Stupid e-mail tricks

Mamoosh's avatar

Jeff - I never, ever said it [making generalizations or stereotyping people] was right, as evidenced by the second part of that paragraph ["Hopefully most of us are self-aware enough to realize what we've done and realize there are always exceptions to the rule"].

Please do not quote me out of context.

IMHO, I think stereotypes and generalizations are an automatic thing. For instance, when I saw the e-mail that Jeff posted, the first thing that came to mind was that it was written by a younger person. Was that because I knew it was a younger person? No. I am 24 years old and I have much better grammar than a lot of older people I know. But, people are aware that younger people, as a whole, do not always have the best grammar and sentence structure. Since they know that, on some unconscious level, when seeing something like that e-mail, the first thing that comes to mind is that it was written by someone younger. It is just like those word tests where someone says a word or shows you a picture and you are then asked to say the first thing that comes to your mind. You can't really control that because it is a reflex triggered by whatever is shown or stated. It is not always the best thing that is thought of but being a reflex, you aren't thinking about it.
You know, it's still how he wrote the letter, but also mostly what he said. Just not believable. Teens came into this with CoasterDad's genalization and should be left out. You all say that the odds aren't high at all that this could be an adult, but there is always that odd one out. When does this give us the right to infer that it was a teen?

I didn't say I inferred it was a teen. It could have very well been an adult. Track record though makes it appear to be written by a younger person though. If you take away stereotypes and generalizations, it is just an email by someone with poor sentence structure and grammar. Of course, the actual substance of the email does not seem to be of a reliable source. But, since generalizations and stereotypes are all around, it is kind of hard not to think about them. They affect the decision that someone makes. It's like car insurance. Why do teenage males pay more than teenage females? Simply put, past records have shown that they get into more traffic accidents than females and the insurance companies form generalizations and apply them to ALL teenage guys, regardless of a good record. They must prove otherwise before they are given a break.

On a side note, it is my opinion that this thread should be closed so we don't run the risk of having a big age and stereotype debate.

Childish behaviour

Hmmmmmm?
I wonder what the meaning behind that expression is? To me it seems like it is based on some precedent.

If they was going to be involved in a "laesuit" as they put it, why did they even bfing it up, and i like that "X-type ride" thing also.

The lawsuit excuse is just a way to cover his/her ass because the pics of the 4-D simply do not exist. If a person was to show Jeff a picture in confidence [and I know Jeff would keep it in confidence] how would that get the author involved in a lawsuit? No one would know except the author and Jeff.

Its pure fiction.

God people, shut the hell up with this generalization crap. Just post some more funny emails so I can laugh my ass off as I did when I read the email...;)

'Moosh, how dare you besmirch the name of good fiction like that, LOL. The e-mail was pure, but it was BS....fiction is better than that....;). Sorry, just got done reading another Vonnegut, and THAT is "pure fiction"....and yummy, too!

Light-speed to Tralfamadore, don't stop for the asteroid belt....

PlayerPunk:

You said "he", are you saying that all males are prone to emails like the one excerpted? I don't think so, but one could see your comment as a generalization.

Time to remove the chip from your shoulder and move on.

Yeah! No one seemed to notice that I avoided pronouns whenever I could or simply said "he/she" so as not to assume the author was male. Of course we all really know it was a typical male teenager...LOL!

'Gator - you're right...BS is a better description ;-)

Man, that guy is a real coaster lover notice he said "X- type ride not an arrow 4-d prototype.
Mamoosh's avatar

Maybe because the Arrow 4-D prototype has already been built? Only the first in a series is a prototype.

I think you all need to loosen up!

CoasterDad, yes PlayerPunk said he...I forget what the percentage of the members here at CB are male, but I know it's high. I remember, as a matter of fact, Jeff referring to Coaster Events as "sausage fests". LOL

redman822 - we ALL need to loosen up? Isn't that a generalization?

Don't worry Vipper, I wasn't referring to you.

CoasterDad - It was an honest mistake and if I knew by your screen name you weren't a dad, I would guess that you were some nitpicky teenager.

Once again, here's another generalization that I falsely made. I guessed it was a guy just because it seems that the majority of coaster enthusiasts are males. I am male, and I also made that generalization because if there is one thing women like to do, it's make it look neat. Not some thrown together mess with a bunch of spelling errors and capatilization mistakes. That still doesn't mean that it wasn't a female. Actually, now it is safe to say that we know absolutely nothing about this mystery writer.

I'll stop making generalizations, if everyone else does.

Is this why Jeff didn't post my e-mail about the Launched Stand-up Terra 4-D woodie at Six Flags Magic Mountain?
