Worst Coaster Crash?

The crash of the Beast on or around October 14 last year may very well be the BEST crash that ever happened. I'll let you know what I think of the new braking system when I ride it.

-----------------
I get the feeling there's a conspiracy over at King's Island to remove anything that has "K" or "C" in its initials.

4 people died on the Big Dipper at Battersea, It used very open cars, similar to the old scenic railway ones, and this incident lead to the introduction of many lifthill rollback devices. (I have VHS footage of the news report from the scene.- not that I get off on this kind of stuff I would like to add) There was a right hand turn just after the station, before the lift, as the cable broke, the train went backwards and derailed on the corner, throwing the passengers at the back of the train against the station, and crushing them under the rest of the train still coming down the lift. One of the passengers who was at the front was uninjured, and was interviewed for the report.

Roller coaster accidents in the 1920's were more prevalent and deaths were not that uncommon before under friction wheel and bars became the standard. I would imagen coaster accidents back then were more serious then anything we can drum up on the much safer rides riding the rails today. Be interesting if someone hd some ancient coaster accident reports, on maybe the Crystal Beach Cyclone that certainly earned a reputation.

My bad...it was the Mindbender accident that I was thinking of.. Edmonton Mall. Thanks for setting me straight!

-----------------
I'd rather die living than live like I'm dead

Was the Mindbender accident due to the wheel assembly? because I thought I it was due to the body seperating from the chassis. Just trying to clear things up, not nitpicking. Seems to me there was something wrong with the bolts used or they were the wrong hardness.

i'll have to represent my park by adding our worse crash. On july 18 of 1992 the two hercules trains collided around the transfer area before the station....the first train was realeased but for unknown reasons the second train would not enter the station....then too make things worse there was a compter error which cleared the block the stuck train was in. the first train went over the hill and completed the cycle. the trains collided at abouut 30 mph....destroying parts of the station and leaveing the trains in need of repair. fourteen riders were taken to the hospital, luckly there were no deaths. it was a bad crash but at least we got some halloween decorations out of it....part of the train that collided is used as a decoration for the hallow weekends...its located by the joker near some gravestones and full of ghost riders

-----------------
Anyone for any orgy in the snoopy bounce?

NoClueWhy, there was another benefit to that crash assuming that was indeed the incident that led to the purchase of new trains...

The old train was trailered. The current trains are not. PTC's trailered trains were lousy to begin with.

I think that's just an urban legend, much like the girl who got her face ripped off by Power Tower.

SFEG awaits The Flying Coaster-coming in 2002!

Accidents at Carowinds:

1)A few years ago (before it was turned backwards I believe) on side of Thunder Road's brake run failed causing the train to collide with another train is the station, injuring 7, some severly.

2)Several people were sent to the hospital after inhaling fumes from chemical in the parks lazy river. (last year)

3) Many years a ago, teenagers in the woods about a mile away from Carowinds were shooting off guns. One bullet hit a tree and ricocheted, hitting a girl who was in the wave pool in the head. She was rushed to the hospital where she died.

800,000 years in 7 seconds: Time Machine the movie or next S&S creation?

I do not know about "shot out of Lightin' Loops" but a woman was killed on the ride when it was launched and she was not secured in, I believe there was a Popular Mechanics article on it circa 1987/88.

For me the rumors come in afterwards. I have heard that SF switched to the bright orange OTSRs after this, but have never seen it documented or traced to a credible source.

Didn't somebody die on The Giant Drop in SFGAm a long time ago? Could be an urban legend. God I hope it is.

A girl was thrown from the Timber Wolf at World's of Fun. It was definitely rider error though. The girl was apparently climbing from seat to seat when she was thrown out. Unfortunately Timber Wolf was altered after the incident. Orient Express has also had its fair share of mechanical problems.

-----------------

I remember someone died on the Whizzer at PGA. The engine failed on the spiral part going up, and the train ended up going backwards while the other car was coming up the spiral.

Now this may be a stupid rumor, but I have heard people saying that PGA refuses to build on the site where the Whizzer once stood because it is haunted. That is the most prime, logical stretch of land in the park, and they have never used it again. Makes you wonder, huh? Hmm...

The Lightnin Loops death was 8/16/81. The accidnet was well documented. The woman was thrown from the train. It is believed that her restraint may have not been properly latched.
I remember a long time ago hearing that someone working in the park at Opryland was struck and killed by the Rock N' Roller Coaster's (maybe when it was still called the Timber Topper) train.

No it was the wheel assembly. Something about poor maintenance because the manuals were in German and the mechnaics couldn't read them.

About Carowinds, I have never heard of the 3rd thing you mentioned... a mile away? Isn't that pretty far? The only things I know of is Thunder Roads brakes failing and the Lazy River thing. Well the park is 30 years old and no one has died there so thats good!

(And if the 3rd thing is true it doesn't count!)
