During a ceremony today at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort, Amusement Today announced its annual Golden Ticket Awards with a few surprising new winners among traditional repeaters. The awards, based on surveys submitted by well-traveled park enthusiasts around the world, honor the top parks and rides as well as cleanest, friendliest and most efficient operations. Cedar Point retained its position as best park while Six Flags New England's Superman edged out Millennium Force for best steel coaster.

To be honest, I really don't care much for ranking or comparing rides. I don't see the point in having a personal top ten list or anything like that. While I do have some favorite rides, I won't rank them.

However, after my first ride on Superman at SFNE last Sunday, I made the comment that I couldn't believe that ride wasn't number 1 on the Golden Ticket awards since those seem to be the most popular amusement related awards.. I wasn't rating Superman mind you, but I honestly was blown away by the ride. This is one ride that truly lived up to the hype, and then some.

Am I the only one here who thinks that Superman: RoS at Six Flags New England was not even close to being the greatest ride in the world? Personally I feel everthing from Magnum to Apollo's Chariot was a better ride. While a good ride I just never saw it as the steel coaster to end all steels.

I agree, Sean. I don't like the whole ranking thing either. But then again, I don't see the list to be all that surprising. S:ROS is pretty darn good, and I don't really see anything else that really doesn't belong in high regard.

I was glad to Six Flags over Texas getting some props. Three coasters in the steel poll and one in the wood. 4 coasters looks pretty good to me. That doesn't even count Batman which is also a good coaster.

Everyone's going to have a different opinion on everything... I'd never debate which specific coaster should be rated the absolute best. My opinions constantly change depending on what park I'm at, and what ride I'm on.

BUT...

How can you have Mean Streak on a top 50 list that doesn't include Dorney's Thunderhawk or Conneaut's Blue Streak?

ApolloAndy: Then you haven't talked to me about X. While I think TTD is absolutely incredible, I thought X was one of the roughest, most overrated, overhyped rides ever. Call me jaded if you want, but it did nothing for me.

Short, rough, and totally underwhelming.

Mean Streak is only on that list because more people have ridden it than, for example, Thunderhawk or Blue Streak.

I did find the list at little strange compared to other years....or maybe it's just how a few placed higher than others. The two biggest suprises for me was:

Mean Streak made the list and Batman's Knight Flight at SFWoA didn't. At least they got SUE and Wicked Twister right ;)

Finally! I've been waiting for this moment for years!!!

Now come over to Six Flags New England and ride the #1 coaster, even though most of you knew S:ROS was better than MF in the first place. Now you have proof.

A story to my grandchildren in 50 years: "Yeah kids, I remember the first year Superman was the #1 coaster. All you kids can see is that big sign in front of SFNE that says every year it was the best: 2003- 2053." lol.

I don't understand how TTD could be #11. TTD is better than MF,Raptor,Magnum and yet the tallest, fastest coaster on the planet comes in at #11.

I hate how Six Flags builds the same kinds of coaster with the same name in each park.

OH MY GOD. Is the world coming to an end? Did I just read the Sean Flaharty rode Superman at Six Flags New England?!

:) Glad you finally got out there to ride it, Sean! It's a damn incredible coaster.

Oh, and thanks for calling me back after you lost signal in that tunnel. :-P

Placing SFMM's Goliath over SFOT's Titan proves that the parks with more visitors get more votes regardless of the rides quality. The Titan is a greatly improved version of the same ride with an extra intense helix and slightly steeper first drop.

Is Steel Dragon really so bad that it is not in the top 50 when it is the longest and used to be tallest and fastest I just think it is really funny that they would build what looks like such a great coaster somewhere where it can't even be ranked in thetop 50. Just think if they would have built Steel Dragon in the US. Same thing with Dodonpa. I think TTD should be in the top 3 even with downtime, because it is the most incredible ride experience I have evr been on and better than Magnum and Millenium Force(I haven't ridden S:ROS or Expedition Geforce). Also how is Texas Giant still in the top 10 when that is the absolute worst wooden coaster I have evr ridden, even son of beast is 20 times better than that!

Where was Scream! on this list? I think that should've gotten a tip of the hat! I mean, it had inversions, no floor, and a great view of their parking lot! lol

Still, parking lot aside, I think Scream should've been somewhere in the top 50.

EDIT: PKI: best kids area three years running. PKI PRIDE!!!
