Track begins traveling up tower of Cedar Point mystery ride

Posted Sunday, October 6, 2002 4:23 PM | Contributed by Jeff

What appears to be an Intamin rocket coaster starts looking like a real ride, despite the lack of a formal announcement from Cedar Point. Track and parts are scattered across the Soak City parking lot while rows of footers appear at the construction site. View the photos in the GTTP news section.

It would appear from the GTTP pix that Draggin' Iron gives you a decent view of the site. Is this true?

More importantly, are they keeping ID open? Its operation will be very, very important to Da Midget.

Yes, Iron Dragon is still open. And you can get a nice slow view of the construction area from it ;) It's kinda cool how Iron Dragon use to be there by itself and now it's getting sadwiched between to "big" rides.

I was at The Point Saturday and the Iron Dragon is still running and gives a view of some of the work area. You can get up close and personal over by the Magnum, no white wood fence, just some plastic snow fence up to keep people out of the area. There are three layers completed as you can see in the pictures and they reach up close to 200 feet now. There is enough yellow pipe sections in the parking lot and construction site to make at least 2 more layers. That would take the ride over 300 ft.
For those wishing to put this tower into prospective, check out the web cam at Cedarpoint.com and compare the height of the tower with the trees and the Millennium in the background. The boom of the crane was down Saturday and let me tell you, it is one hell of a tall crane. I wish that I would have paced it off so that I could tell you how tall it was.
None of the ride ops would shed any light on the subject. I felt bad for them because everyone was asking them what they were building. A lot of the ops were just weekend help, they did not work the whole summer.

Cedar Point isn't really getting a coaster next year, you know? The park is just fooling all the enthusiasts and they just wanted to test it in the slightly warmer weather and then send it up to Michigan's Adventure once everything is worked out. Sorry! ;)

(On a serious note, this thing looks like it might be a little fun :))

I really hope the park announces it before the park closes, so they have the chance to sell more season passes to new potential buyers.

The worst part about Cedar Point is that in 2 days you only ride like 10 rides unless you go in the off season.

Add me to the list that's never had a problem doing this. I just avoid weekends. Never had a problem hitting every coaster in one day since 1995 when we began making yearly pilgrimages to america's roller coast.

Phantom's Revenge--

I went on a Friday in the middle of July and I rode every coaster, rode Gemini like 3 times and had tons of time at night that I could've done more but the 'rents couldn't keep up. Most of my lines were 15 min. with the exception of MF and Mantis (because all those going for MF went to Mantis because MF was closed for a little while in the morning).

Brett88-

The Freeway pass thing works like this (I got one for WT and just missed the last one for MF). In the morning (at least if you wanted MF you needed to go in the morning...not the same for WT) you go to a booth located near where the entrance is for the ride. They stamp your hand with a time to come back to get in line. Then you go through and enter the line in a place where you generally wait 15 min. as opposed to an hour to ride. Rules are no two in a day for one ride and they only give out so many.

Hope this helps. *** This post was edited by DarbStarPress on 10/7/2002. ***

I've never been to CP with less than an hour wait for Mean Streak and less than a two hour wait for Mantis (my two least favorite adult coasters at the park minus ID), so it looks like I need to avoid those weekends... which is actually really hard to do. We've done the third weekend in May the past three years and you would think we would learn. ;)

Wish me luck next weekend! *** This post was edited by Koaster King on 10/7/2002. ***

Looks great! Some people are hoping it won't be launch, TH, brakes. I'm one of them.

I was thinking the other day, what could there be after the TH? Overbanked turns aren't exactly original (sarcasm turned up high) & there's some serious speed left over. How about the first TH be non-inverting & immediately followed by an inverting TH? That way if the first is over 400ft tall, the 2nd can be around 250ft & pull serious G's when inverted. :) No need to have another very tall structure after the first.

My hunch is I would expect the annoucement to come after October 27th Cedar Point's last day. That's my guess.

Just to through something on the table......

If they were dueling, couldn't one side have a tophat inversion and the other just the hill like Xcelerator?

An hour for Mean Streak?? Although I try to avoid Saturdays whenever possible, I've never waited more than 20 minutes for MS in the past two years, and most of the time it was close to a walk on. Once this summer several people noticed the 45 minute wait on the sign and turned to leave. But there was no line at all. Someone probably just messed with the sign.

I'm sure they'll have Freeway available for the new coaster, and I'm looking forward to less of a line for MF next year.

This thing is going to be huge! Well over 300'. I believe that we are seeing about half the tower. I know some are saying that the tophat will be very small, but those towers are farther apart that you might think. The ride will launch up that tower into some sort of tophat and then come screeming down the opposit side of the tower. Look at those footers for the track supports on the right side. They are being built to handle a great deal of force. This will be record breaking and unique. How can any park stand up to the ride collection that CP has put together?
