Stupid e-mail tricks

Welcome to the real world. People can and will make inferences from most anything you say or do. For example, Jeff posts about an absurd email. Mamoosh makes comments about "that child" and I follow-up with my level of enjoyment from such posts.

We inferred teen; you inferred that I was making a "generalization". I was teen (as we all were or will be), I have been around teens, I am the parent of 4 teens, and my wife is an adolescent mental health counselor. While I would never purport to be an expert on teen behavior, I will say that I am more aware than "your average bear".

The email came from someone who displays the spelling, grammar, sentance structure, and thought process of the "typical" teen or pre-teen. Could it have come from a 40 year old? Sure, but its not likely.

Frankly the part of the email that gives it away is the last complete sentence: "i can confirm all of this because i have pictures of the first ride and i can't show the pictures to you because i will get involved in a laesuit."

I'll forgive the spelling error as "w" and "e" are right next to each other on a keyboard. But its the logic that if the person merely shows the pics to Jeff that he/she will be sued that doesn't make sense [and seems awfully convenient IMHO]. How would just showing the pics to Jeff get this person involved in a lawsuit? How would those who would sue this person even know that Jeff has seen them?

Sorry if generalizations about teenagers coming from us older folk have pissed some of you off. But generalizations exist because at times - not ALWAYS - but at times, they're true. If you're a teenager that doesn't fit into that generaliztion I congratulate you.

Just cuz u "adults" thingk ur so dam smart, that duzn't meen skwat!

Seiously, some of our more well-thought, insightful posts come from some of our teen posters. When it's hard to *guess* the age or maturity of a poster, that's a good thing. Those teens who post "wisdom and intellect" here, some quite frequently, ARE to be commended.....But I *thingk* they KNOW who they are already! When the "older" folks around here *bash* on assumed teenagers, please don't take it personally if it doesn't apply to you.....we're just jealous that you all have 20 years on us....and to those whose posts are immediately "ridiculed", please just TRY to meet us halfway and post with SOME degree of attention to spelling (not Aaron Spelling), grammar, and well be sure to try and meet you at the *midway* point.....

My god, 'Gator...I thought you were, like, in your 30's but I can tell by that last post of yours that I was, like, totally wrong. Are you, like, 13 years old? Or what?

Well 'moosh (and other "old" people)....we really aren't s'posed to share this information, but I guess it's OK to tell. Ponce De Leon was RIGHT, the Fountain of 'U'th is really here in the Sunshine State. Where specifically is the location of this Spring...that, I cannot divulge. But I'm still getting "carded"!

I do think that you made a pretty lame generalization, CoasterDad64. If you did not intend to generalize, you should not have made the post you did, because it sure looks like a generalization to me.

And no one ever makes 200 posts in a week... we have quotas for those people.

Really, it's not about the age of the poster, it's their maturity level. And from just my one year on CB, I've seen 30+ yr old members that type silly and redundant posts. (I imagine that the mods have seen much more, though.) Not just here but in real life, it's about maturity level. I've surprised the hell out of people when I tell them I'm only 16. (I've also fooled some people by saying I'm a freshmen in college!)

If you weren't expecting comments, generalized or not, why make the post at all. Given the high likelihood of comments, cohesive and not so cohesive, what did you expect?

I will agree that there are plenty of younger members who make well thought out, informative, and entertaining posts. They, however, are the minority.

I'll give you the exaggerated post numbers, however, you'll have to admit that here are plenty of folks who "litter" the forums with posts, all within a few days of signing up.

It does not appear that I am alone in my opinion, but even if I am, so be it. I provided credible examples, and for that matter, your original post may have as well.

On the other hand, I do sympathize with you regarding the quantity and quality of the email you receive. To make another generalization, it's the price paid for being the high profile owner/host of a high traffic site. Based on comments you made in another post, you show considerable restraint.

I really don't see what the big fuss it all about. As humans we make generalizations and assign stereotypes all the time, sometimes even without realizing it. The reason we do so it twofold: 1] its human nature, and 2] because while not all of a certain type of people fit those characteristics *some* do. That's why the generalizations and stereotypes exist. I don't get upset every time I see a gay man portrayed on TV as being "nelly" or promiscuous because some gay men *are* that way. I'm not, but so what? Those who know me know the real me and that's all that matters. I'm Polish but Polock jokes don't make me angry because I don't consider myself dumb.

I'm not condoning putting people into categories and assigning stereotypes, I'm merely stating that it's part of our nature to do so. Hopefully most of us are also self-aware enough to realize what we've done and realize there are always exceptions to the rule.

If someone like MiLLeNNiUMRiDeR [and I use him only as an example] knows he isn't the stereotypical 16 year old, and his friends and family know it as well, why get all bent out of shape when someone mentions those characterists?

I don't believe that CDad64, myself, or others are denying the fact that there are people under 18 who are wise and mature beyond their years just as there are some over 18 who are immature. I've known and do know people who fit into all those categories.

But I don't believe one can deny that for MOST people [but not ALL people] maturity comes with age. Considering the odds I made my assumption that the author was in his/her teens - well, I first said "child"...admittedly that was perhaps a bit harsh.

However I think we can all agree on one thing: whomever wrote that most likely doesn't have pics of Arrow 4-D parts laying about SFGAm! LOL!

As if jeff didn't know that they were getting a 4-d already ha he knew that months in advance of course he couldn't say anything or he would get involved in a laesuit. ;)

I always knew laesuits would come back in style...I think they're still one *in the closet* somewhere...LMAO. So happy we live in more "enlightened" times, even though there's still a LOT of work to be done....

bill, happy to know those 4-d pics aren't from SFGAM, but from my very own back yard.....:)....Frank DeCaro's #1 fan....now back to you, Jon. Psssst, 'moosh....The reason that the gay men on TV are "nelly queens" is 'cause we watch Comedy Central, and they're just more FUN!

I've noticed this creeping up on the board in the last couple weeks. Yes, someone made a dumb, funny email. Oh, well get over it. I honestly don't know what is worse, the email or the intense conversation around it. Are we that far into the off season all ready? I appreciate a good laugh, and Jeff provided one. I'll be moving on to reading actuall information.

Would you be so kind to give the members name so we can ever so kindly make fun of this certain person?

That is, if you know who it is.

It's human nature to do a lot of things, but that never makes them automatically right.

Mamoosh, please. Be reasonable here. At one point you stated that that post was written in the "typical" teenage style. Well, I know that no one I know now or knew in high school would write a post like that. No one. So, while this almost certainly the work of a teenager (yeah, I really don't know what other age group could have a sofisticated thought like "laesuit," and articulate it so horribly), please don't think it is the work of a "typical" one.
