Casino Pier adding new ride called Super Storm, some people not amused

Posted Thursday, May 16, 2013 1:35 PM | Contributed by Jeff

As crews tore down a landmark roller coaster damaged by superstorm Sandy, officials announced a new thrill ride for Casino Pier with a potentially provocative name: Super Storm. The new ride is slated to be ready for beachgoers this summer, officials said, less than a year after the shoreline was severely damaged by the Oct. 29 storm.

Wow, missed that thread entirely. I wondered where he went. The More You Know.

On topic, this reminds me a bit about the S&S Combo Tower at Mirabilandia. The original name was Twin Towers, which they ended up dropping by the end of 2001. It was given a Space Shuttle theme, and Columbia is the name they went with for the Space Shot.

The trick was to surrender to the flow.

It would be one thing to name it "Super Storm Sandy", but that's not the case. "Super Storm" just a fairly generic weather phenomena like Cyclone, Hurricane, Earthquake!, etc. I just hope no one is thinking about renaming the Coney Island Cyclone.

Why can't we focus on the real problem...why do we insist on giving storms names in the first place? Now not only am I forced to give a weather event a human name that implies it has some kind of identity, but we can't name an amusement park ride after a weather event, because it reminds people of the damage it...excuse me, he/she... caused.

I can't be the only one who thinks that's asinine, right?

When you put it in that context, it is seriously absurd. I agree with your earlier comments too, that people seem to have a strange attachment to pain and suffering. I realize you can't know happiness without pain, but wallowing in it seems like a really crappy way to exist.

I completely forgot until I read the thread Gonch linked to that this very thing (naming a ride after the exact weather event that caused damage to the location) occurred before.

Both the Tsunami and Super Storm were pretty devastating events. However, the Tsunami had a greater impact on loss of life. Super Storm was all about property damage, and though a few died it was mainly second people's home. My dad is a full time resident of Ocean City, NJ. His store was completely destroyed and his full time residence had 4ft of water in it. He has no problem with the name. He actually thinks its funny. I do too, it how jersey is and how we deal with things. We make a joke out of it. Lighten up people!

It's a lot easier to play the victim than to do the work necessary to change things yourself.

I read this article awhile back that I think some of you will find very interesting. It really ties in well with what Carrie & Jeff were discussing about being attached to pain and suffering.

A friend directed me to it after I was expressing my frustration with how negative the media tends to be and how people tend to discuss the most awful stories and events in social environments.

Many of the points made seem so true. For example, I've told several people that I'm going to visit my sister in Boston for the Memorial Day weekend. Do they want to discuss pleasant things like what activities we're planning? No, like clockwork, it has been, "Oh my...was she at the Boston Marathon when the bombings took place? Was she locked down in her house?" Ugh.

YOU PEOPLE JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND! SUPER STORM SANDY IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW...ERR...JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO! THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT WRONG!!!

Edited to add: Watch Lord Gonchar come back with some witty retort! See Tyler Boes Cringe at someone making fun of Michigan! See? I can't edit myself in to make myself look like I was right all along fast enough!

This didn't seem worthy of a news item, but here's a similar story that I think the Orlando Sentinel pretty much made up:

They actually delayed opening the attraction when it debuted out of respect for a series of tornados that caused death and destruction that year.

Wow. In other shocking news, all coasters with Twister and Tornado in their name are still operating, too.

I don't understand this "too soon" thing at all. I never have.

If something will be funny in a year, it's funny now.

A relative of mine was killed in the crash of Swissair 111 fifteen years ago. I still find air disaster jokes funny. I'm particularly fond of the Concorde ones...

My hair just stood on end. I can't relate, sorry.

What makes this even more creepy is that I'm flying Swissair in three weeks.

Honestly, Swiss International Airlines seems to have an outstanding reputation these days and from what I hear, they're a pretty big contributor to the profits of the Lufthansa group. They are one of the top five airlines I want to fly who I've never flown before.

Geez, I should notify my home park that it's rides offend me. I've been attacked by a Viper, clawed by an American Eagle, possessed by a Demon, and stood up by Batman. I was also attacked by an Iron Wolf, but they asked him to leave.

Joking aside, I can see both ends of the offended/not-offended spectrum. There has to be a happy middle-ground.

The fact that I do not have such a top 5 list makes my life feel hollow and incomplete.

Well, that was a bit of hyperbole in that I never actually sat down and wrote a list of who I want to fly. Part of the problem is that I'm just not in any major hurry to get to Switzerland except to say I've been there.

My airline has a good agreement with them for employee travel, though, so, given the time for the double connection I would need to make to get to one of the places in Europe I really want to visit, I'd check them out.

For reference, though, I suppose if I had to pick my top five most desired airlines that I've not yet flown, in no particular order, it'd be Swiss, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Virgin Australia.

The thing is, it's okay to be offended at something. It's okay to be offended at anything. No one should be able to tell someone else how to feel about something.

But if someone finds something offensive and I do not, I do not agree with the offended person demanding that everyone else who isn't offended be affected as well.

If something offends me, I have no issues with telling someone, within reason. But it's not my place to try and make that person think differently.
