Six Flags Fiesta Texas announces single-rail Wonder Woman Golden Lasso roller coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags announced today that Wonder Woman Golden Lasso Coaster will open next spring at its Fiesta Texas location in San Antonio. Instead of riding a set of two rails like traditional coasters, its narrow trains would soar along one 15.5-inch-wide steel track. It will be the world's first single-rail coaster.

I pictured these things going to much smaller parks than this (Michigan's Adventure, Fun Spot, Indiana Beach type of places).

While not as small as those parks, it is one of the smaller Six Flags parks at 200 acres and, despite being in a big tourism area, it's not in a major metro area. I would imagine their attendance trails behind parks with a similar season like Arlington and Georgia.

Isn't Fiesta Texas still in San Antonio? And isn't it still the 7th most populated city in the US?
No major metro area there, right? Or am I wrong?

When I was there it was a rather large metro area but that was like 4 or 5 years ago.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

I guess no one on this site has ever ridden a wild mouse coaster because it only sits 4 people per car? Give me a break with the capacity crap, hopefully everyone feels like you people so there will be no line at all. Is Maverick at CP a 5min wait and they run 6 trains, when was the last time TTD was a walk on? The joker at SFNE has low capacity and that line moves pretty fast every time i have been there. How about the capacity on the new premier launch coasters like tempesto or phobia that run 1 train, or Lightning rod that only runs one train when its open which is about 20% of the time?

Easy there. Is your point that capacity doesn't matter at all and people will just put up with whatever line there is (as in the case of Maverick)? Or that the ride will have low demand (as in the case of a mouse)? Or that it will have a lot of downtime (as in the cast of Lightning Rod)? Or are you just naming rides with long lines with no coherent argument?

A lot of San Antonians have melted since then.

Probably.

There's a coaster at Knoebels that hold 6 kids or 3 guys of any size. But it's a smaller park in a much smaller,... ok no metro area at all.

I wonder if they'll have VR on it?

Bad wording on my part. Relative to several other SF parks (OT, MM, OG, GAm, GAdv, SFA for example), FT is in a smaller metro area. Depending on the source, San Antonio checks in outside of the top 20 and the others are all in the top 10.

If they dispatch every 40 seconds, this has a capacity of 720 per hour, but we all know Six Flags won't do that.

Hey, let's ride (random Intamin coaster). What? It's broken down? I totally didn't expect that.

I understand, bigboy. I live in the 14th largest city in the US, but our city is very large in area, hence the huge pop. Our "metro area" is small compared to some in the state, we are only third in the state and 33rd in the nation with a little over 2 mil. The city itself takes close to 900,000 of that, the second largest Midwest city after Chicago. (We go back and forth with our good sister Indianapolis) Our metro population includes ten counties and 8 other cities.

I just think it's weird when it happens that way. San Antonio is probably in a similar situation.
And in Columbus we split our visits between CP and KI, happy to represent!

I think GamerGuy has a valid point. There are plenty of coasters being built with low capacity. And there aren't riots happening in Wild mouse Lines. But I would suggest those rides have lower appeal to the masses. I guess it goes back to my point about what do people think this ride is and how will they respond to it? That's yet to be seen.

This isn't a Fury caliber ride- but imagine if that ride had 8 passenger trains.

Operations matters with low capacity coasters or long lines. They keep the line moving, making for a better guest experience. 6 Flags does not have good operations. Waiting in a line that doesn't move is pretty miserable and typical at 6 Flags parks that have a crowd......

Six flags doesn't care about capacity (obviously). All they care about is the fact that this price point allows them to add a caliber of coaster that they otherwise would have to wait a few years to add. It's all about foot traffic at the gate.

The best of all the jokers is clearly Mark Hamill.

It's not obvious that they should care about capacity. I think they should,
but I am not the aveage guest and I definitely don't have access to numbers.

So Jill asked last night "what's new in the coaster world?" and I told her about this ride, "single-rail."

Her response: "What about Blackpool's Steeplechase?" Point, Jill.

Then we discussed the Setpoint rides (P-Flyers, Super Saturators), and the Caripro Batflyers.

I guess the reality is that this will be the first *GOOD thrill ride* on a single-rail - I've consistently heard that Meteor coaster was an abomination.

You still have Zoidberg.... You ALL have Zoidberg! (V) (;,,;) (V)

I wonder if Cedar Fair will reap the same criticism in about a week when they announce a similar ride at one of their parks?

Not the first. This is a Mack single rail that traveled. It was not successful.

I doubt it. I think everyone will be going nuts when they announce that MS2.0 is a single rail racer/dueler.

That Meteor looks AWFUL. I'm glad Mack has progressed to their current state of coolness.
