SoCal paper talks more about Magic Mountain coasters

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Not revealing anything new, but certainly helping to solidify the announcement, the LA Times talks about the three new coasters coming to Six Flags Magic Mountain for 2001. The article quotes Ultimate Rollercoaster Web jockey Eric Gieszl.

That's right Todd, SFMM DOES have Quantity (15, deal with it) AND Quality, like you said.

And for the last time, Deja Vu is not a standard boomerang, look at the stats. Personally, I am looking foreward to it as much as "X." It is a new, and never before seen ride that is based on the old boomerang design. If it was comming to your homepark, I have a feeling you woild be excited about it.

"X" marks the spot in 2001!
How can someone justify comparing parks by amount of investment???? The Steel Dragon in japan cost over $50 million in one season which would throw the scale way off, does that mean you rate the coasters at that park above CP or SFMM ??? We riders make the difference between one park and another. The more we ride, the more we attend, the more money the park makes, the better rides they build with the money. The decisions of the park owners and management and designers also figure into the play, so a blind assessment based on money and titles is ridiculous. A business making the type of money like Cedar Fair, L.P. or Six Flags has to be doing some pretty good decision making so far in the past despite any complaints we all may have had.
About what Duke said, and going along with counting racing coaster as 2, does SFMM count Colossus as 2?
Colossus is not counted as 2. But if CP wanted to be an idiot, MM could count STE as 2 coasters and Colossus as 2 coasters. Will it happen? I dont think so. I dont think it realy matters who has the most coasters. I love to see new coasters built. It just happens to be easier if they are closer to where I live. :)
Its hillarious, we're bickering about which park is better. Its not like you have to go to SFMM, or bettre yet go to both SFMM and CP and have a blast. There's no need to politicalize this issue.

You build it, I'll ride it
I think SF should invest some of their money in Elitch Gardens. (commence arguing)

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING!

About 3-5 years ago we all were pretty dang lucky to get a new major ride on an average of every 2-4 years, and now parks are building 2-3 and even 4 at a time in one single year, or 1 each year.

So I am going to sit back right now, not caring who has this many and why, but I am going to thank my lucky stars that we have parks giving us these wonderful rides.

We should all be VERY greatful that we were born during this revolutionary time for amusement parks, so lets all give thanks to the parks that bring us what we love

Heres to you Amusement Parks of the World!!!!

Thank you Randy... My opinion stands...

WHO CARES?

It's not religion, folks. Who gives two monkey craps if park A has more coasters than park B, or more water fountains, or bigger french fry servings. We all have parks we love and if they were all in our backyard, we'd be tickled to death that one park is putting in that many rides. I might not care much for SFO from an operational standpoint, but you can bet I was pleased they put it in three world-class coasters last year in my backyard.

Can you just imagine what a non-enthusiast would say if they read these recent threads? I'm pretty sure it would be something along the lines of, "Get a life!"

Well said, as always.
I dont get it. I actually thought from lets say the last 5 or 6 months that we here at coasterbuzz were above this bickering of senseless records. But all it takes is a park to supposedly outdo CP in just 1 category and the immature statements start flying around. Just like Jeff said about the non-enthusiasts and what they would say if they read all of this (GET A LIFE!!!) they would look at us like we needed professional help. To make things even worse is that its the off-season (Most parks are closed). They would also be saying go find a winter hobby and get off the coaster kick for 6 months.

On a side note, I am perfectly content with 11 coasters at SFGAm in 2001. I dont care if other parks have 50 coasters. I am content.

"DONT FIGHT IT, RIDE IT",,,,RAGING BULL
But your two new rides are shuttles so they're not really coasters!!! LOL!

Todd I have to disagree with you on your claim of quality coasters at SFMM.
"Golitah, Riddler's Revenge, Superman The Escape, Viper, Batman The Ride, Reveloution, and Colosus "

Out of the ones that you listed, I'll give you Goliath, RR, and maybe Viper. BUT you have to face it that B:TR and Collossus really aren't all that great. If B&M were to make me choose between a clone of Raptor or B:TR, I'd take the Raptor clone. B:TR just isn't intense. Now for S:TE (which I still don't think is a coaster, but we aren't going to start that fight), is still a one trick pony. You go up, you go down. I think that after you ride it say 10 times you end up getting bored very easily with it. I'd take a ride on Goliath any day over S:TE.

