Cedar Point announces Top Thrill Dragster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Cedar Point announced this morning Top Thrill Dragster, the tallest, fastest roller coaster in the world. The Intamin "rocket coaster," which has been under construction for months, is 420 feet tall and launches riders 120 mph in four seconds.

Does it get any better than this?

The nay-sayers are all silenced....and a few of them are even like "wow, maybe it IS cool"

Can't wait for media day (I'm scared!)

Does the launch happen out of the station or does the train advance out to the launch staging area?

You must be this dumb to ride Viper. -SFGAdv.

You must have bit rdden X then.........Still the best coaster on the planet, but maybe things will change now.

Scream will be no competition (literally and figuratively) for Dragster. All scream is is another B&M clone, same thing as Medusa or Superman, only made to fit into the space. Nothing new and innovative (even Dragster has made a few innovations since Xcelerator, such as an advanced PLC for 6 trains (probably much alike to Screamin's at DCA), new train design with more theming (this was supposed to go onto Xcelerator), and the hydraulic launch is pretty innovative itself).

Cedar Point could have built 2 coasters for $25 million, but they didn't. That shows some class. Or they could have spread the wealth to dorney park, and both could have gotten Xcelerator clones for 13 million (probably raised to 14 million), but they would have been clones, and CF doesn't really like clones all too much (but they still do with like the S&S towers, WT &SV)..

Unbelievable! That's pretty much sums it up for me. The road trip to Cedar Point in May definately will be happening for me now. I was a little skeptical at first about achieving the record in this manner, but now I really don't care. It looks absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to experience that launch. Thank you Cedar Point!!!
Looks like the Cedar Point website is down. 9:53 AM, CST.

Glad to see it finally announced, looks like fun. I look forward to riding it in 2004 or 2005, whenever I get around to visiting CP again. Perhaps when they add #17.

I do have concerns about downtime as well. Xcelerator goes down a lot, mostly due to computer sensor problems. On every single visit to Knotts since the coaster opened [at least 12 visits] its experienced major downtime, and on three of my last four visits the ride shut down around 3pm and never reopened before park closing. If the computer can't handle the location of 2 trains on 2,200 feet of track how will it handle where 5-6 trains are on 2,800 feet of track?

Oh...and I had no problem accessing the website at 8am PST.

Sig under construction!

Those have to be the most insane trains I've ever seen.

For the sake of yourself, don't take anything I say seriously.

The question is: Will it be the best coaster in the park? I'm sure we'll have some interesting opinions come May.

CEDAR POINT THEMED A ROLLER COASTER!!!!! LOL
It's great to have a themed roller coaster at the Point. I really like those trains!!

It looks like the station can hold 3 trains all for loading and unloading at the same time. Or one spot for unloading and the other two for loading. 1 at the start. 1 at the brake run by the powerhouse. And one inbetween the powerhouse and the station.

Another note:
Anyone else notice what looks to be some sort of lighting package all the way up the tower in the animation? It looks to be Giant Spot Lights pointed outward? I wonder what the night time package will look like? With the way the lights are positioned on the tower it looks to be a Dragster Style Light (red yellow and green maybe lighting up/down the tower). Time will tell... :)

Is it just me, or did anyone else have "Jesus Built My Hotrod" by Ministry running through their brains when they viewed the ride animation. (Drag Racing! Drag Racing!)

This is absolutely incredible!

The only thing I was planning on doing early this season was attending CoasterbuzzCon at SFGam to test out the S:UF clone... After checking out the stats & those amazing trains, I've absolutely got to ride this thing as soon as possible. It looks like a additional May road trip is in order. I'm hoping visiting on a Monday or Tuesday will help make the lines somewhat tolerable. I went on Monday in May in 2000 for Millie, and I only waited a 90minutes.

Congrats Cedar Point...

The six trains look like they are going to be used to try to give the illusion that the ride is longer than it acutally is by keeping riders on it longer. In other words, load, advance, wait, advance, wait, launch. I guess its not stacking if they are in line to launch :)

Interesting observation here. I was looking at the wallpapers on the site for TTD and the one I chose was the from the ground perspective and I noticed that one of the riders has their hands up. Isnt that a Cedar Fair no-no for their advertising? If this is anything like Hypersonic, wouldnt it be less than safe to have your hands up during the launch?

Great ride though, cannot wait to ride this thing. I am shaking in my boots already!

Sweet! I can't wait. I'm DEFFINATELY going to CP next year. Can't wait!

The only thing is, I don't think the trains will look like that. Wheels on the back? Eh, no. They do look awesome, but until I see real pictures, I don't think they'll be like that.

There is some speculation, RollerCoasterGod, that the tower will be a giant light tree, with red, yellow and green lights on the tower synchronized with the launch.

To all of you having trouble getting on to the CP website... I've got media CD and you don't!!! :-P~

Oh yeah baby! Can't wake to go their this summer!

I was one that wasn't happy at being put off for this long on knowing the details of this ride. Cedar Point worked this "mystery ride" concept far too long for my liking. That being said, their strategy insures that no other park in the world will be able to touch the height or the speed of this coaster for at least two years. Even if the city of Las Vegas reconsiders the hook for the Stratisphere, I don't think that it could be in place in less than that time.

What we are seeing here today gentlemen is the start of a new era in rollercoasters. If CP can keep this ride operating most of the time, they will break all sorts of attendance records.

Opening day they should have a real dragster lead the crowd to the coaster. Of course, having seen the crowd run to Millie I'm not sure the dragster will be able to keep up!
