Flight of Fear: One of my new favorites

I won't get too deep into the reasons, but the ride formerly known as Outer Limits at PKI is now one of my favorite rides. It's fast, it's intense and it's pain free. Sure, I was expecting it to be more comfortable with lap bars, but I had no idea it would be that good of a ride.

What a difference when you can look around as you climb into that giant cobra roll. If they keep the mid-course completely open, this thing will have one of the fastest finishes of any coaster I've been on. The last few turns and corkscrew are amazingly fast. Who knew Premier could save a ride that was so terrible?

I'm sold on the OTSR vs. lap bar debate.

Flight of Fear is far an away my favorite coaster at PKI. My TR is here, so I won't repeat that stuff:

I'm ashamed to admit this - I think. But I've never been on FOF. The last time I was at PKI, I didn't get the chance to go on because I had to be getting home.
Exactly what kind of inversions does it have? I thought they were just vertical loops. I didn't know it had a corkscrew and a cobra roll.

Well, the launch leads directly into a great big boomerang, which gives you the two highest points on the track, right up near the ceiling about 80' in the air; then there is a third inversion that's more like an inclined loop or something like that which is easy to miss. Then in the last half of the ride, there is a half-Corkscrew. There are no vertical loops on Flight of Fear...not enough room for them!

If you want to see the layout of FOF just look at photos of Joker Jinx at SFA which has the same layout.

When I rode FOF on Friday, the mid course brake was set to almost totally stop the train. Was it backed off when others rode?

I agree that the new restraints are a vast improvements. I also like the added lights.

Ditto. Great judgement Jeff. I never thought that anyone else accept me would actually like FoF.

It was the first launched coaster i had ever been in and I loved it.It was my favorite launched until last year when I rode Superman Ultimate Escape.

I loved FoF even with the OTSR's now I will love it even more I know it!!!!

Well... haven't ridden it, don't even know what the layout is like, but still sounds good.

The real good news, which I guess is kind of a topic in this thread... is the fact that most people's opinion (isn't that an oxymoron?) happens to be for the lap bars, and down with the horse collars/OSTR!

I'd be more than glad to rid of them on all Premere or Arrow coasters as long as the G's will hold me in, and if I get out to PKI this year, after SOB... I'm definately heading to Flight of Fear (pending the line isn't more than an hour).

I don't see how these would be much of a difference. I didn't feal any headbanging when I rode it. (and I love the lighting of this coaster)

I can't believe Paramount and Premier have made one of the "worst, most headbanging, and most unridable" coaster one of the best and smoothest coasters in the parks. Make sure everyone who voted poorly for the first change their buzz ratings. It's a whole "new" coaster. And IMO, the winner of the best improvement to a coaster ever. Let's just hope the 2nd and 3rd train are ready to put on track soon(and SFA takes this into consideration).

I just rode it yesterday...totaly rad!!!

Now we can only wonder how good Steel Phantom could have been with lapbars...I guess we'll never know.:(

Which FOF, Kings Dominion or Kings Island? PKI's has been off all season.

If you want some real headbangning go on an Arrow looper that produces a great amount of headbanging.

Am I to assume this is still LIM? Even without the horse collars?

I liked it last year when I went..I couldnt see them improving it.. I thought it was a cool ride..

I don't think I'll be able to get there this year...
I'll have season passes to Hershey, going to Dorney and Busch Gardens.

PKI and Cedar was last year.

It's the same old ride. Same train, in fact. LIM launch from 0-54 MPH in nothing flat, immediately into a Boomerang, lots of twisting in the semi-dark, finish with a wild half-Corkscrew. Only now you can actually ride it without being beat senseless.

The strange part is that GP ride the thing and know that it is a lot better than last year, but even with the old photo hanging in the photo booth, they don't seem to realize what the major change is. :)

I rode it a few years ago and it promptly went to the very bottom of my steel coaster list just for the fact that the whole ride was one big headbanging extravaganza. I actually rode the PKD version, but they should be the same. It sounds pretty fun now, hopefully other companies follow suit and realize we don't need OTSRs for corkscrews.

That was my frustration with Premier Rides in general. Clearly they had a niche and a cool technology to close the deal (LIM's), but the execution was lost in the OTSR's. Now Flight of Fear confirms everything I suspected but couldn't prove. The trains track smoothly through a tight and fast course.

Of course they track smoothly...the guide wheels and upstops are spring loaded, the front axle is fully articulated, and the back axle can pitch and yaw. The cars are, believe it or not, not trailered.
