By the way, if you didn't see it, I'm donating all CoasterBuzz Club membership dues between now and Saturday to the Red Cross. See the pinned thread.

One of the radio stations here in Charleston, WV are doing just that. So far they have about 8 trucks full of water, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, etc. I just dropped off a case of water to them.
The support is just overwhelming, and local business have donated money and supplies as well.
Even if you donate a bottle of bleach, some cans of food, money that you were otherwise going to spend on a night out......anything! It will make a world of difference to these people.

As for the New Orleans Saints, I think that is the last group of athletes that should be giving money. The flood waters destroyed their banks/houses just as much as the people in the inner city. The difference is that they could afford to evacuate. I'm sure athletes for the Saints are giving some money, but they are extremely effected themselves.
Yeah, Brit is from Kentwood Louisiana (only about an hour away from New Orleans), and I'm sure she has already written a large check. I only know that because my mom grew up there.
Any concerts are only welcomed in my opinion as money needs to be raised.

They are talking about how the gangs are taking over. There were rapes, shootings, fights......can you imagine that place overnight with no power?
Very disturbing.

This is a coaster with steel supports, I doubt it's really a lost cause. Some of the track may need replacing but overall the structure was designed to withstand a flood.
How messed up would that be for a city to just disappear?
She is fine. She was relieved from the hospital after 4 solid days and is here with us now. We might all try returning home tomorrow. We have water (boil order, naturally), and natural gas. Power might take 2 weeks to restore. But, how long can we all afford to live in hotels, you know? It sure adds up. Sure there are shelters, but they are hell holes. We just bought a whole car load of non-perishables at a Sams, and are heading back. THankfully our area is so minor compared to the city, slidell, GUlfport, and all things east.
Our concerns are just how to live. The banks are closed...other than credit cards, how does one live? We are going to have to drive to Baton Rouge or something to get groceries, gas, etc. Insanity.
Will keep you all posted.
I haven't broken this to Nasai yet, who is a groomsman in my wedding which is supposed to be the 24th....who knows what is goign to happen with that. We're going to get married one way or another, I'm not sure how much of a wedding we can even have!

I read that some of them were shooting at the Coast Guard helicopters that were flying around trying to rescue people from rooftops, and people trying to bring in aid supplies. How warped is that?
It's gotten so bad, they suspended the evacuation from the Superdome. I guess they're afraid armed gangs will actually commandeer the buses.
Why not get married in Coeur D'Alene? ;)

My thoughts and prayers are with you guys, as always. Glad to hear she's back with you safe and sound.
RGB,
Yeah I heard about that. Absolutely scary.

Sounds like a scene from Batman Begins. New Orleans has become Gotham City where the criminal mind rules. Sad... Something tells me they aren't going to be so brazen when National Guard troops start showing up. *** Edited 9/1/2005 8:54:45 PM UTC by coasterguts***

An interesting choice of words.
Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

I loathe the concept of celebrity "charity." In my opinion, it's totally bogus. While it's nice to have concerts, celebrity auctions, etc., to raise money for this or that charity, all of that money actually comes from regular people who make donations or pay for autographs or memorabilia from celebrities. None of it comes from the celebrities themselves, yet in the process they get tons of publicity. Why don't they pony up and write a check themselves? Where's the New Orleans Saints? The lowest paid of them is still making hundreds of thousands a year. Not to mention management and owners. Their combined income probably exceeds that of everyone who was evacuated to the Superdome.
What about the Mannings and Brett Favre (although I understand several of his family members lost their own homes)? Isn't Britney Spears originally from LA? I'm sure there are dozens of people in the entertainment industry from the affected states. How about autographing a check?
Maybe I'm just a grouch, but I think these people could do more than walk out and sing a song from their next album (which by the way is on sale at...) or autograph a football in exchange for cash. And they can certainly do more than say "Hi, I'm a celebrity... send money."
RGB, I agree with you. If they want to do something like this, don't do it on National TV, put a tour together, tour cities, charge $25 for tickets. By doing it on T.V. your giving away something for free that others will be pay to see live. Donate a month of your time, tour the major cities, finish with a free concert for those affected by the storm and donate 100% of the money to disaster relief. If they would play concerts in the top 10 stadiums in the country that can hold 60000 people or more and each concert sold out they could raise $15 mil. Just a thought.

Hey! That's where me and Lady T are going!
Actually, some of her family from NO is staying with other family in VA and joked that we should move the date up a month since so many of them are up here. The sad thing is, come October, they'll probably *still* be up here... *** Edited 9/1/2005 9:11:09 PM UTC by 2Hostyl***

Care to re-phrase that? ;)
Anyway, rightly or wrongly, stars can be more helpful than most people just by lending their name to a cause. If they get a little good PR from it, I wont begrudge them that. I think you all are being to hard on them.
