Concern for New Orleans, and fellow Buzzers

When Six Flags made that offer, I dont believe they expected 25,000 refugees to be shipped from the Superdome to the adjacent Astrodome. That's way more bodies than the park can entertain within a very short walking distance of the property.

Yeah, looks like they've thought better of this offer. Like I said, way more bodies than the park could accomodate.

MEDIA ALERT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 1, 2005

Six Flags AstroWorld and Six Flags SplashTown to Donate Money, Tickets to Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief

Six Flags AstroWorld and Six Flags SplashTown will donate $1 to the Red Cross hurricane relief effort from each paid admission during Labor Day weekend. The parks will also be offering the Astrodome housing organizers a block of complimentary tickets to distribute to evacuees at the organizers' discretion.

Yesterday's announcement that hurricane evacuees from the Superdome are being moved to the Astrodome necessitated the need to change an offer of free admission to all evacuees announced earlier this week.
Due to capacity constraints, officials felt the number of free admissions per day needed to be controlled.

"Our staff wanted to move quickly to do something for those impacted by the hurricane," said park general manager, Chuck Hendrix. "We
hope that contributing money to the Red Cross relief efforts will help those staying with us here in Houston return home soon."

Care to re-phrase that? ;)

Anyway, rightly or wrongly, stars can be more helpful than most people just by lending their name to a cause. If they get a little good PR from it, I wont begrudge them that. I think you all are being to hard on them.

How about donate the money raised from all of the concerts to hurricane disaster funds and give one wiz bang of a free show(s) for the disaster victims at a future date.

A day at the park is what you make it!

Wow.. I have missed the Buzz for the past week because I have been in training with my new employer in Chicago.

This Company sent 50 Medics to N.O. last night, and 60 more +20 ambulances are leaving tomorrow.

The majority of these 110 people have no specified return date. Maybe it is because I work for/with these people... but I respect them for their willingness to go where needed. And I respect the company for sending so many people...

Guess who's back? Back Again? James K's back. Tell a friend.

Peabody, I need to hear from you. Email me, or something. Call me from a hardwired line. I've been trying to call you regarding the wedding, but no luck, sadly. If New Orleans airport is out of commish, what happens then? It's a distinct possibility that I can't come, right? Where would you have the wedding?

HELP!

That's my original point-- celebs who lend their name to something and that's the extent. Why give them the credit for raising money?

BTW, in what part of the city/region is SFNO located? Obviously, from the pics, it's adjacent to the interstate. I couldn't find it anywhere on the National G atlas I have. It's one of the few parks I looked for that isn't shown.

SFNO is at the intersection of I-10 and I-510, and is located in the southeast quadrant of that intersection.

Frontrider

Thanks, Frontrider.
I just watched the news, and they are shipping 400 New Orleans residents to Washington, DC. Bad Idea.... It is very expensive to live in DC area alone. I thought they will be better off in another southern state where is a bit cheaper. Though I think some will survive, most probably won't.

When my pastor moved from Philly to DC and wanted to buy a house in the district, he couldn't because the town houses in DC are double the price than Philly. There for right now he is stuck with a small town house. And yes houses and apartments in DC, MD, VA can be very expensive. I have relatives that come here sometimes from other cities and see how high our living standards are.

DC already have basically the most homeless people than any other city in the USA. Lord knows we don't need anymore. Regardless, New Orleans will be welcomed with opened arms. *** Edited 9/3/2005 3:45:56 AM UTC by SF Critic***

Talked to him earlier today. Kept losing cell coverage.... :( The wedding is on, they're safe, and driving back "home," wherever that is......

Past that, I'm not participating, as I can't fly in. That sucks.

Jeff, and Lauren are safe, and together, and that's what's most important.

Well, you could always fly to WV and I'll drive you down, Rob ;).

Glad that they're okay, and together, and everything is still on.

Wow... the area that has problems is 234000 square km in size - about as big as Britain.
I still can't even begin to imagine what kind of monster storm that must have been.
They are now talking up to 10000 deaths - and around 300000 people in a life-endangering situation at the moment.
i live in houston TX and it is horrible haveing so meany people hear, i was on my to Astroworld today and the line to get in was long cuz its free to the new orleans people and i said no way cuz so meany people there i mean i never seen so meay people in astroworld before,

Go on your honeymoon, Jeff. :-) You guys deserve it. As far as getting married I don't know what your plans are right now but just do it. I support you guys all the way, no matter what you decide to do. :-)

Refering to Jeret? Yeah, thats pretty selfcentered of him to say that. He should be more then happy to accept these people into his city, as I am for Austin (alhough we arn't taking in as many as San Antonio, and Dallas)
I thought the park was closed this w/e anyway.
Boo Hoo, jaret. I feel so bad for you having to deal with so many people. I'm very sorry to hear that the disaster has affetcted you in such an inconvenient way.

Every night when I watch the news, I feel so bad for all of those displaced and emotionaly distroyed people, that I cry a little and then say a small prayer. Their problems are way worse than yours. I hope you get to ride your rollie coasters real soon, I really do, but try to be a little more compassionate.

They are people, you know, people?

What happens now is also very interesting:
It's the answer to a lot of "what if" questions, so I guess it's a very valuable lesson to watch as closely as we can.
Would people give each other a helping hand? How far would abandon their normals lives to help those in need?
Will racial issues play a role (would white middle class families open their house to black people?) Would anyone open their house at all?
What kind of indications would people use to trust each other in this situation?
Would the Oil companies use the catastrophy to raise gas prices?
How does the government react (aid? concern about high oil price?) *** Edited 9/4/2005 7:34:40 AM UTC by superman***
