SF Great Adventure and Coney Island 7/19-7/20

Well I was in NYC for business this week so I managed to sneak away for a day at Great Adventure. Park was really empty on Thursday, I never waited more than twenty minutes in line. I took my first ride on Nitro in the front seat. The seats and restraints on this ride are great for freedom but the ride itself is just too tame. The first drop is ok as is the first turn but after that its pretty dull. I don't know where all the air time is that everybody is talking about. Maybe I am just spoiled by SROS at SFNE or maybe there just isn't that much air. I road it 3 times, once in front, back, and middle. Surprisingly enough the best ride was in the middle. That's where I felt the most G's. After 3 rides on Nitro I hit Medusa which is just a great looping coaster. Then over to Rolling Thunder for two rides. They were actually racing all four trains with now wait whatsoever. This coaster was a lot more enjoyable than the last time I road it, probably due to the fact that I had never "raced" on it before. The park was quite empty and probably due to that a lot of flat rides were not running which is too bad because they have so many. Still not a bad few hours that only cost me $10 for parking, admission was on my SFNE pass which barely cost me more than the price of a one day ticket to Great Adventure.
Friday night was time to catch a ballgame at the new Keyspan park with the Cyclones. Its a very nice park and a good deal of fun. We left the game early though because the Cyclone was beckoning me from centerfield. I have never ridden the Cyclone before and I regret this. It is without a doubt the best wooden coaster that I have ever ridden, and one of the best coasters period. That thing is non stop action. It may not be the biggest or the longest woodie but the quality that is packed into that little space is amazing. I will definitely be returning to ride again and again. Anyone anywhere near NY needs to come ride this coaster. The rest of the island is pretty seedy but a fun people watching experience. We also road the Jumbo Jet which is nothing special but was fun to try nonetheless. The Cyclone alone though is worth the trip and on Fridays there are fireworks. So go on a Friday night, get a hot dog, and ride the Cyclone. *** This post was edited by Figaro on 7/21/2001. ***

Sorry but there was just no air. If you want real air that feels like the whole train is going to jump the track you need to ride SROS at SFNE. Heck the little Cyclone at Coney which is really awesome had far more air time then Nitro. Nitro is a nice coaster but it seems like an entry level hyper. Its just too tame.
The Cyclone at Coney has more air than SFNE's Cyclone. I really like the SFNE Cyclone but it cannot hang with the original. Actually was the CI Cyclone the first Cyclone? I know it was built in 1927, but was there a cyclone before that? Regardless, that is the best woodie I have ever ridden. Keep the Beast and his Son, I will take the Cyclone any day. Front seat on both? The back seat of SROS is the best for air and "perceived" speed. The front has a great view but does not compare to the whip acceleration that one gets in the back seat. Try both the front and back. The middle is not as good but its just fine when you have a ride reservation.

Whats up with it is that it is too tame. The first drop is not steep enough, and nothing happens after it. The coaster is really tall but thats it. It is smooth yet boring. Sorry but if you rode it you might feel the same way. If people like it thats great. I was just extremely underwhelmed by it. SROS has extremely powerful airtime, you feel like you are being pushed up not just like you are floating. I only felt a mild sensation on one of the big hills on Nitro. Too tame.
GOT to get a hot dog from Nathans--but dont forget a knish too!!

i agree with Figaro..Nitro was a little bit of a dissapointment...but to be honest, B&M hypers dont have quite a steep angle on their drops as Intamin hypers...ive ridden S:ROS at SFA, and it kicks butt man!!! way better than Nitro...sorry stealth if that dissapoints you, but maybe you should get out and ride some new stuff. an Figaro, trust me buddy, i WILL ride Cyclone at the Island before i leave this earth!!

Five bucks for the ride, four for a re-ride. You can also by a day pass to the park for $15 which is also good for the Cyclone. Of course I discovered that after I had ridden it three times D'oh!!!
People are entitled to their opinions, but stop bashing NITRO. Its fine that you don't like it, but you don't have rip it to shreds and compare it to other coasters b/c it is what it is and has its own unique layout, an out-&-back twister combo. Also steepness doesn't determine the overall quality of the drop, and its ignorant to say that it doesn't have airtime, b/c factually it does, it's called physics buddy.

Settle down there hoss. I wasn't bashing Nitro, I merely stated that I found it disappointing. I did not tell anyone not to ride it or say anything negative other than that I felt it was a little tame for a hypercoaster. I know plenty about physics, but I also know that I perceived very little in the way of air time on the coaster. If you feel more air than I do, great. I am glad you enjoy the coaster. I am also glad that I got to ride it, I just wish it was a little more "powerful." Excuse me for enjoying steep angles of descent. You might enjoy them too if you tried MF and SORS. No I am not comparing them to Nitro. I am merely stating that I have come to enjoy that style of coaster. If you don't then good for you. Did they staple you when you rode Nitro and,did you ride the right side end seat? The very first time i rode Nitro i have to admitt,i was dissapointed that i felt pretty much no air time but,the second time i made sure they did not staple me down in my seat and was pleasantly suprised.
I will admitt it is extremely smooth but,as long as i relaxed my body and left some room to breathe in my seat i did feel the ejector air and was jerked forward over the hills.Sitting on the outside right seat was incredible on the overbanked turns.It was almost as though i could fall out if i leaned over anymore then i was already leaning.
To each their own though and one thing is,if it's not your homepark the coaster resides in then,you don't get to experience the coaster in differant ways such as,seating,air temperature and,there has been variences to the degree of which they use the block brakes before the final three camelbacks.Last time i rode they were on pretty strong but,the time before that the barely used them.
