Idora Wildcat

Riverview Bobs

Tornado @ Coney Island

Rye Aeroplane

Cyclone @ Puritas Springs

Anything by Traver - I'm not sure I'd like them, but I sure want to try them.

Anything Carl Phare had a hand in. - Coaster made me a believer.

Well, I can't argue with any of the choices so far, so I'll just add one that hasn't been mentioned yet -- the Woodcliffe Blue Streak. Hard to believe this thing was built in 1927!

The Big Dipper at Jantzen Beach in Portland,OR.I never got to ride this Carl Phare classic, but remember seeing it as a child.Everyone that I have talked to that rode it said that it was a great ride. From comparing photos of the JB Dipper and the only existing Carl Phare coaster, the Vancouver PNE Coaster, they were very similar rides. At least I can say that I have ridden the PNE Coaster.

Chris,

Carl Phare had a hand in rebuilding Coaster Thrill Ride at the Puyallup Fair after it was damaged by fire.

There also used to be a Carl Phare coaster at a defunct park in Seattle called Playland.I saw a photo of it in a book about Seattle interurban railroads.I have not been able to find out any more information on this park .

For photos of the Jantzen Beach Big Dipper, go to www.pdxhistory.com.

Ronald - Thanks for the link. The Big Dipper looks and sounds like it would have been a great ride.

Here's a link I found about the man, if you haven't seen it: http://www.historylink.org/output.CFM?file_ID=3562

Darienlakefan~I rode Idora’s Wildcat and Jack Rabbit after the ACE convention at Kennywood (1981?). The Rabbit was sooooooo slow. I thought I’d have to get out and push it along. The Wildcat deserves its wicked reputation. I only rode once (in the backseat). The first drop wasn’t anything special, but from then on, look out! The back was like a WHIP!

I would love to see a park rebuild there long gone Virginia Reel's. Particularly if the park was Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Give me a ride on Euclid Beach's Thriller, Flying Turns, and Racing Coaster; which had what appeared to be a triple-down, a ride on the Puritas Springs (Cleveland) Cyclone, and a ride on the Revere Beach Lightning and I'd be happy.... and very sore! :)

I know these aren;t woodies, but the Bat at PKI, Cyclone and Jumbo Jet at CP. I noticed no one said DrachenFire. No one misses it?? Never rode it so I don;t know! Only have it on Americas Greatest RollerCoaster Thrills 1 (in 3-D).

Definitely the Crystal Beach Cyclone! I am endlessly amazed by its design. Also, the Airplane coaster... Man, what an enormous impact the pictures of that coaster have on my Coaster Psyche!

Zanderdad - I've ridden Drachen Fire...that's why I didn't mention is in my list. It wasn't "all that." In fact I think the main reason it holds so much mystique is that it was SBNO for so long.

The Puritas Springs Cyclone, Woodcliffe Blue Streak, Palisades Park Lake Placid Bobsleds, Cyclone Racer, Ocean View Rocket, and the Rye Aeroplane.

Coasters I would of liked to of ridden in their first year- The Rattler, Texas Giant and Cyclone, Beast(before the brakes on the first hill), and Colossus at SFMM.

Remember that the first drop on Idora's Wildat was modified from its original banked dive. I can't remember when (or why) the first drop was modified. The fan curve, which is mentioned above in the quote, was of sufficient brutality to crack ribs.

Man I wish I could've ridden the Wildcat it seemed vicious Thanks for the Info guys!

I wish someone had a POV of the Idora Wildcat that would be great.

But it seems like every photo I see of the coaster is when it was closed down or SBNO.

I'd have to go with Crystal Beach Cyclone, there's just something about the title of "scariest coaster ever" that makes me want to jump on....

Also Drachen Fire, mostly because I never got the chance to ride it and so many enthusiasts wanted to save it (altough probably an equal number were glad to see it go)
