Track begins traveling up tower of Cedar Point mystery ride

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

What appears to be an Intamin rocket coaster starts looking like a real ride, despite the lack of a formal announcement from Cedar Point. Track and parts are scattered across the Soak City parking lot while rows of footers appear at the construction site. View the photos in the GTTP news section.

I took an image of Xcelerator's top hat and one of this new coaster to do a comparison. I resized the images so that the track width apears the same size. You will notice that the width of the tower on this new coaster is significantly wider than Xcelerator. Certainly this isnt precise, but it is close enough...

sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't

I love sitting here reading all these theroies you guys have you are so close but here is what i know for sure!!! It will be exactly like the excelartator at Knotts except it will go 420 feet and 110 miles per hour making it a rocket coaster. I only live 20 mins away so that is how I know all this. My uncle is also a achrtiet there he is making the platform for the new ride! Hope this is enough info for you guys to sit on for a while. check out the live web cam on top of hotel breakers watching construction of the new ride at www.cedarpoint.com
Yeah right buddy...

87 different coasters for this year and counting... 149 total!

Xcelerator's supports are much different. They seem to surround you, where on this the track lays right on top. Maybe this is to compensate for the height? Or maybe it's not what you are expecting..

Examples for my earlier post:

Notice how the supports do not extend PAST the track.

The track goes INTO the supports.

The new attraction will involve a roller coaster, plus a restraunt and observation area constructed at the top of the 3 huge yellow columns. It will be the first of its kind in the amusement park industry. Are you guys happy now?! The suspense is over. Visit Cedar Point in 2003 and check it out.

It will not be 400 ft. tall apparently certain people on this website cannot do simple math. The coaster at Knotts launches you at 82 mph to the height of 205 ft. tall. How fast do you think you would have to launch to get a train over a 400 ft. top hat. It is not 110-120 mph but hey keep believing it will be 400 ft. tall. You just won't be correct.

i swear to god it's sinking...

Cedar point does it again! I wish i lived in Ohio now i am making sure i go to CP next summer. This ride looks to be kinda similar to Xceleator at Knotts. That is just what it seems becamseone side of the tower has track o nit and the other side had supports hangin out so it could be. Cedar Point is definately the best amusement park ever there going to have to extend the park hrs just so everyone can ride all the rides in this place or make tickets good for 2 days! I hope i can ride this monster!!

Alright, in response to those who argue that this is just one of two large towers... If this is true, why are there identical track supports on the tower parallel to the track that is already in place?

I hope someone is saving all these posts of the doubdters about the height and speed of this thing. Because I KNOW they are the same ones who will say they knew it was going to be over 400ft all along. I suggest some of you with these theories check out the Area 51 forum on GTTP if you havent already. Most of these theories have been discussed and some have been worked out or disproven. Not to mention Jeff has given some hints as to what this is.

Personally, and this is a guess. But based on the hints and construction photos. I think this thing will be around 420ft high and around the 115 to 120 mph mark. I dont think it will be like Xcelerator though other than it will be a rocket coaster with a launch. One of Xcelerators overbanks goes through the top hat structure. It doesnt appear that this is possible for the CP attraction based on the construction up to this point.

Heh heh...interesting number. Do you think they'd paint it green?

Sounds absolutely insane!

CPLady: I'm not sure if I share your optimism regarding a shorter wait for Millennium Force. It would be nice, though. Their fast pass system is very efficient (but then again I'm not surprised), and should work just as well for the new coaster.

I agree also with the MS wait - I think my max wait was 25 minutes this year, and that was on a very crowded Saturday. I avoid the place on Saturdays as well (or try to), but in the interest of being fair to the park, I got to ride everything with a max wait of only 1 hour on Millennium Force during my last visit on an August Saturday. *** This post was edited by ophthodoc on 10/8/2002. ***

I'm looking at http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/webcam/beach.cfm

and from the picture it seems that the crane which is installing the tower and track for the mystery is almost fully upright. Comparing it to Magnum in the background it seems to confirm that the ride will be in the 330' range instead of 400'. The crane, while large, doesn't appear to be able to extend to over 350-375'.

What have you gotten me into?

Hello,

I'm new here. Anyways, I am a long time member of thepointol.com and a couple days ago when the big crane was being put up someone found out what company made the crane. They linked me to their website and the exact crane that was a CP. This crane has the possibility of reaching 500ft. Second, you would think CP wouldn't put the crane up all the way to give away how big it is going to be. Finally, CP wants the height record very, very badly. Trust me I personally know someone who is "high" in the CP management and she said that the height record is something that CP likes to have. In order for this to happen they would need to build it 416ft. or higher. Personally, to make it look like they are not just squeaking past the record like Steel Dragon did to MF I believe that the new coaster will be anywhere between 420-430ft. I think all coaster enthusiasts should keep their hopes up high because this coaster is going to be HUGE.
