A Thought Why Ad Revenues are Down

I was wondering if the reason that ad revenues are down is due to a higher number of people in the Coasterbuzz Club who aren't viewing the ads, and therefore the pay per view/click wouldn't bring as much money before because less people are seeing it.

Does anyone see where I'm coming from? Or is the ad scheme that Jeff uses completely different then what I described?

Also alot of people are getting the pop up blocker....

Im the #1 Canobie Lake Park Fan!!!These are my top 3 coasters:
1. S:RoS @ SFNE 2. Yankee Cannonball 3. Cyclone/B:TDK

Ad revenues are down all over the industry, not just coaster sites. The days of dotcoms making a profit are just about gone. Only a select few have made it and they aren't relying on ad revenue (news paid subscriptions, Ebay: commisions, Yahoo offering the SCB Yahoo DSL, etc).

The profit is gone.

does anyone else have the firewall enabled that is incorporated within Windows XP Pro?? Since ive turned this on, ive yet to recieve popup windows from any site and I am not running any popup stopper software or blocking any sites under my security settings.

It has nothing to do with anything other than the ad companies aren't/can't sell ads. How many pop-ups have you seen lately? Even they're in the toilet.

Trust me, if there were enough members to force ad revenue down, I'd quit my job.

Makes sense that the ad companies are having a heck of a time selling ads. I mean if you're a company and you are planning on spending your money on advertising putting ads up on a site that isn't tied in with your product doesn't make much sense.

Personally, I've always thought that'd it make more sense for people from parks, rent a car places, and other businesses that deal with enthusiasts to focus ad money toward a site like this. The problem, I'm guessing is that there either most places that deal with enthusiasts as their fan base don't know about the site, or that they aren't making enough money to afford the advertising.

You could always use those flash ads, if you really need to. I heard they drive in quite a revenue.

No, what doesn't make sense is that advertisers measure the success of online campaigns differently than any other form of media, and hold little regard for good old-fashioned branding.

I see what you're saying, have you thought of alternative ways to bring in money besides the Club? Has the hosting business dried up?

Seriously, Jeff. There's no click count for TV commercials... Personally I think a company would be smart to subsidize a website simply to have it's logo placed unobtrusively onto it, forcing brand name recognition...

JoNo, Unfortunately since the dot com's started bombing; businesses have (unwisely) started pulling out of the net like it had some sort of virus. So, the real question will be which companies pull their heads out of their proverbial ass first.

However, that still doesn't solve the financial situation that Jeff finds himself in, which makes me wonder if other avenues of revenue are possible and what those avenues might be.

I stopped taking new hosting customers after CCI went bankrupt. I'll never see a dime of that money.

Internet advertising isn't bad, per se, but until soda, beer, auto and cereal companies start embracing it, there won't be a lot of money out there to be had.

Oh great, then we whould have the "Frito-Lay CoasterBuzz" or other such nonsense like the college bowl games...

Agreed jeremy....plus, it kinda killed all of Spurrier's jokes about *can't spell Citrus without UT*...:) I really miss him, I hope the Redskins fans appreciate what a great QUOTE they got....makes for a MUCH more interesting read through the sports pages, huh...;)

But as far as ad revenues....just look to the thread below....to raise revenue, go back to the web's beginnings...without porn, the geeks who started this whole thing would've *stuck* to magazines...;). Does this mean that I want to see the Hustler 'buzz? No...but it *would* likely be more profitable...

or how about the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl

As much as I love the site I generally use the pop up stopper. Why pay for something that you can get for free?

I'm sorry I feel this way but If Coasterbuzz wants to spend thousands of dollars on a server and offers a free service I'll take that. Its the same content and If I don't want ads I'll just use the pop up stopper. If you want to close the site because you are not making money than so be it.

Does CB charge for hosting like for instance sfwoa.coasterbuzz.com

Ride of Steel,

What you are doing is stealing $$ from Jeff's pockets by using pop-up blockers.

If you don't want to pay to be a club member and see the site without ads or pop-ups, then that is how sites like this (and many others) make a few bucks to help offset the costs of keeping a site running.

There was, at one point, a post that Jeff detailed the costs incurred to run/host this site and I cannot find it right now, but be assured, he is NOT making money on this. The cost of the T1 to host this site is around $1,000 a month (if not more).

Personally, if I ran a site like this, I'd try to come up with a way to block the users who have pop-up blockers....

And personally, the software to block people using blockers already exists, and I've thought about using it.

The T-1 costs $1,200/month. Last month's ad revenue was $500. You do the math.

Just so you know I've been on this site a long enough time to the point where all my closing of pop ups would have equaled way more than $20.

I would agree with you if I just came on in and used the pop up stopper.

I don't have the money to spend on the club and I'm sorry and as much as I like the site none of the benefits are that usefull to me, which is not Jeff's fault or anybody elses. I live and new york and can't drive so that would prevent me from going anywhere in ohio to use discount tickets, go to events, etc.

When I get older I'd love to join the club but right now it isn't going to happen.

I realize I should support the site but don't you only get money if you actually click the link?

I'll take the stopper off for this site but it is no one elses business whether I use it or not.

Also Jeff I thank you for the work you do for this site BUT was your choice to do this and if the bill is so high than just shut the site down or require anyone to pay and get rid of the free service.

If its free I take advantage of it and I'm sorry. But I will take the pop up stopper off because I will try to support the site and there aren't that many on the site anyway.

Lata,

Dan
