SOB-possible to enjoy it?

Exactly Moosh, something a little more original please... AZRider, your point was made, then after that, you fell into a coma and made no sense, whatsoever. In fact, I'm waiting for one. New Mexico...what?

I love getting beat up on coasters, Hershey's Wildcat, ST, Mean Streak before they made it Tame Streak, now... the Beast, but SoB is just plain boring. Great first hill and helix on the front side, but after that, the coaster bores me to no end....Yeah, a loop in the middle (Yippee!), another helix, this one very lame, a couple of big drops with NO forces heading into the station. The hill out of the station is a nice touch, but what a waste of space for such a dominant looking structure. That's just it, it only looks dominanting......Yawn.

I agree with Vater, SoB was SOBBING & SoBERING at #38 out of the 45 woodies, I have ridden and if you check my list, there are a few outstanding, top 20 coasters on my list......which, in fact, you have no list.....would you like to "make" one up for us?!

There's nothing like a woodie...

I don't even dislike Vekoma Hang-n-Bangs, and, as I've attested several times over (Gonch can vouch), I love me some Togo. I somehow feel a certain satisfaction when I come off a brutally intense coaster."

I'm a closet Boomerang and SLC fan, too. In fact I have Great Nor-Easter firmly entrenched in my Top 10 steel coasters. And at the last CAC in 2003 I rode Tremors, another VERY intense wooden coaster, virtually non-stop for the last hour of ERT in the second-to-last row. I'm definitely NOT a wimp.

"That said...SoB was unbearably headsplitting. It was the one and only coaster I could not wait for to end. And even if it wasn't at all painful, it's one of the few coasters that I feel had remarkably lousy pacing. Yup, SoB is ranked 36 of 38 woodies in my list."

Or, maybe you're just a wimp, too? ;)

Y'know...I never thought of it that way! Could I be? Nahh, 'cause I'd ride again.

Wimp...no.

Stupid? Yes.

LOL Vater ;)
I am so pissed, I have not gotten to ride my #1 woodie yet this year! I get alot of air on the ride. It is no where painful.

Son of Beast is a classic!

OK...I was willing to accept that you enjoy the ride, but now I'm concerned you're on crack. Air? What air?...it's all curves!

Hi kids! You know that breeze you feel when your coaster train moves fast? That's wind, not the 'air' we talk about here.

Thanks much--and don't forget to brush!

"All I need is the AIR that I breathe..."

Now just TRY getting THAT outta your heads....muwahahaha! :)

Good point, peabody. There is no air on SOB. I was pretty much with him until that comment.
The drop out of the station has good air. The first drop, drop into the loop, the small hill out of the loop, then the final hill into the station. I am out of my seat like paul ruben was on the travel channel show where he was on Superman at darien lake on the last hill coming to the station on SoB. It is so intense you can't recall the air time!

It has the best start to a coaster period, you cannot dissagree about that. *** Edited 4/12/2005 8:10:24 PM UTC by Beast Tamer***

I've never really got any great airtime on SOB. I get a little on the big drop, but that's about it. It's not nearly as good of airtime as I originally expected. There are other places where SOB looks like it's going to deliver some air, but again I've never got any.

As far as best beginnig goes. I'm willing to bet that Hydra's opening will be a hit. But as far as wooden coasters go, I prefer the pre-lift tunnels of coasters such as the Big Dipper (SCBB) and Cyclone (Lakeside).

I'd agree that SOB has the best start of the 13 wooden coasters you've ridden. Best, period? Dude get back to us when you're better-travelled and have a lot more experience riding coasters. That's like claiming Vanilla ice cream is the best in the world when you have not tried any other flavors.

Even when I make my claim that Tremors has the best first drop sequence I always qualify it with "of the 90 wooden coasters I've ridden." I'm not foolish enough to claim its the best PERIOD because I have not ridden every wooden coaster in the world.

Moosh, thanks for the clarification. That's what I meant. Giant, big, giant, big, six in one hand, half dozen in the other.

I would also argue that every launched coaster has a better start than SOB. But if we are talking about coasters with lift hills I will agree with Moosh that SOB has the best pre lift sequence of the coasters that Beast Tamer has ridden.

LOL Inci...I totally misread your post and thought you were referring to a different big Dipper. That's what I get for ready so fast ;)
I always have trouble remembering if the dipper at SCBB is 'Giant' or just 'Big'. In fact I had to look it up on rcdb just a minute ago to be 100% sure.

Either way, I love the pre-lift tunnel. This is a classic coaster element that I would love to see on some modern woodies. Speaking of which, does any of the CCI, GCI, GG, S&S or any other modern coasters have a subterranean pre-lift tunnel?

LOL!! That's the funniest thing I've seen posted here in a long time. Seriously, good job.

Maybe you're confusing airtime with light-headedness due to repeated concussions?

Actually, I think it has the best ending of any coaster I've ridden. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see the station approaching.

For my money, Thunderbolt at Kennywood has a pretty nice start going for it. Gotta love West Penna terrain.

UBR: Not to mention first-season downtime that rivaled coasters with more ground-breaking features than a lift hill and chain...

You are all wimps and wusses!

I really dont get all the *ire* that Sonny sparks in so many of you. I personally thought it was fantastic. Okay, the floorboards in the trains suck ass, but I never found the ride to be "rough". It certainly isnt glass smooth, but very *very* few coasters in general, and no woodies that I've ridden in particular, fit that description. I really dont get it.

And to be perfectly honest, as I've said before, I think airtime is overrated. Sure, it nice to have in spots, but I think that y'all put way too much emphasis on it. I like when I can feel a coaster *doing* something to me. Otherwise, I might as well be on Amtrak (see all of Poppa Beast before the ending helix).

But hey, I really liked Hercules too! ;)
