldn't even open before that one was snatched away. Do people really think Cedar Point is the only park with a rocket coaster in the works?

What's to stop another mega-park from ordering a rocket coaster 5 ft higher two years or so from now?

Well put Matt! I was at SFGAdv a couple years ago, and it seemed like 1/2 the rides were closed. I had only been there one time before, around 1997. I was in NYC at the time, and just drove to Jersey to have a few rides. Both sides of Chiller were closed (which I had never rode before). There were a handful of new, cool-looking flat rides, they were all closed. Half of that WRETCHED woodie was closed. I can't even remember what else, but more rides were closed too. It's the least time I ever spent at a park, I left right about 1/2 past noon. Pathetic, huh!

PS-Medusa was new, rode it like 3 times with no wait. It was the only good thing about the place...

Millennium Force held the record for tallest and fastest full circuit coaster for about 3 months. Steel Dragon did not open until August 2000. Unless you're referring to the fact that Steel Dragon was known before MF opened...but we didn't know the final height until it opened and was measured. Morgan claimed 318, while Guinness measured it at 311' 8", just 9 inches taller than MF, at 310' 11".

Well, there's the cost of installation and the means to pay it off, among other things.

SF is in no position whatsoever to go on a limb with prototype coasters or $20 million-plus expenditures for single projects and probably won't for quite some time. The Stratosphere project was shot down even before Arrow went into bankruptcy court.

To be honest, I don't see anyone topping this new full-circuit height or speed record for quite some time.
