Cedar Fair finalizes 2001 expenditures

Cedar Fair, parent company to Cedar Point, Dorney and Knott's Berry Farm, has finalized their 2001 capital expenditures for the 2001 season at their five parks.

Time for a little history lesson...grab a chair sit back ,RELAX and LISTEN....
First running an amusement park is a BUSINESS. Regardless of what we may think CedarFair and the rest of the companies don't build new coasters just because of a "cool desgin/concept"
Now lets look at this World of Fun situation.
Take a look at Cedar Point in the 60's...nice small amusement park
In the 70's...Kings Island opened(1972)..some say this helped push Cedar Point...also more people started to enjoy amusement parks in general which DisneyWorld had a hand in helping.
In the 80's Cedar Point became a top ten park with strong regional draw...
In the 90's...actually started in 1989 with Magnum..Cedar Point GREW into the World Leader it is today...
Case in point: IT TAKES TIME and CEDAR FAIR KNOWS WHAT IT IS DOING...
Ask the Valleyfair people...I heard some of the same remarks WOF fans are making today five years after CedarFair bought ValleyFair.
You may not like it today but just wait...

What about the TOGO lawsuit? If that rules in KBF's favor, wouldn't that give Cedar Fair (or specificaly Knott's) a whole bunch of money to spend on a new coaster / park improvements?
BTW: It sounds like if you (no persons in particular) hate what is happening to your homepark, since you cannot change that, maybe you should move?

Let's all think logically here. ALL of the Cedar Fair parks will eventually add new coasters. None of them have stopped building them. Some will get 'em this year, some next, and some in the next few years. If CP, WOF, VF, or KBF doesn't get one this year its not a slap in the face to those living in the area.

I think this has to be the longest that a "heated" thread has remained open.
I think that we lost our cool a couple of times, but I must commend everyone for acting as "professional" about this subject as we did.

Simcoaster, up above you mentioned, "Cedar Point is considered first", that is true and false in someways. Cedar Fair wants ALL of their parks to do well, not just the Point. Cedar Point will get the greatest rides, because it is the mother flagship park with the most attendance of the family. However Cedar Fair wants the best for all of their parks.

This thread has been interesting thus far. I just have one question: Poor Valleyfair? What's that all about?
What did VF just get for '00?
- A PT that's a little taller than CP's and has both Shot and Drop towers, unlike KBF.
- Six additional kiddie rides
- An extensive landscaping project that took half the summer. Trees, shrubs and flowery stuff everywhere.
Between the rides, the additions to employee housing and almost every other coaster getting heavy-duty work.....
- Corkscrew: repainted, train work
- Wild Thing: extensive retracking in helix & return run
- Excalibur: Bottom of first drop + 1/2 of turn #1 dismantled and completely rebuilt
- High Roller: Braking system replaced
...there's no telling how much total cash got spent on VF last summer. $12 million might even be a conservative number.
In fact, it's only the second time in six years there hasn't been a major ride installation.
'96: WT and Skycoaster (yes, at the same time)
'97: Chaos
'98: No rides (but KCS had a Rotoshake installed)
'99: Mad Mouse
'00: PT, Frog Hopper and 5 other kiddie rides
Include KCS-MOA's Mighty Axe and Ghost Blasters, and the Twin cities area has yet to drop to an average of one new ride a year from CF.
Pity us when the temps drop to -30 F, but not because of the way CF treats us. We really have nothing to complain about.

Nice attitudes. I had to feel the same way about Dorney when it was first taken over by Cedarfair. There were several years there when all we received was the Monster and Swan Boats. I just sat back and relaxed knowing that the best amusement franchise to date was at helm. Look at Dorney Park now. I am very pleased with all the improvements they have made. You also mentioned something about landscaping. I will take numerous landscaping improvement and additions over one new flat ride anytime. These make a trip to the park so much more enjoyable and allow you to get a better sense of the fun atmosphere which parks provoke. If it means anything though, I think that your park is indeed ready for their next big ride, just wait and see.
Cedar Fair certainly knows how to run amusements parks, but that doesn't me we have to sit back and just agree with everything they do. So far, they have done Knott's proud. But if they were going to tear down Haunted Shack for a pay-per-ride attraction, at least build something original, or larger. Just my opinion. For those of you who think Cedar Fair is the holy grail, that's fine, but understand that opinions work both ways, I don't just agree to be agreeing just because it's Cedar Fair. They have flaws just like any other company. Thanks.

I don't think they have flaws really, I think people just don't want to accept what they are doing. It is a defense mechanism, which are completely unconscience. It is actually called projection. Just thought I would throw some psychology your way. So they got rid of the Haunted Shack, it had to go, we now know that. Ok, so why didn't they built a larger Skycoaster? Because that probably would have cost more because of research and development. With the standard skycoaster you can pretty much assume how fast it will pay itself off and other terms. I think that Cedarfair made another smart move with this.
Hmmm. I have no problems with their capital expansion plans, but their history with dark rides and walkthru attractions is a different matter.
CP buffs still mourn the passing of the Fun House (arcade), EarthQuake (Snoopy Gift shop) and Pirate Ride (another arcade -- entry area only).
A hypercoaster doesn't faze CoastaBaby (age 8) one bit....but even the dopiest dark ride (read: Sally GhostBlasters) casts a magical spell.

Exactly CPlaya. Cedar Fair has no flaws? Isn't that a matter of opinion? One person's perfection could be another's flaw right? The skycoaster was dumb in my opinion. Others may feel differently. Sure it may make them some money, but so would another more creative, less cloned attraction. It seems more like laziness to me, more Six Flags MO. See what I mean by different opinions? :)

i completely agree simcoaster, the skycoaster was just a cheap ride to buy them some time till the next year.
it took them so long to open perilous plunge, that they could of used that as the ride of 2001 at KBF
by the way, i rode it last week, it was fun and you get completely soaked, it was cool.
