Why Six Flags will now fail.
Judging from our declining economic situation [political commentary removed... this is a coaster forum] this expansion Six Flags is in the middle of is a bad move and it won't be pretty. If they had done this say 4 years ago it would have been a different story.
Every sound business plan says you save your cash for a rainy day, when it rains, you buy because it's cheaper and it won't rain forever, and when it stops you'll be ready for the boom. It's not raining, it's just slightly cloudy. Six Flags is buying while the sun is still shining, the cost is higher, and the economy is uncertain. This spells one thing.... DISASTER!

Finally, getting to the subject (sorry for beating around the shrub) I think its a little too early to be gloomin' doomin' Six Flags, and I think it ought to be interesting.
A final note, I've read in a couple different spots that park expenditures are on a three plan, if this is true, then I'm assuming Six Flags set all the expansion plans up when the economy was booming. (And didn't have time to back out of the deal when the economy turned.)

Six Flags will not fail, they just forced people to realize the truth! Cedar Fair is nothing without record breakors, look at them now, they no longer have the highest coaster and they have lost their sacred title of most coasters at a park. I think that SFMM is now the best park in the world. And Six Flags is the best chain.

Maybe it is because I am not familiar with your posts, but I dont see your logic behind that one. Why are you so glad that Cedar Point is not "on top anymore." Do you work for the competition or something. I think as a "coaster enthusiast" you should be glad that parks like Cedar Point build so many huge rides for us to enjoy. =)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to back up CP here, just failed to see your logic, that's all.

Wow... I've read some pretty out there stuff today, but did I miss something? Did Cedar Fair remove Millennium Force, GhostRider, Steel Force, etc. and stop construction on Talon? If so, man I better sell that stock now!

Actually it's just Six Flags plan to solve the Geauga Lake parking problem: use the Sea World lots for overflow parking and run a water taxi over to Geauga Lake. :)
Not really, of course...but it is worth noting that one of the many traffic engineering disasters I had to deal with in 1999 was a traffic light that would let fifty vehicles come out of Sea World, then five through on the main road to Geauga. This at 10:00am when NOBODY was leaving Sea World and EVERYBODY wanted into Geauga...

After reading all the posts today, my conclusion is that Six Flags is expanding to compete with Cedar Point. Ohio is a premier market and Geauga Lake was a joke with no land. Different story now. SeaWorld was getting too costly and I believe they could not build rides due to the fact that SFO was right acroos the lake. It's really a shame if the animals go. I have so many fond childhood memories of SeaWorld. However, times are changing and I am looking forward to seeing what SFO looks like in a few years.
Will they fail. No way. Like I said, Ohio is too big of a market. We love our amusement parks in this state.

I think they'll do very well in Ohio... I don't think anyone doubts that. I think the concern is with the company as a whole.
Incidentally, I don't perceive that much competition with Cedar Point, which draws a good portion of its attendance from Detroit. Remember, $40 million in new rides from the "competition" still resulted in record attendance in Sandusky.

My beleif is that in 5-10 years give or take the coaster competition in ohio will reach a new level. With maybe even more names throwing their names into our states hat,possibly disney with a winter park (unlikely). With the possibility of Cedar point building a whole new park elswhere. If six flags promotes and creates a new kind of theme park with sea world then I see the two eventually fighting over trivial and constricting results within the confines of their park. Cedar Point is in utter shock over this so expect some kind of big announcement from them either dealing with a new coaster,area of land or purchase of a hotel cus right now Six flags is prime to take over as CoasterPark of Ohio

Competition? I live in C-Town and CP and SFO are about the same distance apart. it takes longer for me to get to SFO because of traffic. I went to CP 16 times more this year than SFO. Anyone west of me will still go to CP rather than SFO. CP will still draw the Rich western suburbs of Cleveland and Mo-Town while SFO will draw East Cleveland (sadly is quite a poor area) and Akron. Southern Greater Cleveland you could consider up for grabs. Akron, Youngtown, and East Cleveland VS. West Cleveland and Detriot.

How much is a "good portion"? I mean, how do you know? Are you basing this on the amount of Red Wings shirts you see? Counting license plates?, or is your statement based on the applause during the Summer Spectacular?
I just want real figures, based on real research for a change.

I have to add another thought. Everyone seems to be going back and forth about how these Six Flags developments either will or will not have an effect on Cedar Point.
The one thing that comes to mind is that all of these opinions are based on the past. That past (and present) include Cedar Point dominating the area as the biggest and the baddest.
We can all sit here and say "this is going to happen and that's going to happen" but the fact of the matter is the game has now changed. The coming years will bring explosive expansion to a park no one ever thought would compete with CP, now it does.
You can bet your MF TTR's that SFO will market this park to the hilt, not only in Cleveland, but in all of the same places CP targets. So yes, the stakes are higher now, the competition is hot, and from where I sit it is welcomed. It's going to benefit all of us who enjoy these parks a great deal.
Bottom line..SFO is a real player now, enjoy it.
