From the blog post:

Strike up the band because we’ve saved a seat for you on this musical journey with Tiana and friends! The name of the new attraction evolving from the reimagining of Splash Mountain was announced today during ESSENCE Fest in New Orleans: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The all-new adventure which will bring guests into the world of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film “The Princess and the Frog” like never before is coming to Magic Kingdom in Florida and Disneyland park in California in late 2024.

What's interesting about no movie tie-in at all is the same idea for a ride that was to be built back in the early 1970s. There were originally no plans to build a POC at the Florida park, but to construct a similar attraction with a wild west theme: Western River Expedition

If y'all bring up Walt's grave movement

I'm pretty sure that happened when they released a cartoon with an African-American princess.

Touchdown:

They seem gun hoe on

I've already done "wenches," don't make me hunt down a picture of gun hoes.

I know I'll probably have to turn in my fan club card after this, but I don't get the extreme adoration for Splash Mountain. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun ride that I enjoyed when we've taken the time to ride. But I don't get why changing the theme and the story has some so upset. My first thought when I saw the story referenced earlier in the thread was, "There's a story?"

Edit: I stewed on this post for a couple of days before going through with it because I know damn well this could be my "dopey turtle show" moment.

I'm right there with you. I couldn't tell you what the story is.

As far as Disney dark rides stories goes it couldn't be more clear to me. The rabbit is mischievous and takes things too far in searching for the laughing place. He gets caught by the bear and fox and escapes.

But does the story really matter when you have that earworm of a song?

The only thing I consistently remember about that ride is a bear butt in a tree, the river boat ending, and getting stuck next to that damn waterfall when the boats stack up. Also the smell, which reminds me of a rec center pool when I was a kid.

As proven by Tower of Terror, which was overlaid for Guardians out in California, I don't think the theme matters when you have a good ride. Few would argue that Splash isn't one of the best log flumes ever made. The theme is less important than the experience.

Take away the pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean and you have a pretty lame ride.

But enough about Na'vi River Journey.

Yeah Pirates without Pirates still has a drop, so still better then Navi.

I had one of those huge Disney storybooks when I was a kid, and De Tar Baby was one of my favorite stories in it. Little did I know how infamously racist it would be perceived. It's the story of Brear Bear and Brear Fox trapping Brear Rabbit in black tar and then throwing him in the briar patch.

Little Travis had no idea...

I think most of the perceived racism in the story was how Uncle Remus spoke in the story. The entire story had a stereotypical dialect. "And Brear Fox and Brear Bear? Dey lay low in de bushes."

And the pictures in the story of Brear Rabbit, who had white fur, covered in tar did look an awful lot like Black face.

It was a clever and funny story, but nowadays, I can totally see how it would be offensive to people of color. There is a fine line between making fun of POC, and writing funny POC characters. I'm not sure a white guy like me could be an authority on the difference without better understanding of the issues Black people have faced over the decades.

About the Slash Mountain, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason this is happening is because Disney had a few complaints about the story over the years. It would be amazing if Disney tried to reboot the franchise in a more thoughtful way, and keep the ride how it is. Who doesn't like singing animals?

I'm sure they already considered that though, and came to the conclusion that this is the best way to resolve the issue. A more sensitive reboot is probably impossible.

About the Slash Mountain

Na'vi River might just be the most disappointing Disney attraction I've ever experienced. No, not might. It was without question the most disappointing.

My first time riding I kept assuming it hadn't actually started yet. We were bumping boats and nothing had happened yet so I figured we were coming up to a block where the ride would really get going. Nope. It was just the station.

Maybe it's because I've never waited for the ride (30 minutes is way too long and it's usually 60+), but I've found it to be perfectly enjoyable. A quiet, peaceful boat ride with a cool animatronic at the end. For a Lightning Lane selection in a park without a lot of rides that need one, it's perfectly fine.

Having never seen the movie, it completely lack context. And a story. 😂

“I know I'll probably have to turn in my fan club card after this, but I don't get the extreme adoration for Splash Mountain.”

if Disney decided to rearranged a bathroom in ‘Mickeys Toon Town’ at least one fan would scream about it.

Do you not like log flumes? Because WDW Splash Mountain has 4 drops, including a rare roller coaster drop. It is in my opinion (even without theming) the greatest flume in the US.

For reference, my top 5:

  1. WDW Splash
  2. Timber Mountain Log Flume (Knotts)
  3. Dudley Do Right
  4. Paul Bunyan Log Flume (MoA)
  5. DL Splash

Like I said, the ride is fun. The theme and story just contribute very little.

Today is the last day for Splash. Whether you are on the "Walt is rolling in his grave" side of the Splash Mountain to Bayou Adventure conversion or the "Nobody even knows the storyline, who cares?" camp, I can't remember a last day for any attraction drawing crowds like this

200 Minute Wait

Closing Day Rope Drop

I got my last ride Thursday night. I'll miss it more than I thought I would.
