Can restraints ever unlock during ride?

On Batman at SFStL, they stopped letting people on the ride and started sending empty trains out, so I asked one person coming out of the exit why and they said that the restraints kept popping open. I don't know if it was the safety bely, or the actual restraint, nor if it was the rider's fault or not (because you can un-buckle the belts at ANY time during the ride).
"...ANY time during the ride" not much happens. I don't think they are desined to bring the train to a halt, think about it, it could halt in the middle of an inversion.

Oh, and they can fail. If it is a macine, it will break, no matter how well maintained it is, it will eventually break.

I've heard a few stories, my mom always tells me to" make sure and check my seatbelt"

Hmm, I don't think that's necessary true. To say that every machine is going to break is a big overstatement, good maintenance prevents that. Especially with all the safety backups dealing with roller coasters.

happened to me on ST at SFWoA, the restraint just popped up on the lift, but the seatbelt held it right. I manually had it pulled tight the whole ride. However something must've made it work again because after the "sea serpent" it came back it was down again, i still hold on whenever i ride it.

Most OTSR's have a seatbelt connecting the restraint to a spot between your legs so even if the restraint were to unlock you would still stay in the seat.
Dragon Khan and Kumba do nothave safety belts, it makes me a little nervous, I have ridden Khan over 60 times, and like to leave the restraint open a little bit to maximise the floating effect before the brake fun. I hope they havent had any incidents on these two rides1
I have had three incidents.

Twice on Serial Thriller @ SFWoA (and both on the same day nonetheless) where going down the first drop, the restraint just clicked up a notch or two, just enough to notice it and put that adrenaline rush in. They clicked right back down.

The third, the biggie, was Mantis @ CP. On the turn before the first drop, the restraint came open (not a notch or two, but OPEN) Fortunately, it was after they installed the belts. I clicked it down, and a few seconds later it re-locked.

RideMan knows the reason for this. Go ahead, explain! ;)
Ive actually had that happen to me on the Beast. All i did was hold on as tight as i could. It was on the turn to the lift, it just lifted up. they stopped the train at the top, and i thought they were coming to get us, but the ride went anyway. I just basically doubled over it and prayed to God that this was my lucky day.

I went on Kumba in March, and while they don't have belts on all the seats, they do have them on certain seats. I don't know about Dragon Khan, though.

On Viper @ SFGAm right as we went over the first drop, my friends lap bar flew right up. He pushed it down immediately and it locked, but it was still a pretty stressful and exciting situation :)
It's more like the lapbars will pop up a notch rather than coming open. I have never witnessed a lap bar flying open during a ride. I guess anything is possible but not very likely.

Last year i was like the front of the line before the park opened, and this kid was talking to me and my bro, and these other two guys, and he was trying to tell us that on the lift hill of batman, at SFGAm, the restraint flew open and he was hanging from it the whole ride. wow. what a stroy, oh yeah, and he told us that a bunch of the ops at giant drop thought he was really annoying, (true):) so they sent him up on what he counted as 120 times alone, during a open season day. Wow, some people just don't know when to stop. Oh yeah, but seriously on american eagle on the hill, i like tried to lean up to see over the side, and it kind of came off. then i snapped it back down. I was pretty scared. But those other two stories... man, actually he was kind of fun to listen to, as long as you can hold in laughter.

If a restraint came open on me on a lift hill I wouldn't bother closing it. I'd jump to the stariway on the side. Hey it would have been safer and cool standing way up high.

I've never had the restraint fly open on me but when i was on the big shot in Las Vegas the restraint didn't lock. I tried pulling it in but it still didn't work. they were just about to launch us too so i shouted at one of the ride-ops and luckily he stopped the guy setting us going. They still couldn't get it to lock so i was taken off and put on the next go, and as far as i know, no one else went in that seat for the rest of the day. Anyway its still a pretty good ride but that scared the **** outta me.
V2 friend, that is true, its happened to me. One thing it, when working there, the maitn, they dont even wear them. So, I guess either way, you wont fall out.
Sorry, I meant, one thing is. And another ride for me, which isnt A coaster, but the Powerdive at SFGAM, the whole row, we were pretty much through the ride, it was embarrassing, they had to stop the ride.
If the computer can catch when a restraint comes open, how come it will stop the train at the next set of brakes? I would think that the sudden stop at an unexpected brake run would throw a rider without restraints out of the car rather than protect them.