-----------WILDFIRE--------------
Scorching the Competition in 2001
----------------------------------

Wildfire will beat ANY coaster that SFMM is adding in 2001! :)
But still no official word from SFMM yet. What will they do?

Do they intend to ladle out the overhyped, extra-millions-to-the-actual-cost, extra-inversions-where-you-know-they're-aren't-any-more tripe we've endured when sister parks have built SLCs and B:TR clones?

Or will they chose the high road and accentuate the positive--of which there should be plenty?

How heavily do they intend to hype the coaster count when, in all truth, CP is still only one cheap to buy, quick to build, family accessible Vekoma suspended coaster away from their own crown? Just one nice, shiny, complementary-to-Camp-Snoopy, candy colored Vekoma kiddie suspended away?

Okay--how about a kid-sized woodie in Frontier town instead?

Am I giving off some sort of subliminal signal here?

(who was nice to SFMM fans when their 'biggest and fastest' Goliath dreams were crushed...ask anybody on URC)
That will be interesting to see, how SFMM plays this to the media tommorrow. My guess is the'll go all out with this thing. If CP takes back the record next year, so be it. Other than us, who's going to really care? All LA locals will remember is SFMM calling themselves the extreme park with the most rollercoasters, and SFMM can(and will)milk that for years.

Reflections... Okay, So I'm amped about the new SFMM coasters as they're only two hours away. No I don't like what SFMM has done with regard to themes, nor do I like the security checkpoints and long lines.... However....I did a little math and for "X" to hit 78 MPH as claimed, this has to be a hyper. Also, from looking at the arrow video, if it is an arrow, it's a controlled spin which means you will likely experience a "falling" feeling goung down hill with the car somewhat tilted. Also, if it's from arrow and it's not a hyper, it could be a vertical drop to gain such speed. If it isn't, that sucker will be over the 200 foot mark. Magnum only hits 72. The super boomer, God I hope it's smooth, that's all I have to say on that one as the Knott's boomer has gotten a little rough with years, but it's much smoother than the old corkscrew it replaced.

Now, for those who say Knott's is no in competition you're right. They suck of visitors from Disney and LA in general, but now Disney and SFMM will have them beat and the only think left is for Knotts to answer. My guess is with a hyper and perhaps an inverted by Arrow or B&M. The Hyper location unknown but likely in Ghost Town and an inerted in the place of Boomerang and Windjammer.

This was a low capital expenditure yar for Cedar Fair, much lower (about half) than what was expected. This leaves quite a bit for next year and you can bet that Knott's is next for soemthing big.

Ths up side.... Expansion is out of control right now making life great for all of us. The downside, it will slow at somepoint which will pretty much suck. Could you imagine if we didnt have all of this to talk about today? Man, life would suck.

All I know is one thing: I couldn't have been more wrong about SFMM in 2001. I am happily eating my own words.

Matthew
I'm with you Skyboss! I'm just glad there is something else to talk about other than Talon construction updates. I have my fingers crossed that this is indeed an updated hypercoaster with trains that give the feeling of flying and inverting. How friggin awesome would that be? Probably too good to be true. I just hope it's not just a gimmick, one-note coaster. As for Knott's, I can only imagine what Cedar Fair will try to build now. A coaster close to MF in stats may not be such a pipe dream after all.

All i have to say is "quality not quantity".i live in Toledo Oh and there was a breif article in the newspaper today about this whole situation. I dont understand wat the big dealn is. WOW!!! MM will have 1 more coaster than CP. It seems to me that everybody has forgoten thathas THE BIGGEST, FASTEST, SMOOTHEST, AND MOST FAVORED DAMN COASTER IN THE COUNTRY!
that CP has*
POINT ONE:
I dont mean to hurt anyone's feelings, but if "Quality over Quantity" really was true, and if some of you who have just recently adopted that mantra really believed that, then wouldn't Holiday World, IOA or BGW be better parks than either CP or SFMM?

POINT TWO:
Wasn't CP only ahead of PKI by one (maybe two) coasters? Someone explain the difference to me.

And BTW: I have yet to hear (read) anybody, who has actually ridden both, say that Millenium Force was better than Superman: Ride of Steel (SFNE).
