Imagine if we had the discipline of New Zealand early on combined with a unified vaccination commitment. We would be done with this already.

I have wondered about that. Would we be done with it if it continues to spin around in the world? No doubt we would be in a better situation with deaths and hospitalizations, but the vaccinated continue to be testing positive. Granted the seriousness of those cases is greatly diminished, but I am starting to wonder how long it is going to take the virus to mutate to something that does an end around the vaccine. Can a country declare victory until the world can?
If fewer people have it in the first place, there are fewer opportunities to carry infection. Breakthrough infections were expected, and they're actually lower than what the vaccine trials predicted. But yes, certainly with it running unconstrained elsewhere, there's risk of mutation that creates something that could be vaccine resistant, and that would be bad.
