The real "What is Holiday World up to?" thread

Great! I could try to explain those other photos again, but I think Paula will settle this one soon. Either way, Good Luck! :)

I for one am not betting on this. It is worse than betting at a casino.

I can definitely see where it might be either steel or wood supported. Who knows....maybe it isnt a coaster after all. Maybe it is steel supports for a new waterslide.

Personally I think it is a coaster. But what it will do is anyone's guess. *** Edited 5/4/2005 5:36:52 PM UTC by beast7369***

Anyone's guess? Ray Charles could guess this one! Right now!

My guess...."Over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house we go..."! Well at least I have the through the woods part right.
A new Big Bad Wolf coaster ;) I like the idea!!!! Lift hill over a river (or stream) and then terrain coaster through woods :) Is Big Bad Wolf trademarked by Busch for coasters?

Watch the tram car please....
IMHO, seeing what Im seeing, Id say steel supports.

Don't worry, They have the track men to handle it.

Chuck, who has only consistantly seen IB's coasters run well with the steel frames.

Why would metal pieces for a steel framed woodie be delivered so early. Wouldn't all the steel come at once? I'm leaning towards a "wooden" woodie.
The bents on a steel framed woodie bend length-wise for support. These are flat length-wise to butt up against wood. You can see some supports like the longer HW braces in this pic above the steel bridge: http://www.rcdb.com/ig584.htm?picture=7 The flat connectors for steel supports that I have seen are all much wider than those and are square shaped. Any long pieces are bent length-wise for support. A flat one that just braces bolts in wood does not need to be bent for support because the wood is the support. In addition, those small bents in the barrel only have a hole in one side. I have only seen them in one place, and I posted that link earlier. They only have a hole for a bolt in one side because a bolt going thru the other side would hit a bolt going perpendicular to it in the support it attaches to. That can only happen in a wood support structure where the support has some thickness in it to hold the perpendicular bolt. I hope that makes sense to someone. I could explain it better in person pointing to pics, but it is kinda hard in a post. *** Edited 5/4/2005 7:23:55 PM UTC by RavenTTD***
Okay...but as for as those stacks of slender, steel supports?

NOTE: Severe fecal impaction may render the above words highly debatable.

Those are the first ones I talked about. The are only bent on the end, not length wise...and they are 2 bold holes wide. Those are the ones you can find in that SOB pic.

edit: unless you are talking about that small stack of really long supports. My guess would be steel supports for a bridge, but I can't see them that well.

edit2: Besides, this may sound dumb, but Paula is giving it away. The title is "Brace yourself". These are braces, not supports, and I have seen braces like these on wood coasters, but I have looked at all the steel support photos I can find at rcdb and other sites and I cannot find them bracing or supporting any steel supports. They just look different. *** Edited 5/4/2005 7:52:35 PM UTC by RavenTTD***

SOB's steel crossbeams came far late in the construction. It's one reason the lifthill took so long to complete.

There is very little in SOB's construction I would compare to any other wooden coaster out there.

I beams and occationally big 4X6's are generally used in crossover sections

That stack to me looks like several layers of angle iron all tucked into each other.

Chuck

I was not talking about the I beams, but right above it. There are "L" shaped braces with a "L" at the end and then about 2-3 feet long with bolts in them. They are vertical in the SoB pic. Those are what I think are in the second HW pic. I really cannot see the top HW pic that well, but the other two are braces for a wood support structure. Hopefully someone in the HW area *cough*Paul*caugh* can get some close ups for us soon.

Well there is a reason why we have not seen any close up yet. I am sure that these are to just wet our appetite. Speaking of appetite I found today's HoliBlog entry truly appetizing. I am hungry now.
Yeah, What other park displays every eatery, full menues and prices of their lineup?

Chuck, who's usually in sticker shock once he enters a park and wants something.

So Chuck ... are you most looking forward to our fudge? Or are you still hung up on the Free Unlimited Stew idea? :)

Paula, That was another time on another board. Free Fudge is always welcome though :)

Stew away,

I think this may help RavenTTD:

Look underneath the ledgers that support the track. They used angle iron for this purpose. Legend has many of these throughout its course. It would make sense because all the things in those pictures are used to support ledgers; such as the early construction photo of Legend from earlier in the thread.

Here is another photo of Legend showing the angle iron underneath the ledgers:

I think it will be an all wood coaster knowing Holiday World, but I could be in for a surprise!

EDIT: Even an added bonus in that second picture... look back at about the 4th ledger, underneath it looks like it could be something similar to what's in the pizza sauce containers! *** Edited 5/5/2005 12:34:34 AM UTC by Cory Patrick*** *** Edited 5/5/2005 12:39:36 AM UTC by Cory Patrick***

IB's coasters are great. They used steel out of necessity. A wood structure wouldn't have fit as well. I'd say that Cliff's had the same idea.

HW might actually be able to take out fewer trees with a steel structure. I think we'll see more and more steel structured wooden tracked coaster as time progresses. I don't think they look as nice, but at the same time they have many benefits and make good sense.
