Ride torn down: Replacement worse!?!

Have any of you ever experienced the heart ache of having one of your favorite rides torn down? Even worse, torn down to make room for something "new and exciting"? Even WORSE, that "new and exciting" ride isn't as good as what was there before? That totally happened when Knott's tore down the really cool, and fairly rare (I think) soapbox derby racers. Then they replaced it with windjammer!? Who has lost one of their favorites?

Sort of like how when Elitch's moved, they decided to build a "new-and-improved" Twister instead of a copy of their original classic...

At PKI they tore down SKYLAB and turned it into that stupid rock climbimg wall. That still ticks me off just to think about it. I know that there were problems with the ride, but couldn't they have put something interesting there instead of that?

I was really disheartened when Cedar Point removed their dark rides...

Upside-down Funhouse became Kid Arthur's Court
SF Earthquake became Bearenstein Bear Land
Pirate Ride became another arcade

Or the gradual degradation of Paddlewheel Excursions at Cedar Point with the new boats, shortened course and new rides packed right up the edge of the lagoons for almost the entire run.
Or Cedar Fair's rape of a lot of Dorney Park's charm (read destruction of Journey to the Center of the Earth and the rocket swing thing that I can't think of the name for)
Or Six Flag's rape of a lot of the local individuality and regional identity of parks in the name of national branding" The "Mcdonaldization" of the world.
Or when an entire amusement park is replaced with clones of condos and fast food joints that you find *everywhere*.
Or just about anytime a classic ride is replaced with some new fangled contraption.

Been there done that, when the Zambezi Zinger was removed it was "replaced" by what we like to call the Giant Cheese Puff/Boomerang. Ouch!

You know, that Millrace was a neat little log flume.

My favorite ride in the world was taken down in 2001. I mean, when I found out it was being taken out, i got that feeling you get when a family member of friend dies, that's how much I loved this ride. The ride im talking about is SKY WHIRL, the triple armed ferris wheel biult by Intamin in '76. To make things worse, that was the LAST one in the USA. The park informed me that the current plan for SKY WHIRL is "relocation", but I seriousley doubt relocation in the park. I guess it's gopnna be replaced by a Vekoma's Deja Vu this spring :( . Oh well, there is not anything I can do about it (unless I had $525,000). And I dont care how tall, or how fast, or how impressive, or how new this ride is, it will NEVER, EVER, replace SKY WHIRL.

Amen. Every time I pass that stupid wall I think of Skylab. It was a great ride!

When SFO took down all of the flat rides for the new coasters. I mean, cmon, they could have at least made an EFFORT to keep one or two of them.

Also, when Geauga Lake (now SFO) took out the CLASSIC Rocket Ships for Mind Eraser. Those things still sit back behind the Raging Wolf Bobs, saddening me.

I thoroughly enjoyed Le Cachot at Kennywood, which was replaced by, well, some tables and a little more room to move. Rotor, which I also loved, was replaced with some lockers.

I hope Phantom's Revenge doesn't disappoint...

Well, the building that Le Cachot was in had saw better days. I miss the Fun House at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Now it houses the 'Catapult', an indoor scrambler. And I remember my grandmother coming down the slide at the Cedar Point funhouse. That one was a great one too.

Well, I can add one thing, Fun Town in Chicago was torndown and replaced with a hardware store :(. I believe Funtown was the last amusement park in Chicago (on the south side 95th & Stony Island). It was a great little place.

Actually, they had to remove LeCachot, since it burned to the ground.

As I recall, Neil, the Le Cachot fire happened while the building was being demolished.
