Cedar Point announces Siren's Curse tilt roller coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the official Cedar Point site:

The legend and lore of mysterious creatures living beneath the surface of Lake Erie comes to life with Siren's Curse, North America’s TALLEST, LONGEST & FASTEST tilt coaster.

Often spoken of – but never spotted, the sirens of the lake who lured sailors to their underwater demise with their sweet, seductive songs will finally rise to the land above Cedar Point and attempt to entrap you in a sinister two-minute fate of non-stop roller coaster innovation.

The roller coaster will be 160 feet tall and reach a speed of 58 mph.

I was completely unaware! I suppose when none of these have been built, assumed a custom layout.

I stand corrected!

I'm not buying the distract from TT2 theory. I would be very surprised if that ride is not ready to roll by May of 2025. Roller coasters are not rocket surgery.

SteveWoA:

It's also very nicely fit into the land it occupies.

I don't think it fits well at all. It looks like someone took a pre-built RCT coaster and rotated it until all the squares were green and plopped it down. There seems to be a substantial amount of land on either side of the ride that goes unused, or could have been better used for infield stuff if the ride was custom.

Agreed. TT2 being SBNO isn't ideal, but does it justify many millions of dollars in cap ex?

Never mind that TT2 will almost certainly be ready to open for next season. (If it doesn't Zamperla is going to have hell to pay.)

Assuming the speculation that the coaster was moved from Six Flags Mexico, I am trying to think of the business reasons for doing so. Selfishly, I'm super excited, since CP is pretty close to me. But CP just got a major investment in TT2, will presumably get a replacement for the water slides and Snake River Falls soon, and has had a pretty steady stream of capex up to this point. Surely with the combined CF and SF parks there's a park more deserving of a major new attraction, right? This could really move the needle at a smaller park, whereas at CP I'm not sure it will have a huge impact given that TT2 is basically a brand new ride next year.

Cool name and awesome story! It’s the red and gray track that are a big head scratcher. Was the marketing department aware the coaster’s colors before the video was released? The name and story seem inspired by the Sirens in Odyssey. Don’t know how many guests know of this classic seafaring story. Regardless of the colors, I am still going to ride it. I had to endure Superman colors on SFOT’s Mr. Freeze for years. I am predicting a name change (ie. Banshee). Hopefully it wouldn’t be renamed to Harvey Quinn’s Crazy Coaster or another DC name.

The complaints about the colors remind me of the complaints about TTD's original theme. "F1 cars don't go vertical!"

It can't have anything to do with water if it's not blue!

I agree red is a little overdone at CP, but other than that...who cares?

100% agree! When was the last coaster the new company opened at the beginning of the season? Also, it appears Siren’s Curse was destined for Six Flags Mexico. The ride joins Georgia Surfer and SFOT’s Aquaman; coasters earmarked for another park. Both rides were delayed, especially with Aquaman. Granted these rides were prototypes.

I have some limited experience with large construction projects and I would have a hard time believing that something like this has only been in the works for a few months unless by "2025" they mean pretty late in the year.

Do I actually care about the color scheme? No.

Am I looking for something, anything, to complain about in response to a new coaster announcement at my favorite park, because it is my duty as a coaster enthusiast to do so? Maybe. Probably.

Seriously though, I think it is a fair thing to at least comment on. After all, somebody in charge cares about the color scheme, otherwise the rides would all look the same. The color palette is part of the amusement park experience, part of the sensory stimulation just like the sounds and smells are. It's the whole package. Why bother putting lights on the trains? Why bother having the supports painted a different color than the track? Decisions are made that impact nothing more than the visual appeal of the ride, and I think those decision makers are right to care about those things. Whether the decisions are based on vibrancy, clashing with nearby rides, or fitting the ride's theme, I think it's all relevant.

Regarding the theme, I do not regard Cedar Point as a theme park (I don't think it regards itself as that either). However, starting with Dragster, they've at least tried to apply a light dusting of theming elements to their coaster installations. So if that's the new standard they have set for themselves, then I think it's fair criticism to notice that the new attraction is a bit lacking in harmony between the colors and the ride's theme.

Lastly, I'll say that when I was kid, I first fell in love with roller coasters by watching them, way before I was brave enough to ride them. Something about those big machines with crazy, twisty elements and cars full of screaming riders smoothly rolling along really captured my imagination. The visually striking nature of a big roller coaster is a unique, special thing. A strong color scheme has the chance to make it even more special.

So yeah, I care very much about the colors, and if this thing isn't painted with something better by opening day, then CP will be receiving a very strongly worded letter from me. ;)

The red is the blood in the water after the sirens rip the sailors to shreds. Problem solved.

Hahahaha. Will most customers even care about the corny theme and backstory????

DS:

I do wonder if this will be modified to support a third train, as I find it hard to believe that Cedar Point would open a new coaster with only two trains.

Considering Six Flags operates all of their coasters with one train, maybe they are averaging out?

I think this question is only being asked because we're talking about Cedar Point, and Cedar Point is not a theme park. Fair. But you wouldn't ask this about BGW, or SDC, or Europa Park, etc. etc. Those parks invest heavily in their theming, and they don't do it because they like setting money on fire.

Siren's Curse is themed to a shipping crane tower. I suppose there are red crane shipping towers out there.

See? Red. With some gray.

Actually I kind of get it. You're climbing the crane tower and it tips over sending you flying as you "escape". I guess if you're imagining the layout after the drop as "water" then red seems odd down there, but I think red/gray fits fine for a crane. And the tower upon which it sits.

If I was king, we would put some foggy fog below the drop and have the rest of the track a different murky color.

And more fog in the short underground section.

Well whadaya know? Here I am complaining and I didn't even read the full description on CP's site. I am dumb.

I don’t know anything about Mexico or what their plans were but I can make a case for this ride not being a custom number for CP. It does appear to have that RCT dropped-in look, but the main, scary feature needed to be on the midway side. And consequently the station is in a strange spot, with desolate looking queues (by the train tracks?) approaching and exiting. A custom job would have situated the station differently, with access and visibility better thought out. The drop would’ve faced the right direction. Whoever pointed out the empty spaces in the neighborhood are correct- something about the placement and the re-route of the road just seem off.
But the thing that speaks the loudest is the little underground dip. I’ve been around a long time and I can’t remember many times when they dug into the ground for a ride. Blue Streak might dig in a little, wooden coaster style. Even rides that would normally have strong topographical features like Mine Ride carry the riders mostly above ground level. That mile-long pathway crosses over it bridge-style so that will make a nice feature for those that are waiting, and clearly not for non-riders. And it’s a cement vault so it would take a lot of ground water to move it. The worst part of that is the construction, and deep digs like Space Spiral and Windseeker present challenges. This won’t be that bad.
I looked at the empty-ish patio when I was at the park a few weeks ago. I imagined a huge flat taking that location, namely one of those huge Mondial flipping swing things like CW put in this year. (Tundra Twister)
I guess not. If there’s one more shred of evidence it’s how fast this popped up, literally without a single word or warning. The Announcement that Nobody Saw Coming.

Good point. Which then makes me wonder why they even came up with a corny video and backstory in the first place?

But even six flags started doing this in recent years. Like on Dr Diobalical drop coaster.

Pfft. I only ride roller coasters with colors I like and stories that are intriguing.

Rollercoaster 1 looks too red for me.
