I just noticed auxiliary supports were added to the back of the tower. When and why?

It may be necessary to control where it goes down

ApolloAndy,

The extra supports were added for the drop ride Zuminjaro: Drop of Doom, around 2013/2014.

Wow, that thing is over 2X bigger than Son Of Beast. It's gonna be loud! I'm hoping they make it an event, and have top notch recording equipment.

They really should. *Come see the demolition of Kingda Ka! Only $99.99!*

Counting down the days until I'm back at Cedar Point, the one and only place to be.

And for an extra $100, you can stand in the VIP section.

That's actually a great idea to have an upcharge event for the implosion. Proceeds could go toward a charity.

Nothing really new, but NJ.com points out that demo is well underway. This photo on Twitter shows they've not exactly been gentle about pulling bits down on the ground.

Sounds like what's left of the ride is coming down tomorrow morning.

Apparently Kingda Ka is gonna go down faster than the Chiefs at the Super Bowl.

Are you MAN ENOUGH to ride this ride ?

Not making it easy on Michigan's Adventure in terms of reassembly.

This is really satisfying. And it broke apart into so many pieces!

I wonder if there would have been a lot of work to loosen things in order for that to happen, or does that happen just by virtue of the impact ?

Maybe there was good reason as to why they had to do it - but I am curious if a TT2 renovation was ever in the mix of what they could have done. The cost of demolition (somewhere around $1.5 - 2m) and clear up alone feels crazy. Or maybe the pains of the TT2 renovation did for anything of that nature ? It just seems odd not to use such an iconic structure that's less than 20 years old if you could. Who knows ... Not me =).

I'm sure glad I never had to look after it or sign off on it, but it was a great ride.

The inevitable collective disappointment of what comes next vs. Ka feels inevitable.

I wonder if they looked into it and the structure had more wear on it from the drop tower addition? would make sense to me

It just fell apart like an erector set!

RE: TT2 renno. There's a lot less risk in demoing at Six Flags compared to Cedar Point which could have been an influence as well.

Was it on its original hydraulic drive?

When I was in Park Ops at CP, and worked at Dragster a few times, I asked what the maintenance budget was roughly to the main tech, and in 2004 money it was hefty.

Also my two times at SF the past two years-it never had a line more then 15 min or so when it was up.

If Nitro was imploded different story…

I also find it funny they whacked Cyborg to hoping no one would notice.
