The next coaster craze will be....?
Years ago, the craze was for a coaster with a loop, starting with revolution. Around that time, the people wanted to go upside down, and thats what the parks seemed to put in..looping coasters(the reason for so many arrow loopers?)
Starting with B:TR, inverts were constantly being built to bring in crowds...as the invert was a big crowd pleaser.
Nowadays, it seems that the craze is for the taller/faster coasters. Whether the be a launch or not, thats what seems to be in high demand.
My question is, what do you think is the current craze, and what will the future's be? IMO, i think its the Hyper/Giga phase of coaster history, but thats just me.
So, what do you think?
I think the choices are so great now that parks aren't locked into a certain "craze." They can choose from dozens of different kinds of rides, or, they can ask a company to create something altogether different.
Not like in the day, when, if you wanted a looping coaster, you got either an Arrow corkscrew or a Schwartzkopf vertical looper.

I think there are many crazes. The hyper/giga one, the Deja Vu type one, and the twisting impulse to name a few. I feel that boomerangs and impulse coasters are "stock" rides that parks can easily purchase as fillers, and they count towards their coster numbers. Flight of Fear rides are this way too.
I wish that more parks would go towards the slightly smaller, but insanely airdfilled wooden coasters! That would be a craze that would make me very happy! I would also like to see a craze of 4th dimensions and flyers, unless you consider this one a craze already!
I think if B&M can do it right the Flying Coaster will catch on, as will the Rocket Coasters from Intamin.
Its cool that Cedar Point has a unique coaster, but there's a reason why VF got the single twist and if you look at what's up with Wicked Twister I think you'll know why.

I think Intamin isn't building more double twisting models due to the fact they have had structural issues with WT.
I think Impulses are catching on, but B&M Flyers and compact floorlesses will spread like Wildfire (pun intended ).
SF will clone these things like mad and other chains could use some reliable solid coasters (Paramount, please pick up the phone and call Monthey!)

I don't get it, Chris. Aren't the twists on WT basically the same as the other Impulses? Granted they rotate more, but how does the fact that it's a spiral over a straight spike change things?
Maybe it's not the twisting aspect of WT that caused the issues. If so, why don't the other three spiral impulses from SF have those issues?

Up until a few months ago, I would have said there were two crazes.
First, you have the mega parks who want a GIANT, impressive looking ride with monster capacity. Obviously, they would get a hyper or giga (unless there are zoning requirements). If you really examine the past 15 years of the industry, Hypers didn't pick up until Cedar Fair invested into their parks. Even then, the movement did not go full swing untill about 1999/2000 when B+M and Intamin (not to mention Giavonola)unleashed their AMAZING rides onto the industry. Although the economy is bad for right now, I will bet many more parks will sink money into these additions when it gets better. When that is, I don't know...
Next, you have to look at CCI woodies. Until this year, they were doing very well because they combine pure thrill with economics. Why would a small park pay 15$ million for a hypercoaster when they could pay less than 5? They don't have capacity issues, and often have less space and capita. Despite this, many of these rides (Raven, Legend, Shivering Timbers, to name some of the greats) have gone on many a top 10 list and are great money makers too:). When gravity group picks up, they'll be doing quite the same business when the economy picks up. If only they had built one for me in my backyard....

I really enjoy a good looper, but I am starting to favor the steel non-loopers as I start to ride more and more.
