A Thought Why Ad Revenues are Down

You miss the point entirely. My choice has nothing to do with it. If I don't recover my costs, it will go away. No matter how much I enjoy running the site, I'm not a charity. The whole point in the first place is that if I can't pay the bills, the site will go away.

And you do benefit from the site... you've made hundreds of posts and who knows how many visits. If it wasn't worth something to you, you wouldn't come back.

It is worth something to me. I just don't think its worth it to pay $20 for something I don't need.

Instead I'll allow pop ups on the site. That's my way of doing it. If I never came to this site, I'm sure it would still be here anyway.

I'll let pop ups on this site, thats my way of contributing. I'm sorry if that dissappoints you.

I don't buy the "I don't have $20" stories. Especially $20 a year. How much money do you spend at McDonalds etc. each month? I bet it's at least $20. Go mow a lawn. 60 minutes of work once to help ensure something you use 60 minutes a week (probably much much more). If you (or your parents) can afford a PC and an ISP, $20 a year is nothing. Don't try the "my parents won't give me $20" line either. Have you even actually asked? And not just "hey mom, give me 20 bucks", a little justification goes a long way. Use some humor. "Gee Dad, for $20 a year I will spend more time on the computer, and less time spanking the monkey/spending your money at the mall/etc."
The data's been provided by Jeff before (and above) $1200/month for access alone. That doesn't include hardware, software, power, and admin time. Do the math. $14,400 a year. 720 members, just to cover access.

Just to put in perspective, it costs me $20 to visit CBuzz 3 or 4 hours a week, for a year. It costs $8 for one 2 hour movie. Spend the same time in a theater, it would cost over $800.

Wow CoasterDad, I never looked at it like that before. The cost comparison is really good. I personally am a CBuzz Club member (and I have already renewed) and I am happy to help Jeff run this site. Actually if I had the extra money I would give more money to the site as a donation, but I dont have the extra.

I too do not buy the whole "I can't afford $20" crap either. Truthfully I can't afford it either (I am still paying for my college education and some expensive medical bills along with my monthly regular bills) but yet I still pass it on over to Jeff for the site. If you cant pass on $20 a year then I feel very sorry for you.

I find Ride of Steel's signature ironic.

I think you could up the yearly membership fee and not lose out on it. I would gladly renue my CB membership for $25 or $30, especially with all the new events.

But thats just me, and no, I don't have anything brown on my nose.

I can kind of see where "ride of steel" is coming from.

Me myself personally would love to be a CBuzz member, but i live in Rochester,NY and a lot of events are in the Midwest about 7 or 8 hrs from where I'am from.

I usually make at least one or two trips to Cedar Point a year and I try to get to SFGAM but I'am not that close to these parks that i can go to them as frequent as some other folks can that visit on this site.

From my understanding there are no events on the east coast for Cbuzz members. If there was at least like a event at maybe Kennywood,SFGADV,SFDL,Knoebels,PCW I would see more of a reason to join the club so that i could meet other CBuzzers.

But that isn't the case, not to take away from the site or Jeff but Ride of steel's opinion is a valid point.

If anyone can give me some good reason's other than what was already sttd to be a CBuzz member other than the site and the wonderful posts, I promise you i will grab my Credit Card and i will become a CBuzz member right now.

Until then i will continue to lurk and accept pop-up ads.

As long as you accept the pop-ups and not block them, nobody would have a problem with you not joining the club. It is the people who don't join the club AND use pop-up blockers that Jeff and others have an issue with.

Ugh... it's not about the events. The events are a nice excuse to get together and meet. The membership is, and always has been, primarily about supporting the site.

Just curious Jeff... will it ever get to the point where you'd put advertising on the members site? I know many other sites, such as IGN.com, are forced to.

It won't ever happen on ACN, and I doubt it'll ever happen here. I'm just wondering what Jeff's thoughts are about it.

There isn't enough to bother. IGN is different... that's highly targeted stuff there and they have their own sales force. I think Gamespot does it as well. (I love that site by the way.)

I know that both Six Flags and Cedar Fair have campaigns set to run later this year, so hopefully the CPMs of those will be decent.

Hey Jeff...

Have you ever thought of using this:
http://www.antiadblocker.com/

From what the website states, it's free, and will get beyond over 30 known pop-up stoppers. If revenues are low, and are in partial loss to the fact that people use these popup stoppers, have you ever thought of looking into that as an alternative?

Jeff, is there any way we can help contribute to CoasterBuzz besides the CBClub? I will gladly contribute what I can to the site.

Sorry to bring this back to the front but felt my comment does not deserve a topic of it's own. Jeff, have you considered an affiliate program? Something like Amazon. I am a amazon affiliate, but you cannot earn the credit through your own sites. I always look for affiliate links on sites I routinely visit to try and purchase through them to help the site out a little. I know all to well the current advertising slump.

Just a thought...

Affiliate programs are a waste of time do little other than give free advertising to Amazon.

Jeff I am just wondering, but do you consider that Microsoft and Apple are stealing from you? The reason why is because MSN's new software and the browser that comes with Jaguar both don't allow any pop-ups (regardless of if the user want them off). Also, when you watch TV, do you watch ALL of the comercials for every show that you watch? Because under your logic if you don't then you are doing exactly what you clam those with pop-up blockers are doing to you.
